LFC v WBA match thread

We need both - more players of Suarez' quality AND somebody who can be relied on to stick the ball away. We probably don't have the money to do it all at once, so priority 1 for me is that goalgetter. Macca's spot on - stick Robbie Fowler in the current side and we're in the CL spots. Then we can push with a few more Suarezes.

We're a midtable side partly because of his selfish play and shite finishing.

Unapplied talent is completely pointless.

This reminds me of the Gerrard bashing of a few years ago when he wasn't super human EVERY game.

Though your probably on a wind up.

suarez does quite brilliantly to get to the byline all he has to do is pull the ball back to TWO liverpool players waiting in the box and, well, I'm not exactly sure what he tries to do, is he taking a shot? is he firing the ball across the area? lift your head up luis ffs.

I don't think it'd make that much of a difference, but if we have some more quality next year, he'll benefit massively and score more.

Especially if he isn't playing as a striker.

Of course he will ... The success of this club this year has been put on his shoulders - he had to score and provide ... He couldn't do it ... I think with a better supporting cast, as you say, he'll produce more ... and then, most people will still want to sell him.

One thing we have to do next season: either Gerrard is able to contend for every match or he isn't. His 'will he, won't he' role this season, after declaring himself 'fitter than in years,' has helped to feck our season. Without him we need to reorganise and move on. With him we need to recover some discipline in the centre. But this shilly-shallying from one thing to another has gone on since last autumn and has contributed to our problems. I have no idea what his problem is but it has to be dealt with this summer. If he can come back, as a regular, great. If he can't, we need to give his replacements (Shelvey etc) their head.

I don't think that last bit is true. Not everybody has Rosco's amazing taste for unbalanced vendettas.

How I wish another Fowler existed.
Best finisher around, but an incredibly intelligent, great footballer too.

However Fowler had a way better attacking, creative team around him back in the 90's.
We simply need better players to pass forwards or get past players, before we start thinking about finishers.

Those stats about the number of times we've hit the woodwork say different. We do need better players, but we have to start somewhere and that HAS to be with a top finisher.

There's Soldado, Cavani and David Villa.
Here's an unknown, Bas Dost in Heerenveen, 22 games 28 goals.

Suarez isn't a selfish player at all.

And his poor finishing isn't even nearly as important as at least a dozen other reasons as to why we're a midtable side.

I'd like to to state that I still don't understand what a 'finisher' means.

Though I was absolutely certain that today's result would prompt a few 'we just need a finisher' lines.

Do they mean a player with fantastic movement, who creates time and space advantages in the final third, and hence consistently gets into good goalscoring positions (and finishes them). Like van Nistelrooy and Fowler?

Because it's a little insulting to call them 'finishers'. They were world class 'strikers'.

The word 'finisher' brings to mind supposed 'specialist goalscorers' like Defoe and Bent. You know, like the 'specialist crosser' Downing. Because that kind of player is the last kind of player we need. Another Suarez would add infinitely more value to our side than that kind of player.

Basically we need someone who can bag 20+ in the league and we need the midfield to start chipping in more regularly. Someone like Torres in his first 2 seasons here!

That's a bit cryptic though, no? Because you need to be a lot more than just a 'finisher' to bang in 20 a season.

Keep: Reina, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Gerrard, Suarez, Lucas (assuming he recovers his form). The rest I wouldn't miss.

Well if Carroll was on 20+ goals for this season and our current midfielders like Henderson and Downing were chipping in as well I dont see it being too cryptic to work out that we'd be way better off than we are now.

I think we are creating chances but they are half chances rather than sitters (although there have been sitters) I think we need players to help us create GENUINE chances to open up teams at will.

if we go down the route of thinking it's a simple case of adding a finisher to convert our half chances all we are going to do is add another attacker who adds nothing outside the box other than pass it sidesways we'll be no better off because this player wont get genuine chances to tuck away and will probably end up like kuyt being shunted out wide to become ineffective.
