This kinda blows a big gaping hole into the SCM Boardroom Inner Sactuary We know What's Going On Behind The Scenes And We're Gonna Give Rafa An Online Raping For It doesn't it?

What with Rafa repeating ad nauseum that he wants Alonso to stay, and Barry being chatted up by some Arabs at Citeh, it's not really been a good start to the summer for the boys.

Fire away...
That's totally unnecessary, obviously they're just going on what they've heard. And I, for one, appreciate it when people share information, and I'm guessing it's posts like this that make the mods reluctant to share.

Like with any 'insider info', you have to take it with a pinch of salt, it's not set in stone.
Pffft, fucking nonsense.

You make it out like it was some 'don't shoot the messenger' titibit of info that was passed on.

Was it fuck. Did you read the thread? Ross/Sheik and whomever else completely set the agenda, absolutely slaughtered Rafa for it, and had the temerity to harangue anyone who dared question it. I suggest you go back and re-read it.

If you're going to set you stall out like that, then you're gonna have to take it on the other side when it turns out your info is fucking rubbish. There's a difference between 'here's some news that could happen' and setting the agenda for the entire Forum.

They weren't naive enough to think this wouldn't be brought to their attention either, hence their ensuing silence.
I did read the thread. It was speculative, as was the reaction. As is pretty much everything on this site and every other fan site.

I don't see what the big deal is.

Fair play to City for tying up this deal quickly.

I'm a little bit disappointed, to be honest, because if Xabi were to force his way out I felt Barry would be a good replacement and now we're left with less options.

As for Barry, he should've waited until he knew Arsenal & Liverpool weren't interested in him, because now he looks greedy and a liar.
It's hardly inconceivable that his agent contacted the two clubs when the City offer came in and was told that we weren't interested at that price.
We don't need him at present - though I do agree that on reflection the Barry to Liverpool link died down some time ago. I still think Barry could've held out longer if he did actually seek Champions League football.

Now he'll help push a shit club into being a 'good' club and maybe lift a League cup along the way. Congratulations Gareth.

He does look greedy, stupid, desperate and mendacious, but how do we know what contact there may have been?

Perhaps we said straight up we wouldn't match those absurd wages?

Also, City moved quickly because a club like them needs to adopt a smash and grab, shock and awe "LOOK AT THE WAGES WE'RE WILLING TO GIVE YOU SIGN NOWWWWWW!" approach, because otherwise they run the real risk that a proper club will come along and turn the player's head.

He's fucked himself over.

Zero ambition.
You could argue he's shown a lot of ambition by taking a gamble that the world's richest club will break into the big time during his time there. After all, we've won nothing for three seasons now so coming to us to win trophies is no sure thing either. It will be much easier to judge when the transfer window is closed and we see who City have also signed. I think we should be a little worried by this.
You'd have a pretty weak argument on your hands. He's getting on a bit now, and it's a damn sight more likely that he would have won some serious silverware with either us or Arsenal than he will at Citeh. They may have a decent squad, but they don't have the right manager to take them past us or Arsenal, which is where he could have been playing.

Citeh have megabucks and will no doubt assemble a great squad over the coming seasons, but it's not as simple as that. They need the right manager to be able to make an immediate impact. Why go to Citeh and wait for CL footy and silverware etc when he could have come to us or gone to the Arse and had it all a damn sight quicker? Answer=££££££££££££
Did we bid for him this summer? Did Arsenal?
Do you know that we didn't? We were willing to pay a lot for him last season and i'm sure we may well have been tempted again. He's also just the sort of player Arsenal need and has been linked to them before. He didn't exactly hang about in joining Citeh, did he?
It would normally be reported (not least by City) if two of the Top 4 had been in for Barry and they'd signed him instead.

The point is you (and others) are slagging him off for joining City rather than us or Arsenal when you've got no idea whether he even had that option.

As for not hanging about, perhaps the speed of the transfer was one of its appeals (along with the money, natch) after the drawn-out mess that we and Villa made of it last summer.
I think it's pretty safe to assume that if Rafa was willing to blow £18 mill on Barry last year he would have happily blown £10 mill on him this year. The insider info the mods provided would appear to back that up too. But when his agent calls us and Arsenal up and says "hey boys, we have £12mill and £100k a week on the table from Citeh, any increase?", he's hardly going to be met with anything other than a laugh and a no.

