Re Bogarde: I don´t think he signed for Chelsea just for the money (=not a mercenary)...but of course he stayed for the money.

now that you put it that way its an extremely valid point 🙂

Wonder if Barry will turn out like Bogarde...

Well can you blame barry? Sami moved to us in a similar fashion except for the money involved...
Oh shut up, you bellend
Should i have to explain it in detail?

Sami moved to us from his old club who were guranteed Champions league to us who were in the UEFA cup. He came here because of our ambition to be the best club in the world.

Man city certainly harbour those ambitions too and have shown it in signing Robinho. Given the amount of resources they have anyone who knows football will admit that the only way for Man City is up. Barry can certainly see that in Man City as what Sami saw in us when he joined us.
Holy shite. You're comparing Sami being tempted by the chance to play for the most successful English team in history, a club with a proud past such as ours, to Barry's transfer to Citeh?

Fuck me.

I do wonder if Barry's departure could see other players from Villa jumping ship too. He was their captain and one of their most important players, and with City strengthening the way they have and will, Villa must realise that their chances of finishing 4th and playing in the CL are beginning to look even slimmer.

Cheeky bid for Young.

Yes. Two clubs with an exciting future.

At that point of time for Sami, giving up the chance to play in the UCL to join liverpool, the biggest club in England, but in some decline at the moment, having only qualified for the UEFA cup.
For Barry, giving up the chance to play in the UCL and joining a club with the potential to be the biggeest of them all and playing an integral part in it.

I, like you guys, think that liverpool is the end of all means... But hey, different strokes for different people(Like Barry) alrighty?

Erm....nope, not really. Never mind.

Barry's letter:

After all the speculation over the last 12 months, I want the chance to explain my decision to the Villa fans.

Firstly I want to thank them for the incredible support I have received over the last 12 years, this football club has been a huge part of my life, I joined as a 16-year-old boy and now I am moving on as a 28-year-old man with a wife and two children.

A lot of things have changed in that time, players, management and a chairman - but every season bar none, whether we have been bottom half, mid table or challenging for Europe, the support myself and the team have received has been fantastic.

My one huge regret is that during my time at this club we have not brought the fans the success they deserve. I obviously have to take my share of responsibility that we have not been good enough to win trophies.

I feel the club is in the best position it has been in during my time here, I think we have a group of very good young players, we have a fantastic chairman who is here for the good of the club and one of the best managers in the game.

Obviously people will ask why I am leaving if I feel like that.

I have honestly been very undecided what to do, the manager and the whole club have bent over backwards to try and persuade me to stay and made me a fantastic offer which I am extremely grateful for.

But, after changing my mind lots of times, I came to the decision that the time was right for me and for the club to part company. I need a new challenge, I have a massive fear of going stale and falling into a comfort zone.

I believe the deal is a good one for the club, I am sure the manager will use the money well to strengthen the team and the club will go from strength to strength.

I am also excited now about my new challenge, a lot of people will question my decision to join Manchester City, but they were the club prepared to meet the valuation, which for a 28-year-old with a year left on his contract I think shows how much they wanted me.

Once I had spoke to Mark Hughes there was nowhere else I wanted to go, I was also desperate to avoid any long drawn out saga.

I feel I am joining a club that will seriously challenge to win major honours. People might doubt that, but I am convinced with the plans the club has short term and long term.

The backing the manager will receive from the owners tells me that we will be a major force.

Also the World Cup next year has always been a major part of my thinking. I feel at Manchester City I will get the chance to play regularly in my best position and play a big part in a successful side.

Time will tell if I am right or not, but those are my reasons.

I have grown bored of all the speculation surrounding me over the last 12 months and I am sure all the fans have as well, I am glad I never left last summer because I would have left under a huge cloud.

This year I feel things are different, I haven't used an agent. I have discussed things with my best friend (agent Michael Standing) but ultimately made my own choices.

I believe the situation has been handled properly by everybody involved. Once again I have to thank the manager and the club for that.

I genuinely wish the club all the best for the future and want to thank everyone who has helped and supported me in my time here.

For the rest of my life Aston Villa will be the first result I look for.

Thanks for everything.

Gareth Barry.

Zero ambition.

You could argue he's shown a lot of ambition by taking a gamble that the world's richest club will break into the big time during his time there. After all, we've won nothing for three seasons now so coming to us to win trophies is no sure thing either. It will be much easier to judge when the transfer window is closed and we see who City have also signed. I think we should be a little worried by this.

You'd have a pretty weak argument on your hands. He's getting on a bit now, and it's a damn sight more likely that he would have won some serious silverware with either us or Arsenal than he will at Citeh. They may have a decent squad, but they don't have the right manager to take them past us or Arsenal, which is where he could have been playing.

Citeh have megabucks and will no doubt assemble a great squad over the coming seasons, but it's not as simple as that. They need the right manager to be able to make an immediate impact. Why go to Citeh and wait for CL footy and silverware etc when he could have come to us or gone to the Arse and had it all a damn sight quicker? Answer=££££££££££££
Did we bid for him this summer? Did Arsenal?
Do you know that we didn't? We were willing to pay a lot for him last season and i'm sure we may well have been tempted again. He's also just the sort of player Arsenal need and has been linked to them before. He didn't exactly hang about in joining Citeh, did he?
It would normally be reported (not least by City) if two of the Top 4 had been in for Barry and they'd signed him instead.

