We simply have nobody to fill that void that is injury free and has shown they can consistently perform in that position.

We should not be selling Johnson this summer.

I've no idea why we would want to sell one of our most consistent performers, who is a regular for England and conducts himself immaculately on and off the pitch.

Because he isn't actually helping us win.

I know how good he can look - look being the important word. But a player who gets so much of the ball and does so little of note with it, all the while being a liability at the back is not actually a good player.

One day there might be a way of valuing players in terms of the goals they add to a team. I can guarantee Johnson will be a minus. A big expensive minus. He'll be the poster boy for exactly what to avoid in future.

Should also be noted that his value is only going to decline from this point onwards as he ages.

We haven't signed

Isn't a RB's primary objective to defend the flanks and help us not conceded goals and not lose ?
Supporting the attack comes second for me.
Regardless, we seemed to have struggled to sign the players to add to the team this summer so how about for a bit we just concentrate on buying for now.

I'm inclining towards selling him if the appropriate offer comes and an appropriate replacement is available.

I won't sell this season and with Kelly returning will be open to offers next season provided the latter is over his injuries and progresses accordingly.

Surely the question should then be: Should we buy a new RB (and who)?

and not "Let's sell Johnson"

If Johnson is sold, Kelly would be my first choice RB, Henderson 2nd choice and Wisdom 3rd choice. Would such arrangement constitute a serious drop in quality, attacking contribution and defensive solidity compared to what Johnson brings to the table? No, not likely. Do we have to buy another RB to replace Johnson - no, we don't.

It would make sense to have defenders who can defend well and forwards who attack well...

We have been suffering with the opposite...see Johnson and Downing...

Harry Kewell tore johnson a new arsehole...if that didn't alarm us, we should be by now wise to the guy's shit defending after watching him for three years.

Yes we should sell him!

17 Aug vs Stoke (H):

Majority of the time, Johnson received the ball inside of Stoke’s half, compared to Jose Enrique on the left side, who got the ball about an equal number of times in both halves. Johnson also had the fifth highest number of passes by any player in the final third, above both Daniel Sturridge and Iago Aspas and had the most number of take-ons in the match from either side as well, with 5 of his attempts coming in Stoke’s half.

Yes, no argument from me here. If he plays like this consistently, he is worth every penny of his 80/week salary.

I think that goes without saying. The point is, he doesn't, hence the discussion.

For the record, I like him and think we should keep him. Our main priority defensively is to establish a solid central partnership as far as I'm concerned.

For me, it really depends how Kelly does in the next few months. If he can prove himself to be healthy and productive, it might be prudent to sell Johnson before his form drops to the ground again.

For the time being though, I'm happy to keep him as long as he keeps up his production.
