Nothing fancy about this post.
Just posting to say, he's Liverpool's Number 9, so lets all get behind the big fella ay?

We played one good game where caroll starts, it's more about how we set up when he plays rather than him though, so I guess it falls down to kenny in that respect

Andy Carroll warned to get in shape by Fabio Capello
Matt Hughes Deputy Football Correspondent
1 minute ago
Fabio Capello told Andy Carroll yesterday that he must improve his fitness levels if he is to challenge for a regular place with England.

The Liverpool striker was not even on the substitutes’ bench for Friday’s 3-0 win over Bulgaria and is unlikely to be considered when Capello picks his team for tomorrow’s European Championship qualifier against Wales.

Capello was unimpressed by Carroll’s physical condition and general fitness during training last week and is understood to have concerns about the player’s lifestyle. The Italian warned Carroll that he must curb his drinking habits before handing him his first cap in a friendly defeat by France in November last year, but fears that the message may not have got through.

Carroll scored on his most recent and only second England appearance, in the 1-1 draw against Ghana in March, but has shown few signs of international class since completing a British-record £35 million move to Liverpool in January. The 22-year-old has not scored in the Barclays Premier League this season and was dropped to the bench by Kenny Dalglish for Liverpool’s last match, a 3-1 win over Bolton Wanderers.

Capello has also expressed frustration to his staff at Carroll’s apparent failure to work on improving his condition during the summer after being excused duty with the Under-21s on fitness grounds. Instead he went on a series of high-profile holidays and was photographed in Ibiza, Barbados and at the Glastonbury festival.

“Andy needs to find good form,” Capello said. “I chose 25 players and decided that the first XI would be the players who were, for me, in the best form.

“Andy didn’t play the last game with Liverpool and probably he is not at the top. Also he is big. He needs to play games, games, games. It’s the start of the season.

“At this time some players are really good and run a lot. When other players, like Andy, will be fit and at the top of their form, they will be important.”

I see a bit of a debate going on about Carroll's goalscoring return, but i'm honestly not taking that into consideration when discussing his performances.

Any striker can go through lean spells in terms of not scoring, that's perfectly normal. My main gripe and concern with Carroll is his overall game and i just think he's well off the pace: heavy first touch, little movement, fuck all drive or fight in him...the total opposite to when he was at Newcastle.

This "he's still getting fit" line is starting to wear thin, i'm sorry but no Footballer should take that long to get fit. It's just a lame excuse and it's time for the big man to step up the plate...show how much he wants it as opposed to whinging at the Ref/his team-mates and letting the most average of defenders get the better of him.

I don't mind players who are limited in talent but work their socks off e.g. Lucas...but lazy players get on my nerves especially those who have had everything laid out for them to succeed.

I think Kenny has pampered and protected him too much, and should allow the pressure of justifying the 35Mil price tag weigh on Carroll's shoulders. He's had it too easy, the big lad and needs a good kick up the arse.

I don't get this with Carroll. He has a chance of a lifetime. It's right there served on a fucking plate.
He's playing for LIVER-FUCKING-POOL.
Why the fuck does it seem like he's not arsed?

Some effort please, you Geordie nob.

I'm probably one of the few here who want him to be part of our starting XI and I don't believe the whole fitness debate.
He's fit, but like I've said before he needs to get his head straight.
Fuck me, if Kenny of all people can't do it, who can? (He was on Boyzone concert with you FFS!)

That article's a load of shite & is feeding the media agenda, & the agenda of plenty on here it seems.

Fuck capello, he doesn't pay Carroll's wages, we do, & kenny told him he could go off & enjoy himself before reporting to training early.

It's our job to get him fit, it's our job to decide when he's fit, so do one.

Not worried at all... It's just a shame his perfectly legit goal was scrubbed off against Sunderland ... Far too much mewling and pukin going on.

He was way off fitness last season so by my reckoning he has only played 3 games for the club... It'll take time... Thats not to take the pressure off, in want the lanky cunt to earn every one of them 35M we paid for him, I just dont think it's right to get on his back yet.... Even if the press cant wait to do so.

The actual quotes from Capello aren't so bad and to be fair he can't help what he is asked about.

On the whole though i don't much care what Carroll does for England. I don't really care what any Liverpool player does for their country as long as they don't come back injured.

I'm firmly with those who say that as long as we are winning then every player is doing their job, regardless of who is scoring. When we're not winning or scoring goals that is the time to criticise the forwards.

I would say though, like I said at the time, all those holidays and drunken photos over the summer were unwise. It was bound to be raised again if Carroll didn't have a great start. That's why they were taken. If the only photos of him that had been taken over the summer were of him training then i imagine the press would be much more sympathetic now.

To lead the line or miss the bus? Time for Carroll to decide

Andy Carroll has to decide what kind of footballer he wishes to be.

Is it his aim to become England's starting No 9, while leading the line at the most rapidly improving club in the Premier League; or his destiny to sit on the sidelines derided as a waste of money, before his telephone lights up in May for Fabio Capello to deliver football's equivalent of the Dear John letter, terse and final, with no way back.

There is a massive opportunity for Carroll and he is blowing it. Right now, both of his teams - the one that paid £35million for him and the one that considered him the answer to their prayers little more than five months ago - do better without him.

