No that’s exactly the contrary to what I’m saying and have been saying, irrespective of high press from the front….you’ll get punished and concede a hatful if your midfield is disfunctioned and leaving so much space behind them.

You get punished when your forward press goes to sleep and you allow the opposition time to ping accurate balls into space behind your defence.

It was all on show.

But to your point - we’ve replaced the midfield - so it’s suggesting it’s not a personnel problem - it’s systemic - different players, same problem.

To summarize:

- We have no problems scoring goals
- Szobo and Macca will be great
- We desperately need a DM
- We could do with a RB
- The Trent experiment is not working right now
- Diaz or Jota will start alongside Salah and Gakpo

What are we doing with Trent if we sign a RB?

First we tell him to fucking play as a RB like he did between 2017-2021.
If he wants to be a midfielder, well I guess he'll have to compete with Szobo, Macca and the rest.
That's where that new RB comes in.

Two of those pinged balls, resulting in two goals, were offside though.

Yeah - but the issue was the lack of pressure on the player making the pass.

We can’t commit players forward, play a high line and then just stand off.

You've got far far bigger problems than your forward press going to sleep if someone like KIM is able to loop one over our enter midfield to a player who's 1 on 1 against an isolated Matip in all sorts of space.

& in any case that came in the first half, so you can't fault Nunez for that 1 I'm afraid.

From 3-2 to 3-4 and the team was Alisson, Gomez, Konate, Quansah, Tsimikas, O’Connell, Clark, Elliott, Doak, Nunez, Diaz.
In other words its irrelevant for the start of the season unless we’re always going to play our league cup team.

Agreed, but its also about setting them offside if we have the control. We had that for two of the goals

So we drop Mac A or Slobbers for Trent?

Potentially yes, I don't believe so much in the word "drop" because as I've always said....every senior in the squad will get adequate game time. If we wanna play 3223 then we can include all 3....for when we wanna revert back due to injury, suspension or simply rest than we can bring back a proper RB in....Robbo can go back to being a proper LB, it just gives us more of a plan B system wise.

Same as last season, no DM.
Mental we are here again.

Good game though but Trent can’t play where here is without a DM and expect not to get bummed. And Jones is never a DM.

It's unfair of me to call that team Scunthorpe United.
That's Leeds United.

becker could try to save it tho
Possibly couldv'e done better with Sane's first half aswell but tbh he also made about 3-4 good stops.....players in front of him let him down.

We literally had only Matip and Virg back in our defensive third when Sane tapped it under Ali, no one else even close to helping out.

Well I missed a decent game by looks of it. From what highlights I've just watched....
If it wasn't for Allison we'd have lost by a few and
Nunez is shit!

That one was the press not working.

Last one, Nunez could have pressed a bit more.

I don’t think Diaz is great at pressing either.

Or let me be more accurate, both Nunez & Diaz run about a fair bit, but often their closing down is easily bypassed - whether that’s them making bad decisions or team-mates not joining l, I don’t know.

I also think tonight, Mac A wasn’t as good positionally when we lost possession - he’s drifting inside at the same time as Trent is, Salah’s not great at pressing and that’s exposing too much space on the right.

Normally Konate would come across to fill that but Matip stayed to central.

In terms of leading the press and being good at it - Slobbers & Jota are the 2 best at it - Gakpo is good at dropping deep at cutting out passing channels.

I feel like we’d be better balanced with Slobbers at RM and Mac A at LM with Jota as the left sided attacker and Gakpo through the middle - which we haven’t seen yet.

I don’t think Jones is terrible in the DM role, but we’d be in all sorts of strife if we don’t bring someone in.

I don’t know what to do about Trent. Sorry, I’m not in the sign a RB club - I’d rather sign a CB that can cover Konate whe he’s inevitably injured.

I think I have a temporary solution to that DM problem. Keyword being "temporary".
His name is Thiago.
If he's fit he just has to play. Has the intelligence and the skill to put in a shift there imo. I honestly believe that he's our only option as is.

As should've Clark. Either side of the keeper instead of straight at him and it was a goal...and we were out of sight at 4-2.
True. But there’s a reason I let him off the hook. He isn’t our most expensive player who has a history of missing big chances.

Who's at fault here?
Should Van Dijk and Robbo have dropped deeper?
Where Matip and Trent too far up the pitch?
Also, shouldn't Trent be the one trying to catch up with Gnabry?

The problem isn't seen from that still shot.....the back line there is fine, you'll see the problems appear if it were a 30 second clip. Trent is already on the move to close the space once the ball is played....the problem is the midfield 3 are very static and don't react but you'd see this from the highlights.
