I just had a phone call from a lady who announced in a broad Lancashire accent:
"Good morning, I'm calling you from the Industrial Benefits Office!"
"The Industrial Benefits Office? There is no such institution," I replied.
"Oh, there is now, love!" she replied breezily.
"I'm sorry but I don't take these calls," I said and hung up. I hang up in a similar way about twice every day.
There is something called the Telephone Preference Service which I have been registered with for years. This is supposed to prevent unsolicited sales calls, but it isn't very effective. Many of these nuisance calls I get come up as "international" which the TPS can't do anything about. But some of the numbers are UK numbers. If you plug them into Google, you find websites full of people complaining about nuisance calls from those numbers.
I think the Government should do more to stop these nuisance calls. They are just a minor irritation to me but they must cause major problems to some vulnerable people.
