If Rafa had any intention of selling Alonso he would have made a last minute bid for Barry, he clearly didn't as the transfer wouldn't have gone through so quicky if he had.

Anyway, Barry probably didn't know who he was signing for, he does seem to have his eyes shut most of the time.
But things change so quickly in football. Maybe Rafa did make a late bid and it was turned down. Maybe Xabi will be approached by Madrid and be excited by their rebuilding plan and ask for a transfer. Whatever transpired, I don't think it's a good start to the transfer window from our perspective since it shows City maybe getting a bit smarter about who they go for - and those targets could well be the ones at our level instead of the Kaka's and Messi's of last January...

Barry could have bought himself out from his contract last season but didn´t.
Now he wanted Champions league football but signed for man c.
Idiot.

He's fucked himself over.

Zero ambition.

You could argue he's shown a lot of ambition by taking a gamble that the world's richest club will break into the big time during his time there. After all, we've won nothing for three seasons now so coming to us to win trophies is no sure thing either. It will be much easier to judge when the transfer window is closed and we see who City have also signed. I think we should be a little worried by this.
Why? It's not like City were in the position Chelsea were in when Abramovich came in. They had a solid foundation of a good team and were experiencing some success already. City are nowhere near that. Nor do they have the attraction of London. Unless they're able to sign some major players, which I doubt (Kaka being an example) then they'll end up no better than City. They have players now who should be performing above what they did last season but they didn't. They don't worry me at all for next season.

You might have been able to say City were smart to sign Bridge, but all I've heard since is how fucking rubbish he is. City will build a good team, but I see no reason to hit the panic button just yet.

A good team maybe. An excellent team is well debatable. They're years off where they need to be.

I said they could hit the big time in the time Barry will be there rather than it being next season. It only takes a week to change a manager and that could catapult them above Arsenal for starters if the right person comes along.

I agree it doesn't feel like City are a true threat at the top end of the PL table, but we'd be deluded to think it couldn't happen given their resources. Admittedly it's tougher now at the top than when Chelsea went all Roman, not least because we are much better than back in 2003, but it simply can't be ruled out that Man City can muscle their way into the Top 4.

Then we best be worried about Portsmouth as well then. Fuck worrying about other teams, especially those who think a sugar-daddy will bring them success. I'm only going to worry about our team, who we buy and what we do. We're on the cusp of a great team ourselves.

Unless he's got other possible targets lined up as Xabi's replacement
Well, if his main motivation for selling Alonso was financial gain, then an adequate replacement other than Barry surely wouldn't make it worthwile.
Javi Martinez has been mentioned at around £10m

Once again though you are ignoring the fact that Xabi might actually want to go (and force Rafa's hand).
maybe the way rafa behaved he's the one that has forced alonso's hand?
It's all down to Xabi now. He knows that he's wanted by the fans and Rafa, so lets just wait and see how committed he his.

i don't know, if some bitch tried to dump me for another bloke only for it not to work out and then decided to keep hold of me i'd not be looking to stay. would u?

No mate. Not a chance.

If Xabi wants to go, dispite being reassured that Rafa wants him to stay, it's no longer on Rafa. Xabi's a highly paid professional, who knows the business that he's in... If he can't put last summer behind him, then it's his fault, not Rafa's.

Honestly, mate - You make R4PM look middle of the road.

Even "If" he does have a problem with Rafa, I guess it all depends on how much he loves the fans and the club then.

Like i said it's over to Xabi now.

no, i just don't think its easy to leave things in the past thats all. xabi was clearly hurt by what rafa did last year. maybe he's a better man than most people i know but i think that had rafa not behaved the way he did last summer then after the season he's just had xabi would no way be handing in a transfer request

if i was alonso i'd be thinking whats to stop rafa from changing his mind again next summer? maybe this is opportunity for a new start and next year the only clubs interested in me will be in some backwater in turkey like the one rafa tried to sell me to.

rafa's man management has a lot to answer for if we lose alonso. i just hope that now he's in charge of transfers we get over 30 million for him

City have a image problem, players wont go there, unless you are average players like Barry. Our Midfield maestro stays, Alonso, Alonso, Alonso.

