Gary McAllister - why sign a geriatric?

Really? I was made up when we signed him - he'd taken on the whole of the ManU midfield in the Cup Final that year and made them look second-rate before Gullit inexplicably subbed him. It was one of the best individual performances I'd seen in an FA Cup Final for years.

A lot of people didn't rate him. They even had a segment on match of the day where they looked at some of his video clips to try and explain why Liverpool had signed him. I remember Hansen showed a 40 yard pass he played against someone to demonstrate his range of abilities.

I think defensive midfielders were very much out of fashion at the time. There was an ongoing argument over whether they contributed enough to the team. Deschamps (water carrier was considered an insult) might have been the best example of that.
