Liverpool's business lacks balance..

Brendan Rodgers has been slammed by Trevor Francis for lacking balance in his Liverpool transfer business this summer.
The Anfield boss was given excessive funds to strengthen the squad following the £75 million sale of Luis Suarez and has since bought no less than six players with more set to follow. The total paid is approaching the £100 million mark with Alberto Moreno set to take it over the threshold.
Lacking balance
According to former England international Trevor Francis, Rodgers still has not done enough to ensure the loss of Suarez will be compensated. He says that more money will have to be spent between now and the transfer deadline if Liverpool are to mount a title challenge.
He told Sky Sports: "There’s £100million spent and only £4million put aside for a striker, that being Rickie Lambert.
“If they get the left-back Alberto Moreno then I think that’s going to cost close to £20million and that will take the spending up to £110million and £10million of that was spent on Divock Origi who has gone back on loan to Lille.

“So forget the young Belgian player for the moment, there’s £100million spent and only £4million put aside for a striker, that being Rickie Lambert."
“I just think that somewhere along the line the balance is not right. He needed a £30 million striker. Don’t ask me who because that’s not my job – that’s why he is in the job and why he has got scouts all over the world looking to try to bring somebody in.
'Back to bite him'
“Ultimately it might come back to bite him. Whatever he’s going to do, he has got to be positive and I believe he’s got to do it before the transfer window closes at the end of August."
Francis has aired concerns that seem to be drifting through the halls of Anfield at the moment: how are they going to replace Suarez?
It seems Rodgers is ready to award Daniel Sturridge a starring role after his impressive goal-scoring season last term. But without the creation and penetration of Suarez, many fear they will struggle to mount a significant Premier League title challenge.
Lambert set to struggle
More worryingly, the only striker Rodgers has added to the squad has not convinced Francis at all. According to Francis, Lambert is looking uncomfortable in the shirt of his boyhood club and doesn't believe the 32-year-old can handle the pressure that comes with playing for a top club.
He continued: “I’ve watched him in three or four games and in one game he was taken off at half-time and today he struggled throughout. He didn’t look comfortable playing in those surroundings.
“He is desperate for a goal. Steven Gerrard scored the goal from the penalty spot and I wish that had been Lambert because he needs a goal. The quicker he gets it, the better for him.
“He’s got an important role to play there.”
Francis has theorised that Rodgers himself will be disappointed with the performances of the former-Southampton man in pre-season friendlies, but also believes the Ulsterman will attempt to cover up the cracks.
“He would have expected more from Lambert,” said Francis.
“He will try and gloss over it in the best way possible because he wants to keep his confidence high, but this is a player who at the moment is struggling.

Fascinating insight there, Trev. What would we do without your sagely input.

He may have have a dodgy management career and there is an element of hyperbole in his "attack" but I think he does raise some valid questions. Where is that striker/attacker?

Yeah, it's put across in a sensationalist manner but everyone is asking the same question - where is the replacement for Suarez?

2 things to note, firstly Trevor Francis is a twat who pretty much hates LFC and secondly he is right we should have signed a big name striker.

I see Reus is getting mentioned again in the press and with the Cavani and Falcao links and our attempts at signing Sanchez maybe we are looking for that little bit of stardust....

Fingers crossed we can do it.

Yeah, it's put across in a sensationalist manner but everyone is asking the same question - where is the replacement for Suarez?

Well, IMHO that question is itself sensationalist. Even if it were possible, which I doubt, we're not going to directly replace Suarez, because that would have taken every penny of his fee and there are other things we've also needed to do with the money we've got. Brendan's stated in so many words that we still want another top striker, so I'm sure they're working on it and I'd rather they take the time they need to get the right one.

secondly he is right we should have signed a big name striker.

