Match Thread Spurs (A) - Coca Cola Cup Semi First Leg - Weds 20:00

The goals that we've conceded have largely been excellent finishes. Think last night, bith Man U goals...

Slot himself said, and someine on SCM, that we conceded these chances before, and got a bit lucky they werent taken, and now we're being a bit unlucky. Not too much has changed that you can't put down to Ibou being injured. Even saying that Gomez did well.

And of course last night 3 out of 4 were a 'new' backline, with a CM playing as a CB for most of the game with reintroductions for two CBs back after injury. I don't think they did badly all things considered.

Spurs hardy had a decent chance and although the goal was superbly taken we only had 10 players on the pitch since Tsimi was still off because of the injury incurred by Bergvahl's tackle, which should have resulted in a 2nd Yellow.

Sky are focussed on other things, Sky coverage over last few years has become so dumbed down. Rarely anything interesting and normally that’s just Sturridge. Glad I cancelled it.

Agreed in general, but given they banged on about the missed sending off and resultant goal as a ref/var critical point, it just seemed ridiculous that they didn’t mention the potential missed pen (and 5 second var check) at all.

Refs, VAR, commentary, Sky etc…they’re just a level of shit that wouldn’t be tolerated in my line of work.

This game also highlighted how badly we need attacking reinforcements. Darwin is just a non entity as a striker option. With every chance he got last night you just knew it wouldn't result in a goal. When Salah isn't firing and Gakpo/Diaz aren't on it would be rather lovely to have a class forward as your 9 to spread out the goals.

Jota couldnt pick out a forward pass yesterday to save his life and you replace him with the most goal shy forward ever.
We desperatly need an upgrade. In terms of link up play but also someone you know will be clinical.

Exactly this.
It's all about perspective though. I mean, Spurs quality came mostly from our fuck ups, we were the ones who were starting to build up pressure in the game, we just had an off day in the final third. Their keeper had a good debut and that helped Spurs look a lot more solid than they have in a long time. So they improved on their norm and we dipped on ours, it happens. The game itself was fairly balanced, with us bossing the 2nd half more, but they did what they needed to do and had a bit of a smash and grab, at home. I wouldn't say we deserved nothing. We should have had a pen at the end, we should have seen their player sent off, we could have had a couple more cards ourselves. It was fairly balanced overall, neither of us deserved anything really. Spurs got a nice pat on the back for putting in a shift, for once.

We need a spine really. We've bought a keeper, we need another centre half, another strong midfielder and a striker who can play centrally and make things happen and/or hold the ball up better. I don't think Jota or Nunez will ever be anything more than options in this respect and I suspect Slot will get rid of Nunez soon anyway

Yeah, I think Darwin is off this summer. No way Slot wants to keep him.

Yep - my view is that one of Jota or Nunez will be kept at back up (likely Jota) and we will bring in a more natural goal scorer who hopefully isn't injury prone.

Jota is good down the middle, but let's remember he was a left winger when we signed him (like Nunez too). We need someone who's natural game is through the middle.

I thought he was very unlucky - great save from the keeper - from that flick.
Yep, he was and it was a great save and that shot from Darwin is all he could really and it would have clipped in had the goalkeeper not saved it. Now the question is ... would Alisson have saved that ? Part of me thinks No.

It was. It's exactly the sort of goal he does score, like the one against Madrid. He was just unfortunate with this one. If he had to think about it, obviously we'd have rightly been slating him to fuck for another miss.

I've made it clear before that I don't like having to rely on the ref to win games.
So yeah maybe, Bergvall should have been sent off and maybe Jones should have got a pen, but we should also have made Spurs look like the shit team they are because they were playing fucking Dragusin and Archie Moore in defence.

Should have, would have. Our shittest spells this season haven't been catastrophic, and 1-0 to claw back at home isn't either. We didn't play well but we were still arguably unlucky, they got the rub of the green with a couple of the bigger decisions, we didn't. We've been on the positive end of it before this season and no one complained really then about shit performances, we got the result and moved on.

Slot needs to use the squad more, but in his defense we played our strongest XI last night and lost, so a weakened time "might" have been on the end of a worse result and less chance of getting to the final. We caught Spurs in buoyant mood despite a weakened team, a one off. Not that long ago we beat Madrid and City in the same week. We need a recharge, but a couple of below par games isn't a reason to go all hysterical either, just because the result on paper didn't materialise. That's football.

A rotated team might also have been fresher/fitter and hungrier. Too many of our players are playing full 90s game after game. They are losing the final 1% of hunger required to tip the margins.

I am getting worried that we are going to do exactly what we did last season - burn out

This applies to Mo and Gravy only. Everyone else has had time out of the side. Apart from van Dijk and I don’t think a centre back is that much of a concern. Especially when he reads the game so well.

Slot needs to look at when to really rest players. Mac has been unbelievable since his little break. We need to sort out when we can give that break to some of the others.

Well Gakpo has played a lot recently, Jones too (for him - who rarely goes more than 7 games without then getting injured for the next 7). Macca has been great, which is also a good reason to also rest him ahead of Forest.

But agree that Gravy and Mo should really get that time off if Slot is going to play them both for full 90s back to back to back

Gakpo never gets a full 90. He tends to get 60 or 30.

I agree with Jones. We lack energy in midfield and Slobby has been missed.