This kinda blows a big gaping hole into the SCM Boardroom Inner Sactuary We know What's Going On Behind The Scenes And We're Gonna Give Rafa An Online Raping For It doesn't it?

What with Rafa repeating ad nauseum that he wants Alonso to stay, and Barry being chatted up by some Arabs at Citeh, it's not really been a good start to the summer for the boys.

Fire away...
That's totally unnecessary, obviously they're just going on what they've heard. And I, for one, appreciate it when people share information, and I'm guessing it's posts like this that make the mods reluctant to share.

Like with any 'insider info', you have to take it with a pinch of salt, it's not set in stone.
Pffft, fucking nonsense.

You make it out like it was some 'don't shoot the messenger' titibit of info that was passed on.

Was it fuck. Did you read the thread? Ross/Sheik and whomever else completely set the agenda, absolutely slaughtered Rafa for it, and had the temerity to harangue anyone who dared question it. I suggest you go back and re-read it.

If you're going to set you stall out like that, then you're gonna have to take it on the other side when it turns out your info is fucking rubbish. There's a difference between 'here's some news that could happen' and setting the agenda for the entire Forum.

They weren't naive enough to think this wouldn't be brought to their attention either, hence their ensuing silence.

It does indeed. Money grabbing bastard.

No European footy & nothing (or very little) to show the grand kids when you're older, or the genuine chance of the biggest trophies you can win in club football.

Not a good move.

£130k a week ? For Gareth Barry ?? Hahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaa. City are so fucking desperate.

As I said earlier in the thread, what are todays footballers REALLY interested in ?

If football doesn't watch it, we'll end up with NHL style unsustainable contracts. Many footballers will rightly wonder why exactly he is getting more than them, given that he's not a great player.

Anyway, wow. That's almost twice what anyone else would have paid him, and he'll see out his career making that much.

I can't wait for his letter to the Aston Villa fans

Dear Fans,

I leave Villa with a heavy heart - had we qualified for the Champions league, I probably would have stayed and helped the team reach the next level. However, when that offer came in from Man City, I couldn't turn it down. Idiot you say? Well, you may have a point. Ok, you're probably right. I went for the money. Oh well, can you blame me? 130k a week!

Well at least if that was his letter he'd be honest. I'd love to see a " You know what? I did it for the money" admission.

You'd have a pretty weak argument on your hands. He's getting on a bit now, and it's a damn sight more likely that he would have won some serious silverware with either us or Arsenal than he will at Citeh. They may have a decent squad, but they don't have the right manager to take them past us or Arsenal, which is where he could have been playing.

Citeh have megabucks and will no doubt assemble a great squad over the coming seasons, but it's not as simple as that. They need the right manager to be able to make an immediate impact. Why go to Citeh and wait for CL footy and silverware etc when he could have come to us or gone to the Arse and had it all a damn sight quicker? Answer=££££££££££££

Do you know that we didn't? We were willing to pay a lot for him last season and i'm sure we may well have been tempted again. He's also just the sort of player Arsenal need and has been linked to them before. He didn't exactly hang about in joining Citeh, did he?

Fair play to City for tying up this deal quickly.

I'm a little bit disappointed, to be honest, because if Xabi were to force his way out I felt Barry would be a good replacement and now we're left with less options.

As for Barry, he should've waited until he knew Arsenal & Liverpool weren't interested in him, because now he looks greedy and a liar.

It would normally be reported (not least by City) if two of the Top 4 had been in for Barry and they'd signed him instead.

The point is you (and others) are slagging him off for joining City rather than us or Arsenal when you've got no idea whether he even had that option.

As for not hanging about, perhaps the speed of the transfer was one of its appeals (along with the money, natch) after the drawn-out mess that we and Villa made of it last summer.

It's hardly inconceivable that his agent contacted the two clubs when the City offer came in and was told that we weren't interested at that price.