Well, no, he isn't right, at least not yet. He's supposed to be an ex-manager who knows how transfers work, so he should know that you don't always get your targets in order of priority - some deals drag on, especially if they ARE for £30m star strikers, and the quickest and easiest ones tend to be for the older or younger talents, so how the hell does he know that Rodgers isn't going to get a big striker before the window closes? At best the criticism is premature.

It is too early to say if Rogers has made a mistake as the window hasn't closed yet. And I fully expect you to sign a striker.

However, if you had £60m to spend before Suarez that gave you £135m to spend. That leaves just £25m to spend on the replacement striker. A split of £110m/£25m doesn't seem the most optimum given the importance of Suarez to the team. With fee inflation so high a £25m player isn't going to be from the top bracket unless Rogers uncovers another gem.

Is no one gonna comment on his crap, premature assertion that Lambert is struggling? The point about him only playing one half of a friendly is laughable.

There's a few departure to add to that though.

Well isn't he? I'm not talking about his previous season at Southampton, I'm looking at the present.
Do you think he performed well? Did he give you any confidence regarding our strikers with Sturridge and Borini out?

Yes, you could say that it's still pre season but how many games are there left, the shit starts next weekend!

Fuck me, Suso a makeshift winger managed to score 2 goals in pre season, Lambert has looked slow, out of shape and lost.

Before you start, no it's not because he's English, I actually don't mind that we signed him because he was never gonna be our first choice. Also we didn't pay that much for him, but come on...

You should have stopped after yes its pre season.

Aspas was our top scorer in pre season last summer, it means fuck all.

Where does it say in the article that Rodgers has wasted the Suarez money? typical tabloid shite!

Francis maybe a nob, a nob that has scored the winner in a European Cup final but there isn't much wrong with what he says there, it is a head scratcher, obviously we can't replace Suarez but bar the convenient opportunity of Sanchez popping up we haven't done anything to fill the the hole left by him at the top of the pitch, i don't get it as surely we would have had a plan of sorts for Suarez leaving, even if we were not intending to sell him.

It leaves about 35 mill without sales. Spent 85 so far and Moreno will be 14-16 mill.
Add hopefully 5 for Assaidi, 12 for Borini and 2 for Reina. And we've got money to get a top quality striker.
But its imho about the right player so the fee is largely irrelevant.

8-10 for Agger
8 for Lucas
3 for Johnson

How do you know "we haven't done anything" though? I seriously doubt that's true anyway but, even if it were, there'd be no way any of us could know. Most of the work surrounding transfers, even big ones, isn't done in the media, not at a properly run club anyway.

Because we still have a gaping hole up front, we would have had an attacker or 2 by now, we have had months to sort the situation, if Suarez was always going then we had up to a year to identify players to fill the hole he left, why is it taking so long to sort out? why would we choose to leave it so late?

You gotta admit someone always leaks it if we had gone or are going for a big player, if we had gone for someone big this summer and failed we would have heard about it, usually its the small Assiadi/Lambert type signings that catch everyone unaware.

We're fifth favourites with all the bookies and they really think about this shit.

I'm not saying they're right, but the lack of striking options is scaring the shit out of me. If we start the season with no additional signings when everyone can see how fragile we are up front it's gonna look Wengeresque.

Spaghetti: we *have* signed an attacker (Lambert). He's not enough on his own but the idea that we've "done nothing" is just wrong. We did bid for someone big this summer (Sanchez, as you yourself said in an earlier post) and none of us, not a single one, knows what other plans we've got. Like you, I'd have preferred us to have got it sorted by now. Unlike you, though, I'm not panicking simply because there's nothing in the media about it.

In February 1992, Francis brought former French International Eric Cantona back from the wilderness by inviting him for a trial at Sheffield Wednesday. However as the snowy conditions meant that he could only evaluate Cantona on astroturf, Francis requested an extension to the trial to see whether Cantona could play on grass. [2]
An outraged Cantona walked out on The Owls and was signed (without a trial) by Leeds United, famously inspiring first them and then Manchester United to success.
