ANDRIY VORONIN SET TO GO
Liverpool ace set for £3m Hertha Berlin switch

NOTW

16/08/2009
LIVERPOOL'S Andriy Voronin finally looks set for a £3million move to Hertha Berlin.

The Ukraine striker spent last season on loan with the German side in the Bundesliga but a permanent move broke down over his hefty personal terms and he is now back at Anfield.

However, Hertha contacted Liverpool last week to reopen talks and indicated they are prepared to make a new £3m bid.

Anfield boss Rafa Benitez is short of striking options but would cash in on the 30-year-old to boost his transfer kitty ahead of deadline day.

3M is definitely low, but it's got fuck all to do with our transfer kitty, and everything to do with clearing out some wages.

Buying a quality forward could really give us some momentum and inject enthusiasm into the team as well. Fingers crossed.

Voronin's no world beater but he gets a lot of undeserved shit on here. Letting him go now without a replacement would be madness.

exactly, and let's not forget there are only two weeks left in the transfer window.

If we get rid of Voronin, we'll be buying another forward. It would probably also have to be a significant purchase, because, despite all the flak he gets because his wife's a cunt, he's not a bad option. He's happy to be a mercenary, reasonably happy to sit on the bench, and he isn't completely useless.

Except, I'm sure that, as he came on a free, he's picking up a substantial amount of money for sitting about being an option.

and he isn't a very good option at that.

On top of all that, him being at the club is blocking opportunities for the likes of N'Gog, Pacheco and Nemth to get the playing opportunities that they need to be able to progress.

Babel has the tools to deputise for Torres up front

That's my take on it as well.

We keep talking about adding quality back-ups to Torres; and that's our problem.

None of our strikers have that quality, even if they're not useless.

The closest to something approaching quality is probably Kuyt (who's our defacto RM still) and forlorn hopes that Babel will finally 'come good'.

I'm really hoping that selling some of our deadwood allows us to add some quality.

edit : I also have hopes for Pacheco and Nemeth, but not yet.

And if they're thrown to the wolves now, we might regret it.

Liverpool set to triple wages of Javier Mascherano to ward off Barcelona interest

Javier Mascherano will be handed a triple-your-money contract as Liverpool look to keep the Argentina captain out of the clutches of Barcelona.

Anfield boss Rafa Benitez has revealed that he wants talks about a new £90,000-a-week deal to begin immediately after having a number of private meetings with Mascherano.

The 25-year-old wanted the opportunity to speak to the Spanish and European champions after Barca coach Pep Guardiola earmarked him to be his new midfield enforcer.

But Benitez told Mascherano that he would not sell him to the Catalans because he could not compromise Liverpool’s team further after allowing Xabi Alonso to move to Real Madrid.

Mascherano’s current contract – which still has almost three years to run – is worth about £30,000 a week.

That puts him towards the lower end of Anfield’s pay structure and has become a source of contention for the Argentine after Benitez warned Barcelona that it would cost them a minimum of £50m to land their man.

Mascherano wants a pay deal to reflect his value in the transfer market – and Benitez has told Liverpool’s owners that they must now bring him much closer to £120,000-a-week top earners like Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

Benitez said: “I think now is the time to speak to Javier about a new contract. He still has a lot of time on the contract he signed, but I told him that once he came home from the national team then we would talk again.

“Mascherano became unsettled and I had to sit him down to explain that we didn’t want to sell him.

“I can understand why he wanted to listen to Barcelona because they are a top side, a club who won three titles last year. It was not an easy time for him.

“But he knew from the first day that we would not sell him. He is an important player for us.

“I showed him from the beginning how important, signing him from West Ham on loan and then buying him even after he went to the Olympics.â€

Benitez added: “We knew that Alonso would probably leave back in April and when his agent came to see us on May 15 we knew it was a certainty.

“Xabi wanted to leave and although we wanted to keep him, once he asked for a move it was clear the only thing we could do was get the best price for him.

“With Javier it has been different. Barcelona’s interest has been through rumours, making him unsettled.

“That made it easier to communicate with him and I think he needed to hear that we just wouldnâ€t sell.â€

Bang goes next seasons transfer kitty.

Which unsurprisingly are the busiest two !

I was listening to the Guardian podcast and they were reckoning that the top four are waiting to the very last moment to move for their targets. The reason being they are afraid of Man City coming in at the last minute trying to steal the transfer the way they tried with Berbatov.
