I don't like the convention that if you're a young CB you absolutely must serve an apprenticeship at RB or LB. Yes it teaches you things but not every single CB is suited to playing out on the flanks, especially these days when those positions demand exceptional speed and stamina.
In ancient days, for example, Lawrenson could have played out wide at any stage in his career (and of course sometimes did), as could Smith, Hughes and Nicol, but Thompson was never suited to it, nor was Hansen. More recently, could you have ever pictured Sami bombing up the wings in his younger days? Carra did but he didn't start out at CB, and, although memories play tricks on some, he had loads of critics during that period, and no really great band of supporters urging him to stay in the side in the middle.
Sometimes - and only sometimes - if you see a talented young central defender, play him in the damned centre and see if he'll flourish. I repeat I'm not advocating scrapping the usual approach, I just think you need to be a bit more flexible.
As soon as Wisdom was getting plaudits from England and LFC coaches for his dominant and assured performances in the middle, he was bunged out wide on the right. The result is that he now looks miles away from being a decent RB, and he's ceased to look at all special at CB. Of course, the lazy argument will be, 'Well, that shows he's never been any good,' but that's knowingly misleading. He did once look very promising indeed, and it's a shame what's happened.
