Coutinho, Can, Milner, Henderson, Firmino… Jamie Carragher on Brendan Rodgers’ upcoming problem

Jamie Carragher has reiterated his thoughts that Liverpool should have signed a defensive midfielder in the summer, expressing doubts over whether Emre Can is suited to the role yet.

“I don’t think Emre Can is ideally suited yet to the holding midfield role,” he told the Liverpool Way podcast this week.
“Watching him over the summer for Germany under-21s he’s someone who likes to go forward, powering through midfield.
“If Liverpool play the same way they did at Stoke then you wonder where he fits in.”

Carragher told how there is a “feeling within the club that he’s a classy player with a big future.”
But right now, the 37-year-old says it was a surprise Brendan Rodgersdidn’t sign a defensive midfielder.

“I look at Henderson and Milner as a midfield two and they’ve got great energy and I like both players. They’ll both get goals, but neither is that defensive minded and I think that might cause a problem in the coming weeks.
“And if he wants to go to a holding midfielder then where does Coutinho fit in? Where does Firmino fit in? I think it’s going to be really interesting how Brendan Rodgers sets his side up over the coming months.”
It’s here where Carragher expressed concerns over Philippe Coutinhobeing pushed into a wider role in the front three.

“I think Liverpool have a slight problem in the coming weeks and months.
“If you play a holding midfielder behind Milner and Henderson, then that’s your midfield three and unless you play a diamond formation then Coutinho is going to end up in a wide role in a 4-3-3.”
On Coutinho, he said: “He doesn’t feel comfortable there [out wide] and I just feel he has to play in a central role. So he almost has to be one of those three, and if he is then that means either Henderson or Milner isn’t if you play with that holding midfield player.”
Carragher also discussed Rodgers’ selection of Dejan Lovren ahead ofMamadou Sakho, saying that “I don’t think either of them have covered themselves in glory since they’ve come here and I’m looking for a lot more this season from both players.”

It's almost as if we just signed random players without much thought for how we're going to form a cohesive team.
Said as much to my mate the other night.

Only I phrased it 'Looks like Rodgers is just throwing enough shit at the wall in the hope that some sticks'.

Ryan was the one saying we didn't need an out and out dm, but has since back peddled. He thought the 'rolls royce' would be a much better option.

Is 'Ryan' a synonym for 'every fucking Liverpool fan with half a clue'?

This issue, like every other issue is indeed blatantly obvious. But only because I pointed it out for the majority of you.

cf; best 11's, pace being laregely irrelevent, defensive mids at home, positionless forwards, winders being dead, box to box midfielders, four lines of players, high defensive lines, etc etc.

You all talk about them now like they're commonplace. Don't forget I fucking painstakingly explained all of them to you in the first place.

Hahaha. SCM, the place were nobody knew anything about football before joining.

*I thought a best 11 were the top eleven songs you listned to, Bob 34 Chester

*High defensive lines? Surley thats whats Rooneys hair is all about? Ivan 29 Kiev

*Positionless forwards are on the bench I think, Roger 45 Glasgow

*I send direct messages or dm's all the time, Sven 25 Gothenburg

Thank God we joined SCM.

Well, I've certainly learned something from this post, Ryan.

Thankyou, oh wise one. Can you teach us to suck eggs while you're at it?

The potential loss of millions in earnings by Ryan not taking up management from all knowledge he acquired in semi-pro leagues is staggering.
Wouldnt mind seeing a catfight between him and Wenger though.

What about Lucas? poor fella, Carra didnt even mention him
Does Ryan think his brazilian favorite has a future with us and could be the solution for this position?

Carra did an interesting interview where he talked about our need for a DM (not that DM's exist anymore). He mentioned players like Hamann and Mascherano.

Well he's obviously no longer in Rodgers' plans and they told him he could find another club.
I personally think we were solid at Stoke and can build on that performance.
Id play the same team on monday

Pace being largely irrelevant is rubbish.

Context Dreamy, context.

It's largely irrelevent because there are very few undeniably slow players these days, and because the days of pacey 'average' players don't really cut it in the Premier League like they used to. Which is what I pointed out at the time.

So, don't fret sweetheart.

So pace is relevant, actually very relevant 🙂

By the way you never explained to me how we should set up to get the most out of Coutinho?
