The Italian stallion

do the wags always accompany them like a spare part?

i watched that wanting/expecting the big payoff of the first klopp meet and hug, chiesa has the type of attitude i think the big man would’ve loved.

Seems like this guy is going to be awesome for us. I was skeptical about signing him, but he definitely fits.

Depends on how his fitness holds up IMO. If we and he can get that right between us, signing a player of his ability for 15 mill.will be a real coup.

Regarding the pointy-elbowed wife of his, for someone not that hot, it's remarkable that the red cafe massive wiped off their frothy spittle, interrupted their regular programming, and commented how hot she was. Then again, it's a stadium full of fat mancs, and in a way the forum simply wanted to posture homoerotically in demonstrations of faded virility. Maybe that was it.

She's definitely not just hot.

yeah shes a right dog :-/

If this guy stays fit (and you'd hope the medical was a real bitch so, given that he passed it, the signs are good) he could blow my No More Italians mantra right out of the water - and nobody on here will be more chuffed than I will if that happens. 😎

As long as we don't have to look at that pig of a wife who is vacantly checking her cell phone, presumably sending one more fruitless dm to Athens.
I couldn't answer her yesterday as we were out for our anniversary. 15 years. 15 loooong years.

Anyway, I didn't say I wouldn't, I said she wasn't that hot.

Wow!

Next step - a Maltese player?

We've had a half-Maltese one before now and his identity may surprise you. Step forward Carra, whose Scouser mum was born to Maltese parents.

It amuses me when we see random clips like that - same when youngsters get a go in first team and show they can string a few passes together - and we're all gassed over little more than the fact that they can actually play football. So it wasn't a myth!

Ali Dia and Naby Keita have traumatised a generation or 2

Spalletti muses over where to fit Chiesa into new Italy 3-5-2

Luciano Spalletti explains how Federico Chiesa could fit into this new-look Italy side after his transfer to Liverpool, as the Azzurri are dominating their Nations League group.

The Azzurri came back from an early goal to beat France 3-1 in Paris on Friday, then this evening emerged with a 2-1 victory against Israel.

Davide Frattesi consolidated his status as Spalletti’s top scorer by finding the net again in Budapest, followed by a Moise Kean strike.

“The team proved itself very mature, despite generally being of a young age,” said the coach in his press conference.

“There was difficulty running into the traffic of the Israeli midfield, it was far more dense and blocked up than against France. We had to keep the balance and ran very few risks, but also didn’t get frustrated.”

Spalletti has a versatile view of 3-5-2
He said that it would be a 3-5-2 formation from now on, but as we have seen in the two games so far, it can be interpreted in very different ways.

In the first half against France, it was Lorenzo Pellegrini acting as support for Mateo Retegui, whereas Giacomo Raspadori was more of a genuine striker near Kean tonight.

“Frattesi works so hard and creates this superiority in different areas, but he also knows how to read the game and always finds himself in the right place at the right time. It’s true that we didn’t give Kean enough service, but we did better in the second half and won thanks to our maturity,” added Spalletti.

“I thought long and hard before choosing these players, as I wanted to bring down the average age of the group and the response was perfect. I made a few modifications and the team showed it had the quality I expected.

“Now we just need to reinforce that initial idea and be open to letting others in, along with the two or three who were left at home this time.”

There are injuries for the likes of Nicolò Barella, Gianluca Scamacca, Giorgio Scalvini and Nicolò Zaniolo, but Chiesa was left out following his deadline day transfer to Liverpool.

Considering that Chiesa had struggled to find a role within Max Allegri’s 3-5-2 at Juventus, unhappy with being a support striker and tending to drift out wide, can Spalletti solve that problem?

“I imagine he can play as a support striker, but with more freedom to go near the flanks,” replied the coach.

“This 3-5-2 is versatile, at times it can be a centre-forward with a wider figure, it doesn’t necessarily have to be two central strikers.”

I'd rather he just left him out!

The issue isn't Chiesa - it's more that Italy don't have the flexibility in attacking positions for him to be able to play his natural game which is drifting out wide. They had it previously with Insigne and Immobile being somewhat versatile. But since Insigne went to MLS (and thus effectively ending his international career) and Immobile being replaced by Scammaca who is solely a centre forward.

Majority of modern teams/countries now tend to have a versatile front 3 - where they can interchange positions with ease.

However the Italian national team doesn't have this - which is a big reason they struggle. But if anyone can find a solution it will be Spaletti - he is the one who essentially created the false 9 role when Totti was ageing. Spain just perfected it. So in saying that he's innovative and one of the more forward thinking coaches that's still from the old school era.

In regards to Juventus - he did well and I still don't understand how he doesn't fit into Motta's style of play. He's the only Italian attacker that fits today's expectation of a forward.

A cousin of mine who's a Juve season ticket holder reckons their motives for letting Chiesa (whom he continues to rate highly) leave the club are pretty mixed and have as much to do with their need to raise cash as with anything else. In his view the fact that Motta's said what he said about the player shouldn't necessarily be taken at face value and could well be at least partly down to internal pressures.
