So you don't expect goals from a £35 million pound striker, Neil?
If we win games when he plays I personally don't give a flying fuck whether he's scoring or not.

The price we paid for him is just that, & there's no changing it, if Carroll helps us get three points in a game I don't care about his goal tally particularly.

suarez - creativity
carroll - target man
kuyt - versatility
ballemy - pace

a fantastic pool of abilities to break down team both home and away. we've paid a premium for the target man option but we do have that option. it's worth noting carroll is only 22 years, very young where he can gain experience and improve.

I find that stance perplexing tbh FFF.

Why? If we win, it doesnt matter who scores does it Stu? The most important thing is 3 points in every game.

I was away on my jollies for the Arse game and I watched it with Croatian commentary - I thought he played great.

Later I was looking up match reports and pretty much everyone said he was awful. Was the sky commentator having a go at him? He won a perfectly good header and set up Downing's goal - no mention of that, just that Vermaelen had him in his pocket all game. I thought he gave Vermaelen a mad time and with a more lenient ref he'd have had an assist early on and Arsenal bricking it.

I'm not worried about him at all. He's lost loads of beef in the summer and he is really quick. As for the price - fuck the price, that's history. He's a part of a squad and that's all there is to it.

Good post. My feelings exactly, a lot of what he does during games goes unmentioned.
I read a comment from a lad who was at the Emirates, and it was a pretty different opinion to those who saw the game on tv.

Yeah, I watched the game again the following day & watched just how much work the defenders did around Carroll instead of focusing just on his touch etc, & he had them run ragged.

Why? If Carroll is in the side, & we're winning matches, why should it actually matter if he's the one banging the goals in or not?

Its not that surprising, Jon. It doesnt matter if we win without him scoring, but thats only if his perfomance aids in victory as oppoesed to hindering it.

I like the big galoot though, and hope he does well here

When we played Citeh last year I was a few rows back level with the pen spot, anny road end of the lower centenary. When he scored his first it sounded like he'd burst the thing. It's up there with the hardest shots I've ever seen. Then when Ming floated the ball in from the left, initial thoughts were 'Nah, he's got no chance' followed by 'fuck me that was amazing when he not only won the header but stuck it right in the corner'. I had a guy from Southampton with me who said he hadn't seen as good a striking performance since Shearer. He's got what it takes, no doubt.

If we're winning every week with him in the side it's fair to say that's not hindering it. Or we've got the best ten man team in history.

I'll be delighted if he scores 15 league goals. Thats one every 2.5 games average. Amazes me how people are ready to write him off so earlt, and because of a pricetag that he had nothing to do with, and one I would suggest had a very large bearing on the price we got for Torres.

That's some accolade from a neutral. I think his biggest obstacle is himself, if he behaves and looks after himself he'll be sound. When we played Newcastle last year I thought he was unplayable, it's rare you see a player THAT good.

he was awesome that day, he needs to concentrate on getting back to that level for us and we need to concetrate on giving him proper service and not leaving him isolated for long periods.

Exactly. 3 games into a season we've started really well and the knives are already being sharpened for our young front man. Ridiculous.

And Portly made an excellent point. Kuyt's touch is often woeful (given he's in a "dip" for about 70% of the season) and yet any criticism of him is usually shouted down.
This post will do - lots of lads sticking up for Carroll, and why not, it's true we're only a few games into the season (but NOT 3 games into Carroll's career at Liverpool so it makes absolutely zero sense for many of you to talk about only 3 games into the season ) but the pattern is the same as last season, when Carroll is on the pitch the ball gets lumped up to him all the time (and YES I agree not his fault but there you are, it still happens, the temptation is too much for some players as it's an easy option when nothing else is on or they are under pressure).

However as I have mentioned numerous times on here, our moves often break down when Carroll is involved, either from his poor first touch, control or his passing, the difference to when he isn't on the pitch is blindingly obvious, and has been mentioned many times by many posters.

It isn't about his goal tally - I've no doubt that he will score goals (enough or not I have no idea) - but about how the team perform as a whole with him involved. Hopefully KD and the team can a) stop people lumping it in to him at every opportunity (though to be honest KD doesn't seem to have done much to alleviate that tendency yet) b) improve his control, passing & first touch and move them onto a much higher level and c) he can hit the net at as good as, or better, a rate than he did at Newcastle.

Fingers crossed, but not too hopeful from the evidence provided so far.

Nothing fancy about this post.
Just posting to say, he's Liverpool's Number 9, so lets all get behind the big fella ay?

People are lowering their expectations all too easily over Andy Carroll. We've spent £35M on him and I'm going to judge him accordingly.

Yeah, and as Coates was only 4m I'm going to assume he's a load of shit.
hahahaha.

Bellamy was free, so we should probably burn him before he scores an own goal every game.

A £35M striker should be brilliant, or at least have the potential to be so.

I'm not convinced that's true of Andy Carroll. The criticisms should be directed at the club though, and not Carroll, but I hope they'll be no need to do so.

what other player in the world would sell for 35 mill yet only get 80 grand a week wages (or whatever he's on). that's pretty much the conclusive evidence for how absurd his fee is. i was made up but i really wish we'd got someone else. he could well end up being an awful burden imo.

I think he does have the potential to be brilliant or at the very least unplayable. He's certainly the best header or the ball I've seen in a ling time. He needs to work on his touch (which will improve with confidence) and he needs to make sure when we play the ball up field it sticks. I have no worries about Carroll whatsoever just like I had no worried about Henderson.

Exactly that, we should be getting behind all Liverpool players including Lucas and Kuyt. However nobody should be beyond criticism rightly levelled at them for poor performances. Talent is only half the equation, humility, dedication, application and hardwork are the other.

Players need to realise that playing for Liverpool is an honour and priviledge. If they need any reminders, look at the legend that is Kenny and take a walk through the trophy room to see what legends went before them.

I think I'm going to leave Carroll threads alone for a while.
I wish I could see all this ability and potential you guys see but I can't.
Obviously I would love to be wrong here and you guys be right, love it as we'd be better off no end.

He's a Liverpool player and will have my support but that money could have been spent far better.