Kenny Dalglish, the Liverpool manager, has been staunch in his defence of the striker so far, but team selection speaks louder than words and Carroll did not start Liverpool's last two matches before the international break.

Capello did not even have him on the bench for the game in Bulgaria, a decision that places Carroll behind Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe, Darren Bent, Ashley Young and perhaps even Theo Walcott. Carroll is now England's fourth choice, at best.

Last March, scoring against Ghana in a lively display, he was considered the future. Capello has been searching for a striker like Carroll since starting the job in 2008.

Over lunch in the weeks before his first game, he spelled out England's need for a battering ram spearhead in the style of Italy's Luca Toni. If all else failed, he hoped Rooney might fit the bill.

It was clear from there that Michael Owen's days were numbered. The manager never found England's Toni and settled instead for Emile Heskey, who satisfied the physical demands of the role but posed little threat as a goalscorer.

Then along came Carroll. Hallelujah, praise the Lord and pass the Communion wine. On second thoughts, better keep that corked for now.
Capello has gone public before on his fear that Carroll does not live a life conducive to the highest level of performance and nothing he has seen this season has convinced him of any change since the £35m transfer to Liverpool. He is not alone.

Rumblings of disquiet over Carroll's refuelling preferences have emanated from Liverpool for some time. Carroll has had a persistent knee problem but that is not the only reason his form and fitness are felt to be failing, and concern stretches all the way from the medical wing to the dressing room.

For public consumption, Capello plays the diplomat. 'Andy needs to find good form,' he said in Sofia.
'I choose 25 players and the first XI are the players that, for me, are in the best moment. Andy didn't play the last game for Liverpool, and probably he is not at the top. He needs to play, though.

'Right now, some players are really fresh, really good, they run a lot and the last 20 minutes we had everything because of this, ball possession, chances to score, we were winning and we were at our best. When a player like Andy is fit and at the top of form he will be important and with the number of games being played, he should be fit in a very short time. I hope so.'

Privately, however, he is worried. Having decided that Carroll and Rooney were the way forward, Capello is now highlighting the inventive interchanges between Rooney, Young, Walcott and Stewart Downing. Where would a heavy, cumbersome target man fit into that? The simple answer is that he wouldn't.

Rooney talked of leaving his fitness programme at home and just enjoying a break this summer, but he has been on football's treadmill for almost a decade now, without respite. He needed to result, return to the centre that night as the local hero. Nobody cared if he liked a beer; in fact, they loved that he did. Liverpool are different; Liverpool with a £35m price tag even more so.

With that comes responsibility; with ambition comes the need for intense focus. It is not Dalglish's way to expose his players to criticism, but he is no fool.

More than anyone, he will be able to separate myth from reality on Merseyside. Ultimately, the decision rests with the player. Against Arsenal, Liverpool were the superior team, but victory only seemed assured once Luis Suarez replaced Carroll late on.

At home to Bolton, the job was also done without him, his delayed entry an irrelevance. England then won 3-0 in Bulgaria and may have unearthed a new plan A.
This bus will leave whether Carroll is on board or not; and Dalglish and Capello are running no jolly boys' outing.

I'm convinced he needs a year in the gym. Or a summer at the least.

He's huge but seems to get bundled out off the ball quite easily. He needs a bit more strength through the hips. Stand your ground and fucking monster people out of the way, that gives you a yard of space just as easily as a bit of extra pace. Look at the way Shearer used to use his body, or Drogba these days. Vieri used to be fucking immense at it in Serie A.

He's physically imposing to look at, but not to play against.

Andy has no choice but to up his game and fitness or he'll be enjoying a spell on the bench. That and the increased competition for a starting berth will drive the lad on. Every footballer has a desire to be in the starting XI (bar some that we've had who were happy to just collect a pay check on the sidelines) and strikers want to score goals.

I think there is a lot of shite being spouted about Carroll and his fitness to be honest, Capello is right, he just needs to play games and be left alone.
There is also not that much wrong with his overall game

regards

i don't really care what capello thinks of him as a player (he rates him highly, by all accounts, anyway), but it must be a bit of a concern if he thinks he's not fit enough, surely?

it's a disniterested opinion.

It really is. Thinking otherwise is just burying your head in the sand. We did very little research into Carroll before we signed him.

If we can straighten him out then he'll have every chance of succeeding, but he's going to have to put in some monster performances to dislodge Kuyt and Suarez up front.

In my book, he would only have to turn up sober to displace Kuyt! ;D

fixing talented players who have problems is what moneyball is all about. that said I was watching carroll videos at the weekend and he doesn't look that much faster or sharper to me, from what I could observe from limited youtube videos is everything went through carroll so obviously he is going to look more effective.

LOL. there's no hidden value there to unlock!!! we paid £35m for him FFS!

believe it or not, i really want to give the guy every chance, but this kind of thing's just ludicrous.

We bought him for 35M and sold Torres for 50M when it should have been more like 15M and 30M.
Its still 15M profit. Good enough for me.
Carroll will come good but never a great 20+ goals a season striker, let alone a legend

Yeah, but we could have sold Torres for 50m and bought Carroll for 15-20m this summer, so it could have been 30m profit.

you're speculating, carroll was well on his way (to scoring 20 goals) seeing as he had scored 11 goals by the time we bought him in jan.
