Does he fuck.

He's equalled Bobby Charlton's england goal scoring record. He really is the darling of the press isn't he after making a career of scoring in qualifiers and friendlies, and doing sweet fuck all in the tournaments. They're raving about him. Ignoring the fact that he can't score for shit in the league as of late, and has only twice in his career achieved 20+ league goals, in 13 years in the premier league.

Charlton 106 games 49 goals
rooney 106 games 49 goals
Crouch 42 games 22 goals

Sorry, but rooney is bang average and has been for years.

Not old enough to have seen Charlton at his footballing peak but have seen pics of his comb-over. Definite quality there.

Are you sure?

I think the press have been quite level headed in their praise. I have heard a lot of 'But he has never done it in tournaments' etc

I also think its churlish to suggest that the player who is going to end up England AND Manchester Uniteds all time record goalscorer isnt up there.

He also never took penalties for England or Freekicks or Pens for United either. So hes scored most of them from open play and not to forget that he also played all over the park including centre midfield and left wing to accomodate Ronaldo.

I hate the cunt but his record is impressive.

And of that isnt enough, we are playing them next weekend so stfu.

Think Oncy's nailed it there. I don't like Rooney but he's a top class talent who's ridiculously criticised.

Just imagine if he was an Italian playing for Juventus and about to break both those records?

Or Spanish and playing for Barcelona.

I think we see him all the time and see these runs where he doesnt score for a while. Then he scores 10 straight.
His record is amazing. Manchester United (soon) and Englands all time top scorer. Records that have stood for decades.

6 of his 49 goals have come in tournaments over a 12 year span. 1 in World Cup Finals.

He's a flat track bully.

at least he's from Croccy - which is the best that can be said for the potato-headed granny-shagging man blue-nose

It's typical tribalism in Football.
If it was one of our lot breaking such a record we'd be all over it. People can downplay it all they want, 'but most of his goals have been against shite' and comments like that, but fair play to him. It's a seriously impressive feat whatever way you look at it.

Except that being Barcelonas top goalscorer would be a way more impressive feat. Utds record is 249, Barca is 415 and counting. Yes its still impressive but it has to be viewed in context.

Even in the 1970 World Cup when Charlton was clearly past his best, West Germany were scared enough of him to make Beckenbauer do a marking job on him in the World Cup quarter-final. Even so we took a 2-0 lead, at which point Ramsey took Charlton off to sub another defender on. This set Beckenbauer free to score W.Germany's first goal and the Germans eventually won 3-2, a bit like Rafa taking Masher off in Athens and letting Kaka off the leash. Rooney's record is tremendous whichever way you slice it, but as a player he's not in Charlton's class or anywhere near it. The numbers do not tell the whole story.

To me it's one of the great mysteries of life. Have they done a recount? I know Rooney began as a precocious and exciting talent, but I cannot fathom how he's got to this point when the likes of Lineker and Shearer failed. They were all vastly more impressive as goalscorers. It's been years since Rooney struck me as a striker as such. I don't know what he is these days. That's part of his problem. But people would be deluding themselves if they got very excited about this achievement. Has he truly been world class? Has he scared the best defenders? Has he won many important games? I guess maybe the latter, but I can't recall any. Charlton remains hugely impressive because he managed that total from midfield. But you look at the achievements of great players and it all makes sense. You look at Rooney and you just scratch your head and think, 'How did that happen?'

I dont disagree with any of the negatives by the way. The point was the Op suggested the press were fawning all over him and ignoring when and where he scored. I think his record has been cut to pieces. Sky are doing a piece about how rubbish his big goals record is.
