Re Can, there's something a little bit like Kompany about him, he played as a midfielder too and was eased into a defensive role, great on the ball, scores a couple of goals, etc. Could be the real deal. All this talk about Rodgers buying shite, some of these lads really excite me for the future, particularly Markovic, Manquillo, Moreno and Can.
Exactly the point I made to Ryan in another thread. I also think there's hope for Lovren.

Liking Can. looks like a proper footballer. Heir to SG throne for me. Great to see Markovic doing well as well, other sides will now also see him as a threat which will help Sterling an Coutinho/Lallana.

Great performance by Lucas. Nothing fancy. Just a lof of dirty work.
None of our midfielders display the same type of anticipation and ability to stop attacks further up the field.
It's absolutely essential that we don't let him go.

Apart from the obvious of Markovic and Coutinho, I think Sakho has been brilliant for us in the last few games. Composed, intelligent and his decision making has improved. Knows when to just stick it into touch or make the pass and less passes to the keeper.

I've been impressed as I thought he had become overawed with the place.

Sakho looks so erratic, but he's the most composed defender we have. His skills, passing, and reading of the game generally are top notch

I dont think id sen Gerrard look so happy as when he was when congratulating Ming on his clean sheet at full time..

He's off apparantly. Hope we have a replacement lined up.

I think Rodgers wants all-rounders in midfield rather than specialist DMs and AMs, and Lucas doesn't offer enough going forward to fit into that. I don't have a problem with that approach in principle, but I'd be happier to move in that direction if we had a reliable defensive set-up. As long as we don't, I'm uneasy about doing away with the idea of a DM.

It would hurt us as much as losing Sturridge has. To the same degree. Not having a specialist at DM is nonsense imo.

I couldn't disagree much more with the philosophy you lined out above. We can't afford a player who can do the DM and play like xavi at the same time, so Lucas is the natural compromise, right??

No, I don't think he is, because despite his other strengths he's not effective when he himself goes forward.

However, as I said in that post, I too wouldn't want to be without a DM at this stage of our development. Nor would I want just one in the squad until we've improved a lot in our defensive play so, unless we're going to bring two DMs in, I wouldn't let Lucas go at this stage.

I don't think we've got enough credit for our performance yesterday.

Sunderland were shite, but they couldn't get near us in that first half. We controlled the game, created plenty of chances and looked comfortable all over the pitch.
Second half, we dropped off and had some dodgy spells even with the man advantage but we still had chances to finish it off.

Oh and Spurs, United and Chelsea have been to Sunderland this season...and all 3 failed to come away with a win.
