Getting Downing out of Liverpool

I can't see there being a load of cash to spend in January so doing something with Downing could be important into getting our season back on track, and by doing something I mean binning him off.

Who would be interested? And realistically how much could we get for him?

Something we could consider is swapping him for Bent, who appears on his way out at Villa after clashing with Lambert and has been replaced by someone from Genk. Downing could have few complaints if we wanted him gone; for him, going back to the club where he played the best football of his career should be appealing.

The other option is taking £6/7M from Stoke and putting it towards Djemba Ba if he's still got a clause in his contract(?)

during this summer transfer window I thought we could get 11m for him, now I think double figures would be generous.

I wouldn't mind doing a swap with sunderland for conor wickham - if his career has stalled, then sunderland may want to cash in on a 'proven mid-table winger' whereas we can take a punt on serious potential.

I think the best thing Downing could do is go somewhere abroad: try a new culture,away from all the cynicism, and prove himself to the club. Sadly, of course, if had the kind of mentality that would encourage him to do such a thing, he wouldn't need to go because he could improve here. He needs re-wiring.

No one who wants him will pay him more than 2million a year, so he'll want the 6m just for leaving. Anyone wanting him will pay 6m max.

The long and short of all that is that it will effectively be a free transfer for whoever wants him.

My first thought was that you were talking about some sort of smuggling or trafficking operation, in order to physically get Downing out of Liverpool, because of some serious problem. The thought never even occurred to me about being able to get him off the squad list.

Yep. We effectively did the same with Adam. 6m fee but 5m back to him to compensate wage differences.

I think he left any of the tools he had out in the rain during the summer of 2011.
Anything we can recoup for this useless lump would be good business.
I don't like slagging Liverpool players but I am happy to make an exception with downing.
If he had any self respect he would encourage a move and take a drop.
He has been displaced by a seventeen year old, is third choice behind him and a 3m pound Moroccan, and is lucky to keep getting a game for the second string in minor cup games.

Where is his pride, his passion, indeed his fucking gonads? He dies not looked parsed in the slightest.
