Let's talk about Coutinho

Don't have one.

Watching the WC from your lounge isn't particularly harrowing, though.

I really don't understand you. I said HE had a harrowing world cup. I believe he played in it, did he not? And it was a disastrous and humiliating campaign which he, as captain, took very, very personally. That seems pretty harrowing on his terms, does it not? Is this national WUM day where you come from?

Lallana's the latest fortunate recipient of the Jose Enrique award.

i.e. Becomes a better and more valuable player being injured by having others amble around haplessly in his place.

He wasn't in the squad... or have I been whooshed?

Don't you love Lallana and hate Enrique?

This is the Coutinho thread, sir.

Yes, as my comments on Coutinho confirm, sir.

Ok, I wasn't being facetious, macca.

I think people are just confused that you appear to be referring to Gerrard in this thread.

Not saying that's wrong or anything, just that it's thrown people slightly.

Ahhh I'm onto it now.

That's not happening here. People are just rightfully saying he could come in for Coutinho.

Some pills make you bigger, some pills make you small, but the ones that mother gives you don't do anything at all

Love Lallana, massive fan. Just seeing that usual trend of players getting more appreciated the longer they're injured.

I've said from day one he'll be immense for us.

Fair enough. Hope you're right. I'm quite apprehensive about his signing, actually. We'll see.

I don't get that apprehension at all. I honestly can't think of a realistic target who would be better suited to slot straight into a Brendan Rodgers team.

I think he's a good player, and he will suit our style of play and vice versa. I just think we may have overpaid and perhaps could have used much of the money elsewhere in positions where we're not so well stocked. I also think some of the players we have in his position are, or have the potential to be, better than him. We have Coutinho, Sterling, Markovic in that area already, and while it's good to have strength in numbers, we're a bit unbalanced... particularly when we look at full back, for example. Those are the reasons for my apprehension really, not his ability.

What on earth is going on here? Macca has bundled some Gerrard posts in the Coutinho thread I think.

HEY MACCA, this is the Coutinho thread. Read back on your recent posts.

I think to debate Coutinho requires a debate on Lallana and for me Lallana > Coutinho.

As you were fellas.

I dont really see the point in comparing him to David Silva in this thread. There is about 7 years difference and Coutinho is a young player that will have his ups and downs.
He obviously needs to work on his consitency but that will come imho.

Wasn't that the point I made? I wasn't comparing their talents at their current ages, I was pointing out that Silva was far from the finished, consistent article at the same age.

Ive never been Coutinhos greatest fan.
I prefer a player who gives you consistent 7's rather than one week 5 the next 9.

It was the reason Garcia used to wind me the fuck up. If they are having an off day you get literally nothing. Coutinho for all his talent rarely delivers on the pitch. Is that fair? Rarely? In the 2 years he has been here how many match winning performances has he produced? The odd moment of genius aside there is very little.
In fact his first 6 months was his best 6 months.

I hope he turns it round, but when im doing my starting line ups Hes almost always left out.

I liked Garcia, but Coutinho is NOTHING like him, it's a wayward comparison. Garcia had fleeting moments of brilliance in games, Coutinho has ran games and pulled the strings throughout, but he's shown he can't do it every time. Garcia was an occasional match winner but he didn't play as the fulcrum of creativity throughout games.

This is also true. I think they're both as inconsistent as each other but in different ways. Garcia could be shite all game and whip out a 30 yard screamer. Coutinho can bust his arse all game but nothing will come off for him at all. You can just tell within 20 minutes if things are going to go Coutinho's way for the rest of the game or not.

Oh christ, my sincere apologies all round then. I'm dealing with copy-edits of two different books together today against the clock and it's obviously frazzled my brain! So sorry.

Coutinho was sensational in pre-season then simply fell away. His been poor in the last 2 games. Not sure what happened but we have the depth to bench him now. That may just be the kick up the arse he needs.