The point is you (and others) are slagging him off for joining City rather than us or Arsenal when you've got no idea whether he even had that option.

As for not hanging about, perhaps the speed of the transfer was one of its appeals (along with the money, natch) after the drawn-out mess that we and Villa made of it last summer.
I think it's pretty safe to assume that if Rafa was willing to blow £18 mill on Barry last year he would have happily blown £10 mill on him this year. The insider info the mods provided would appear to back that up too. But when his agent calls us and Arsenal up and says "hey boys, we have £12mill and £100k a week on the table from Citeh, any increase?", he's hardly going to be met with anything other than a laugh and a no.

The second Citeh were interested, his agent would have gone to them first. He gets a nice cut out of whatever deal he secures for Barry. So of course he'll go to them first and then see if anyone else is daft enough to pay those sorts of figures or more. Once he approaches us with those amounts, of course we won't be interested.

If he really wanted CL footy, I don't doubt for a second he could have had it with us or the Arse, but it would have meant taking a pay cut. Do you really think Rafa would not have taken Barry for £10 mill? I think he'd have taken him in a flash. Wenger too.
So both clubs would have taken him 'in a flash' at £10m, but not at £12m? Seems unlikely. And we wouldn't have to match his wages - once we'd matched City's transfer bid, it would have been up to the player and he'd have talked to all three clubs (a la Kewell). None of that happened, which suggests to me that we weren't really that interested.

The £10 mill figure is the one that Rafa and others probably would have had in mind before Citeh came in, so yeh they would have been interested. But at £12mill plus those ridiculous wages? No.

As Brendan has suggested, Citeh were probably in there like a flash with a huge offer. An offer nobody else would even consider matching.

This bit interests me. They were the only club to meet the valuation. Does that mean we have a small budget and cant afford him, or were we playing silly buggers again, start the bidding at £6m trying to negotiate thinking we have the player in the bag.

You're assuming we were still interested, which at £12M I highly doubt we were as he is never worth that.

So, it's been reported today that Benitez himself pulled the plug on the Barry transfer. We had a bid of 12 mill accpeted, but Barry wanted 100k a week, as City were offering him. And Rafa said no.

Good on him.

just shows that we can't compete with the new wage paradigm.

Barry's better off at City. I'd rather have players who recognize the honour of playing for Liverpool as opposed to looking for a pay packet that they're not worth.

This kinda blows a big gaping hole into the SCM Boardroom Inner Sactuary We know What's Going On Behind The Scenes And We're Gonna Give Rafa An Online Raping For It doesn't it?

What with Rafa repeating ad nauseum that he wants Alonso to stay, and Barry being chatted up by some Arabs at Citeh, it's not really been a good start to the summer for the boys.

Fire away...
That's totally unnecessary, obviously they're just going on what they've heard. And I, for one, appreciate it when people share information, and I'm guessing it's posts like this that make the mods reluctant to share.

Like with any 'insider info', you have to take it with a pinch of salt, it's not set in stone.
Pffft, fucking nonsense.

You make it out like it was some 'don't shoot the messenger' titibit of info that was passed on.

Was it fuck. Did you read the thread? Ross/Sheik and whomever else completely set the agenda, absolutely slaughtered Rafa for it, and had the temerity to harangue anyone who dared question it. I suggest you go back and re-read it.

If you're going to set you stall out like that, then you're gonna have to take it on the other side when it turns out your info is fucking rubbish. There's a difference between 'here's some news that could happen' and setting the agenda for the entire Forum.

They weren't naive enough to think this wouldn't be brought to their attention either, hence their ensuing silence.
You seem to be weally weally angwy so to make you calm down a bit, no-one set agendas (although you do seem to have one given this is the 2nd time you've had a pop at us over this) and no-one mentioned that they had any inside knowledge of Gareth Barry joining us (in fact no-one claims to have inside knowledge of anything). There was, however, mention of Alonso leaving and I think I’m right in saying I didn’t really have much input apart from saying that it might be because Alonso wants to leave and not that Rafa wants to get rid (massive agenda I set with that one eh!). The last time I looked, the transfer window hadn't shut. Hence the 'ensuing silence'. And you’re right, the information could be rubbish but it could also yet turn out to be correct. I hope Alonso doesn't leave for 'our' sake but while I normally couldn’t give a toss what people think about stuff I might have heard, in this instance a very tiny smidgeon within me hopes he does leave so I can shove your words and dickhead attitude on this one down your gob.

PS. Gareth Barry is a mercenary of the highest order.

...

I dont think the plea is to the board, more to Barry

does Gareth want to join City or does he want to join Liverpool and play with someone like Gerrard, one of the best players in the world? time for Gareth to speak. I really want to hear what he says, at the very least this move will force him to make a decision and end it one way or another!

Most of us aren't upset at that C&B, i imagine a lot will be pleased and will look forward to pointing and laughing at Barry next season.
As it stands, Barry's choice is Man City or Villa, he doesn't have a Liverpool option on the table to choose from. I would think Gerrard's message is directed at Liverpool to give him that option.
I bet Gareth agrees with you that he's had a lucky escape not joining Liverpool.
