I know it was a friendly but he looked like a ten year old in the body of a middle aged man tonight.

I can't help thinking that he should have retired this summer.

There. I said it.

Sounds like he's fishing for offers:

Steven Gerrard admits he may emulate Frank Lampard by ending his career at another club.

The newly-retired England captain has a year left on his contract with the Anfield giants, has yet to agree a further extension, and admits he could be tempted to try a different football experience before he hangs up his boots.

When asked if he could see himself following New York City FC new boy Lampard to the United States, the 34-year-old said: “One day that might happen to me, I don’t know.

"I’ve never really discussed it with anyone or thought about it. Maybe one day I would like the chance to go away from Liverpool for a short time and try something different.

His penalties converted, and occasional pings really papered over the cracks left by the deficiencies in his game.

Think we need to see if he can really play that deep lying role and provide adequate cover, or if it's all too much for him, this season.

I think he'll be in the MLS next season.

I think an important part of Gerrard's game disappeared with his pace. Might be a bit early to judge him, I mean we're still in pre season and obviously the likes of Can and Lucas are fitter than him.

People talk about players losing their pace like it's their virginity. Gerrard's slowed up but he's still pretty quick for his age.

We need him for another year.

We don't have anyone blessed with his passing ability in the team - nor have we been looking for someone to replace him with.

Its his what, 16th pre season with the first team?
He does whats neccessary to get into shape and thats it.
Retiring from England was a great move and he'll benefit from that but it feels like this could be his last year.

Will be a cunt of a day when he retires from Liverpool.

Nah. Gerrard's always been like a comic book, Roy of the Rovers style footballer. There's no way he's letting that slip be the last thing of significance he does in a Liverpool shirt, and rightly so.

It's up to Rodgers to have the balls to drop him if he's not performing.

Fucking shit thread. Fuck me its only pre season and people are writing him off already.

Exactly. Infuriates me at times the lack of respect for a club legend.

It's only pre-season and the poor lad has just been through his worst ever 3 months in his entire life and is still recovering from that heartache. I'd like to see some of you go through that experience and see how y'all bitch bout it.

Give him a break ffs.

Yeah and bring back Carra while you're at it

Sacking Ing-Ur-Lund duty off is a massive thing. He'll get a lot more rest because of that. He'll be fine this season. You don't fuck off one of the best players you've ever had just because he looks a bit leggy in a pre-season friendly.

I don't think anyone said anything about fucking him off. But he might just get the rotation treatment this season.
I mean if Can or whhoever comes in and performs better than Gerrard, does he not take his place in the team?

He pinged a couple of the best passes of the match round last night. Before he fell over at Chelsea he'd just come second to Suarez in the PL player of the year - not because everyone loves him but coz he's top of the Opta stats as the best midfielder in the league, him and Toure being in a league of their own, miles away from everyone else, he'd been ace since Christmas - and second in any position behind Suarez. We'd won every match for ages with him as captain and DM, and got the most points in aeons with him omnipresent.

He got the most assists in the league. From DM. He was also 13th highest goalscorer.

But yeah he's fucked. Again.

The problem is that he's captain. If he wasn't, he and this issue would be fairly easy to manage.
I can see him dictating what games he plays in until he retires, and it will be the majority. And as he's about to sign an extension, we'll be watching him go backwards for some time to come.

He's a great player, but I wouldnt be averse to Rodgers resting him. It's not just about the physical aspect; but the mental aspect as well. Imagine playing 2 must-win games in a week. He would have the weight of the world on his shoulders. Keep him fresh by playing him less.

Too right. He's getting too much grief when he was one of our best players last season. If Lovern is as commanding as he's meant to be behind him and Mignolet grows a pair in organising the defence and comes for a high ball every now and again the defensive side of Gerrards game is automatically under less scrutiny. He's more than capable of spraying successful hollywood balls around the place and his passing is great for our current system. People shouldn't be writing Steven Gerrard off so early, he's pulled this club through thick and thin, he's more than capable of doing it with himself.

There's no problem. He's old and getting older but he did well last season so let's see how he does this one. We've got other options in there now and a brilliant young midfielder in Rossiter coming through in the next couple of years.

It's all good.

Gerrard shouldntbe a regular starter...we should get creative with how and where we use his experience. He can still offer a lot...

You don't throw away a player as good as Gerrard, you do all you can to get the most from him for the longest time. Take Dalglish - he was given about half of every week off in his last two seasons to make sure he stayed fresh for games. Gerrard needs a few rests during the season but he's still a crucial player for the team.

Theres a bit in the film the Hustler where Fast Eddie has Minnesota Fats on the ropes, hes up 20 grand in the game. They take a break and Minnesota Fats goes in the back room, shaves, washes, cleans his hands and changes his shirt.
Fast Eddie sits in a chair looking all fucking drunk and disheveled. Fats walks back in and Eddie jokes about how he looks like a beautiful baby all clean and powdered. Eddie looks down at his stained shirt, scratches his stubbled face and they commence playing.

Fats wipes the floor with Eddie and leaves him drunk lying face down on the floor and pennilless.

What im saying is Gerrard needs to fucking have a wash and a shave.

Why shouldnt he be a regular starter? What has he done to say he hasnt earnt it? One of our best players last season.

Every year like clockwork the same pathetic thread and every year he proves you lot wrong. yeah he will need to rest from time to time. But baring injuries he'll still play at least 40 games in all competitions.

This. He has his flaws brought on by the onset of age, but he still brings much more to the team than he takes away from. Just look at the highlights clip of the City game, at around the 1:55 mark. An example of the right-on-the-penny cross-field pass we've seen over the years and taken for granted.

He assisted on 15 goals last season, 10 the season before - and that's after coming back from a couple of injury-disrupted seasons which had me thinking would relegate him to a bench role and earlier retirement. And when the game's on the line and you need a man big enough to step up and take the penalty, he never shrinks away from it, and more often than not, nails it. If we need to turn from defence to attack in a hurry and there's a long raking pass from the back to set off a quick counter attack, I know who I want making that pass. He's still got something to offer and he isn't a Pellegrino.

Perhaps Lovren reputedly being a strong character and leader at the back will be able to organize the collective team defences and push the line further up, and Gerrard's defensive deficiencies will become less of an issue.

Give him time. He's probably going through a rough patch.
