Mignolet worries - part deux

He'll never be good enough. Decent keeper, nothing more. Reina is a far superior keeper in every respect. Sadly he stopped trying with us.

He may well improve loads. Let's see.

My random reason for not having much faith in him - top keepers ooze confidence and personality.

Mignolet looks like the most boring cunt in the squad, quite like Westerveld.

Flapper Sander!?! I remember I called him that on KopTalk once and nearly got banned!

As for Ming - I am afraid to say he's a worry. There are several other GK in the PL that play for lesser teams that I would have over him if I'm honest. Still he's young and with the right coaching under Rodgers who knows.

I agree. Sadly he is being coached by Achterburg not Rodgers. We could do a lot better.

I have to say though, Rodgers seems ruthless enough at changing things that he perceives aren't working. His night of the long knives in the academy, his firm decisions on the likes of Borini and Sahin when they're not working out. I trust him to change things.

Indeed. A steel fist inside a velvet glove, or something.

He'll be our nr 1 next season aswell. Hopefully people will have a bit of patience but most have made up their minds already I see. I doubt Rodgers wants to change things around as I dont think he sees Ming as a problem.
Was one of the best goalkeepers in the league last season and is still adapting to a new club.
All in all he's been good for us, certainly much better than Reina was last season and he'll continue to improve.
Get an organized and settled defence infront of him and get in 2 quality defenders and let the back 5 get some time together.
You'd think he's been crap the entire season judginhg by some of the comments which is very far from the truth.

I'm sick of hearing about Reina after the two previous seasons he had for us. Great that he can pass the ball and be a sweeper but saving shots is also required....

Considering how good Pepe was for us and was hugely important in our FA Cup win I think that is more than harsh mate.
Is Pepe the answer to our goalkeeping needs now?
I really don't think so.
But there are genuine concerns about Simon's ability to step up to the mark as well.
We all hope he does but in defending him I don't think there is a need to disrespect his illustrious predecessor.

Thing is Hansern, all of that post is ifs, buts and maybes, you don't know what Rodgers is thinking, nor do any of us.

Il'd be very suprised if Rodgers wasn't at least a bit concerned by Mig, for me his early season form is cancelled out by his latter form, hes about par if not a bit less than that, certainly nothing more than par, hopefully he can have a storming last 11 games and put some of the doubts to rest.

Agree about Reina though, wouldn't want him back and we done the right thing in attempting to replace him.

Mate, its got nothing to do with how good he was for us. He was fantastic and one of the best goalkeepers we've had for yonks.
But it seems like people forget the last two seasons just because he's been gone this season. Its easy to just remember how good he was in the years before that.

All I'm saying is give Ming time and I dont see the point in chopping and changing again.
He's been far from as poor as some make out. Got several things to work on but at 25 thats not exactly impossible.
Just because he doesnt eat little babies like Oliver Kahn did doesnt mean he cant become a very good goalkeeper.

I don't think many disagree with that and most are willing to give him more time.
But I don't think that it is unfair to have doubts about whether he will make the step up required.
Hopefully we don't have to revisit the topic next season but I wuildn't bet against it

I'm not willing to give him more time. We're going to leave him at the next planet or spaceport we pass with 20 kopeks and a block of lard for trading.

Agreed mate. Its not unfair at all, but at the same time he's very underrated by some it seems.
When I saw the name Al-Habsi mentioned in the same sentence its just plain wrong imho.

Hopefully we dont have to discuss him next season and he'll play like he did in his first few months all season.

Rodgers wasn't impressed by that letter, whichever envelope Reina posted it in...

Brendan Rodgers has indicated that there is likely to be no way back for Pepe Reina at Liverpool, offering a brusque response to suggestions that the goalkeeper, who is on a season-long loan with Napoli, could still have a future at Anfield.

Reina, 31, has said that he does not know where his future will lie once his loan to Napoli comes to an end, but Rodgers appears to have ruled out the possibility of a return to Liverpool. The goalkeeper wrote a controversial open letter to the Liverpool fans in July, after his temporary departure was confirmed.

