Lucas would be fine playing in a team with genuine world-class players around him. United have proved that having quality in the central midfield position isn't crucial to be successful providing there is sufficient talent elsewhere. But in our style of play and system, the CM position really is key - we don't have game stretching, creative wide men to open teams up, and therefore we need someone at CM with a creative mind to help unlock defences once they have reformed, and unfortunately Lucas isn't up to the job.

Of course Aquilani was bought with that in mind, not Lucas. But the understanding that Lucas would be competent enough to bide us over has proved to a catastrophic misplacement of faith and could well cost Benitez his job.

I don't get how opinions on Lucas are so polarised. He's simply a squad player promoted to the first team because of injury.

He's just filling in until senior players return, his appearences will diminish now, Macherano's return and Aquilani's improving fitness will see to that.