The second Citeh were interested, his agent would have gone to them first. He gets a nice cut out of whatever deal he secures for Barry. So of course he'll go to them first and then see if anyone else is daft enough to pay those sorts of figures or more. Once he approaches us with those amounts, of course we won't be interested.

If he really wanted CL footy, I don't doubt for a second he could have had it with us or the Arse, but it would have meant taking a pay cut. Do you really think Rafa would not have taken Barry for £10 mill? I think he'd have taken him in a flash. Wenger too.

I agree with every word, Brendan.

Well, at least Martin O'Neill got what he deserved after last summer's antics. What a kick in the teeth - losing a player to a club that has less to play for next season because 'it's going places'! The master man-manager does it again! Lawro, Lineker and all of his other fans, take note!

Well can you blame barry? Sami moved to us in a similar fashion except for the money involved...

Should i have to explain it in detail?

Sami moved to us from his old club who were guranteed Champions league to us who were in the UEFA cup. He came here because of our ambition to be the best club in the world.

Man city certainly harbour those ambitions too and have shown it in signing Robinho. Given the amount of resources they have anyone who knows football will admit that the only way for Man City is up. Barry can certainly see that in Man City as what Sami saw in us when he joined us.

Later that year Hyypiä joined Dutch club Willem II. Hyypiä spent four years with the Eredivisie team and soon became a favourite with the fans winning the fan's player of the year award in his final season.[3] Hyypiä captained the side to qualification for the Champions League, although he was not to stick around to play in their European campaign the following season.

Comparing transfers from Villa to City and from Willem II to Liverpool is just fucking stupid. Especially in Barry's situation, considering his quotes from last summer.

Why so? The Barry transfer has several parallels with the Sami transfer. From one club that can at best boast of qualification for Europe to a club that might dominate Europe in the distant future.

Barry might have said that things that might make him look like a mercernary now but i'm sure he wouldn't have moved to man city if he wasn't convince that man city could become a dorminant force in Europe while he was there.

Doesn't make him a mercenary though.

For mercenary, look for the tab labeled Winston Bogarde.

Barry is a first choice England player, one of the best midfielder's in the league, has been stalked by Liverpool, Arsenal, and Man City for the past year.

Sami Hyypia (God bless him) wasn't even the reason why scouts went to watch Willem II all those years ago.

You're talking utter tosh.

I'm not talking about a player's stature, i'm talking about the reasons for his move.
Is money the only reason for his move? I'm sure it was a reason but i still believe that the football reason was just as huge.

To be involved in a big project of building a football club and establishing himself as one of their legends. While he could have done that at Arsenal or at Liverpool, his contribution to Man City will definately be bigger than at the forth mentioned clubs and I believe he is sold on the ideal that Man City will have the resources and desire be a force in Europe during his tenure.

There is no comparison to be made - it's fucking ludicrous.

Willem II are some nothing club on the continent who'd achieve absolutely fuck all in Europe, whereas Liverpool are one of the traditional elite European clubs, steeped in history, great players and an exciting future.

DILEMMA DILEMMA!

In the Echo:

Barry has been aware of Liverpool’s ongoing interest but it is believed his desire to move to Merseyside cooled in recent weeks after Benitez told him he had been earmarked for the left-back or left midfield slots rather than his favoured central role.

It makes you wonder why he ever thought he'd come here and play anywhere else! The whole saga gets more mind-numbingly stupid each day.

hee.. what was his background that you considered ;D? obviously I had overlooked that it wasn't his fault that he signed the contract and turned up as he was suppose to and rejected overtures from other clubs dedicated his career to chelsea working everyday of his life with young aspiring footballers in the reserves.. he should be given a fucking nobel prize.

rafa's off his head. buy a player who's value is purely based on his central midfield role and tell him he's gonna play left back - thanks barry u did us all a favour. as for u rafa - ffs get a grip i don't care what your contract says u make the same bellend transfers as u did last year and you'll be out!