Rodgers said: “He wrote a goodbye letter didn’t he? Obviously Pepe made it very clear when he went to Napoli that he was looking to move because he penned a great big letter saying he was going to work with the best manager that he’d worked with [Rafael Benítez] and thanked him for his time for Liverpool. So, for me, it probably sounded like he’d made his decision there.”

In the letter, published on his own website, Reina maintained that he had not wanted to leave, but added “if they [Liverpool] feel that the best thing for me is to go on loan to Napoli for a season, then so be it.”

The future of Daniel Agger also remains uncertain, but Rodgers confirmed that the centre back will start the game away to Southampton tomorrow despite being substituted in last weekend’s 4-3 win over Swansea City.

The third Swansea goal has some Mignolet blame for me too. Skrtel is coming towards his own goal, the ball is on or around the six yard line. The keeper should be coming for that. Plus he's more protected than a defender and can get away with clattering Bony and getting a free kick.

His distribution is slow and laboured, and when he's under any pressure it's actually pretty scary. He is a good shot stopper, but that's a prerequisite for a Prem or indeed any goalie?!?!

I think a keeper like Mignolet needs to somewhat relinquish control of the box to a commanding and vocal CB. He obviously needs to be confident in coming out and communicating, but I don't see him being the one to marshal the defence all the time. He just doesn't seem the sort.

We need a Sami or a Jamie or a Terry in central defence. I don't know if Sakho or Ilori are capable of that, and despite loving them both, Skrtel and Agger have shown they are not.

So for me, the decision lies between looking for a commanding CB or a commanding GK, and I can't think of a single GK like that who might be available. I also think Mignolet will improve with a bit of time, so I would get Sakho back in the team, tell him he owns the defence, and see if he is up to the task.

If he isn't, I hope our scouting or our budget is good enough to find a new CB or GK.

Ming is lucky we have the best front 4 in the league or he'd been under extreme pressure in the media.

I think our defence as a whole would be under the spotlighet not just the goalkeeper.
Every other keeper in the Premier League have made mistakes aswell though so you can say that about most top teams.

He said in the Liverpool Echo: “He’s already written his letter, hasn’t he? He wrote a goodbye letter, didn’t he?
“I was surprised at the letter – when you are a loan player I would expect that he should come back, but obviously Pepe made it very clear when he went to Napoli that he was looking to move.
“He penned a great big letter saying he was going to work with the best manager that he’d worked with (Rafa Benitez) and thanked him for his time for Liverpool. So, for me, it probably sounded like he’d made his decision there.”

a slight expansion on the quotes above re reina.

to be honest , on one hand it's great to have a manger who won't take any shit and is willing to do what he feels best for the club even if it means going against senior players . On the other it's a little disappointing to have reina leave the club under a small cloud . For me , he was holding his own with the best for a few seasons, was a great personality and leader of the club . I hope people remember that in years to come .

He was boss against Swansea last night, perhaps reports of his demise have been greatly exaggerated

Best keeper at LFC in my lifetime. Loved him when he was here.

However if he is boss at Napoli why aren't they getting him a permanent deal. Their owner does spend quite a decent amount. They know 5-8 million would get them Reina.

I don't know if he has been reading the criticism on the forums, they have been working on this on the training pitch or Gerrard put amphetamines in his pre match tea but Ming looked so so much better when our back four had the ball yesterday. Even came off his line for corners and generally looked in command of his area. Still shit at kicking but hey ho this was like night and day from the Swansea match - great to see and hope it continues

Made some cracking saves too.

Simon showed what his strengths are yesterday with that top drawer stop from Rodriguez when it was 1-0.
He was much better at coming off his line and was more dominant when coming for crosses.
More performances like that and there won't be any more of these threads.

He's a good keeper playing behind a shaky defence

Don't know why people are surprised his confidence was kaput recently
