Gotta say, jury is out on him in that DM area.

Heard a few people mentioning him being our midfield anchor but for me its pretty obvious he doesn't have the discipline to play there.

Will be interesting to see how he does, I think he does have ability and has a great engine on him, but he has the Lovren 'I think i'm better than I actually am' thing going on.

I can see him in the CM area but then you have to sacrifice either one of henderson or milner to accommodate him.

Basically Rodgers needs to sign a DM this window or we will get overrun in that area across the course of this season. Illaramendi has been mentioned, and to be dead honest i don't know a great deal about him but he does appear to fit the profile of the type of player we do need.

Really hope Rodgers is not stubborn on this and acts before the end of the window.

I've seen people saying he was shit today... but I thought he was alright. I was quite surprised at how he stayed in that spot just ahead of the defence and how well he seemed to read what was going on... Did I get it all wrong again?

We could do without a DM if we continue to play 4-2-3-1 with Milner and Henderson. Except our attacking play will be ugly, and we'll struggle to break down teams.

The lack of clarity around the formation we're going to play is perplexing. If we want to play 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2 diamond, a DM is critical. And yeah, Can isn't really cut out for that role.

He has 'presence'.

I think that often clouds people judgement on how good the player really is.

I remember a mate of mine hardcore Southampton fan and he always maintained Fonte did all the hard work and lovren would often do the 'clearing up' and people would then see Lovren as the guy who did it all.

He did 'ok' but if you compare that area to the top 4 its patently obvious we are lacking hugely in dictating the play from such deep areas.

United - Schneiderlin Chelsea - Matic Arsenal - Coquelin City - Toure/Fernandinho/Delph

Like i said, i'm not knocking Can on this, I'm just saying he is not our answer for that area, and Rodgers needs to identify this and get it sorted ASAP.

People forget that he's still a kid though. 21 years old.
He's got all the tools to play in that position and I thought he did well there last night.
The lack of discipline and jumping into tackles could be easily coached out.

He's a gem but we need to decide where we want to play him and then let him develop in that role.
Both him and Rodgers have said that his best position is as the controlling midfielder..

When he followed one of their dudes into the box I was expecting a lucas style clip to the heels and a pen, but he didn't. For that kind of thing, the fact that he stayed where he was meant to, the fact that he can actually play football as well, means he's an improvement on Lucas.

He should be playing the kind of role Milner and Henderson should be playing.

He's firmly behind them in the pecking order though, so he won't. Obviously the manager has had no influence whatsoever on this situation.

I thought he was shit last night but he can make things happen. Agree with @peterhague his role should be further forward where he has more opportunity to create.

You seem to forget that Henderson was once behind other players and the manager was fair with him and rewarded his form. Can played one friendly in the Summer, he's clearly behind others in fitness terms. Don't let that stop you making lazy observations though, if it means you can have another dig.

If henderson is injured for the Arsenal game then I'd be concerned about the gaps Can would leave in our midfield if he played in Hendersons position.
We are going to have to play better than our first two games to get a result regardless.

He never will be a dm, his strength is the box to box play.

He will replace hendo against arsenal.

Tbf it doesn't take a lot of hard thinking to see that a young MF is going to find it tough to get past either the club captain or a player given guarantees of playing.

I agree he will find it tough but should Can be picked ahead of Milner and Henderson right now? I'm a big fan of Can but i'd be playing the other two before him most weeks. Can is definitely in our plans as he was brought on in our first two games, after the hour mark against Stoke and then to replace the injured Henderson against Bournemouth. Don't forget Can arrived late into our preseason training due to his u-21 commitments with Germany. Can will get plenty of game time this season.

Can getting games isn't an issue, it's more a matter of where and with what kind of consistency.

I'm more concerned about the likes of Origi.

It's more a question of whether Can should've been one of our top priorities for replacement in our summer recruitment drive.

Interesting stat:

- No player in the premier league has laid more tackles than Emre Can in 2015.

I don't even know what that means. I do know that, one pass aside, he was awful against Bournemouth. Hopefully it was a blip but I think if he starts against Arsenal he'll be an exploitable link.

Our leading tackler (attempts) so far this season is ....

Adam Lallana - 15 attempts, 7 successful
James Milner - 9 attempts, 7 successful
Nathaniel Clyne - 8 attempts, 7 successful
Emre Can - 8 attempts, 5 successful
