@Oncy Nope, its when the "winger" Danny Murphy skins him for a shot on goal. He's a right winger. He's not a good RB. Its so obvious its maddening.

Still sick that Liverpool are great against great teams and shit against shit teams. Hope is dying.
So are agger and skrtel shit on account of all the times Dembele and Dempsey shifted the ball quickly and got a shot in? No?
If he shows him the line and murphy crosses in and its a goal hes shit for allowing the cross, if he covers the line and Murphy shifts it and fires in a tame shot hes shit for allowing the shot? Even though it was a shite shot and the keeper should have held it? Did you see Reina berate Johnson? Or did he have a go at himself for spilling a shot?
You hear commentators (and managers) say all the time 'they'll be happy to let them shoot from there' etc its in behind you make mistakes as a defender.

I guess we have to have a scapegoat though eh?

I rate Johnson. I think hes a good player.
And it was Reina who cost us that goal. You HAVE to hold that ball.

WIlkins tells you lot its Johnsons fault and you listen.

He's really shit mate. He can't control for fuck all, he's clumsy, he's lazy, he's out of position all the time - when he is in position he doesn't close down quick enough, he can't cross a ball for toffee. He's brutal.

Spot on Oncy.

This thread is scrapegoat-ism at it's best.

People feeling frustrated because, once again, we didn't beat a little team.

I always defend him on here against the ridiculous notion that he's "shit" etc

However, he had a shocker tonight and couldn't complain if he's dropped next weekend for the excellent Kelly.
*hugs Buddha again*

The Johnson defenders are about as good at defending as he is.

Yes Reina shouldn't have spilled the ball, but equally the shot should have never been made. If he was a competent defender he would have stopped Danny Murphy, he's not. ANd if he's not competent, he shouldn't be in the team.

But we've known this for ages so let's just rely on the fact that Capello picks him so he must be good and ignore the fucking blatantly obvious.

Yeah Kelly should be starting.

Before anybody tars me with the brush that "Halmeister thinks Johnson is a boss defender and Bobby Moore reincarnated" let me clarify my stance. I agree he's not the best defender in the world. Kelly is a better defender. It doesn't make Johnson a bad PLAYER. I really think we should look at the possibility of playing him right midfield. He would be decent enough at tracking back (having played right back all his career) and we all know he does his best work going forward.

I think a lot of people are waiting to jump on him now and crucify him. How many times did Enrique get caught in possession when players were out of position for us? How often did he lose possession against Man City? How often did he nearly cost us a goal? How about when he cost us a goal at Chelsea?

People let Enrique off because he's done well so far, but also because people forget his mistakes because they don't result in goals. Johnson's errors seem to always result in goals, but if he did some of the stuff Enrique gets caught doing he'd be vilified further.

He's nowhere near as bad as some make out. Nowhere.

I'd say people are feeling frustrated that once again the weak link in our team is Glen Johnson when we have much better DEFENDER sitting on the bench.

Yep, Kelly is the future. If his earlier fitness troubles are over we should consider selling glenjo. Too expensive for the bench. We already have 35m worth of garbage there.

Andy, I get you defence of glen, I really do. But he's just not good enough.

It's arguable that It's scapegoating by some. but surely blaming ANY player for a defeat is scapegoating.

For me, Johnson could and should have done more. And that's not just a criticism from this week, it's every week. Yes he had some blinders, but that's form. Johnson just hasn't got the class.

Yes pepe fucked up royally tonight , but without him we'd have lost by more, so I don't want to slate the man.

I dont have any problem with Kelly playing by the way, I think he's triffic triffic.

But then I wont be on here ripping him apart if he *SHOCKFACE* allows a shot to come in!!!1

Yeah as Oncy said...

Are Agger and Skrtel shit and did they have shockers tonight for letting so many shots get through to Reina? All of the shots were much more venemous, and in much more dangerous areas than the one Johnson let through.

The shots in question were generally from 10 yards in front of them, so unless you want gaps in your defence then spearing or Adam should have closed them down

I like Johnson. Doesnt really matter who agrees.

As much as I hate to agree with gary neville, reina should be catching that ball. Thus relieving the pressure on us for a bit, meaning murphy would never have been near johnson.

Never mind johnsons defending or pepes' spill.

I'm sorry but people are just deflecting now. The defense was solid through the middle.

For the goal it was pepes fault, but the shot shouldn't have happened

Clumsy - he's often caught on the ball, he often mis-controls the ball
Lazy - he's slow at tracking back, he's slow to close down opposing players
Out of position - just watch him during a match and you'll soon know what i mean

Too many of our players made mistakes tonight that cost us this game... it wasn't just Glen. So I don't get why he receives all the blame.

Off the top of my head:-

Spearing shouldn't have made that kind of tackle...

Adam should have put Bellers through when we were 4 v 3 instead going for glory and ending up being fouled by Senderos.

Carroll should have scored instead hitting the ball straight at their goalie.

Tonight we just weren't good enough as a team to win and that's all there is to it.

They by passed Spearing and Adam, at which point one of the centrebacks should have closed the shot down.

You can't stop every shot going through to your keeper. You can only hope that you stop most of them, and then hope that the rest are off target or shit. A shit one got through and they scored from it.

It was a clanger from Reina. One that's becoming worryingly apparent in his game in the last 2 seasons.

I think the salient points here are:

A) Kelly is a better defender

B) Johnson is better going forward than he is defending

To which we could possibly add:

C) Johnson could potentially be one of our most talented right wingers/midfielders in the squad

I don't understand how we haven't at least experimented with this, and if Kelly is fit why he isn't playing

He should see himself as a RB. He looks great there and that's his best chance of getting in the team.

He wasn't outpaced. He was outfoxed yeah.

Look, I'm not denying that Johnson makes errors and is suspect defensively. I just think some of the comments on here (not yours, babe) are sickening.

If that goal came down the other flank and it was Enrique who suffered this lapse in concentration or whatever you want to call it, would there be such vitriol at him?

No. Mainly, and rightly, because he doesn't make consistent errors (well, he does, just not ones that lead to goals). People would be logging on here and blaming Reina for spilling a pea roller. It's just because it's Glen Johnson for some people.
