This this is the Fifa law proving the red card was wrong on two counts. Ball was clearly going wide. #afc #cfc pic.twitter.com/DARG5TiATz

arsenal are so shite i actually fancy torres to get a birthday goal .

Doesnt make a difference if we win all our games. We need to not give them their way in.

Also, we need to hope they get through in the CL, so they play us inbetween cl games.

i do believe it's good to have a certain amount of "lets concentrate on ourselves and not worry too much about them" . but you also need to be sensible and play a "professional" game at times , wenger comes across as too stubborn in that regard .

Yea a bit of that and having a footballing philosophy that you want to stick to is fine but he is definitely to stubborn with it. He only has to abandon his tippy tappy ideals for a handful of games.

hmm i didn't realise how relatively easy chelsea's fixtures are apart from us . Guess the hope is the champs league distracts them while also taking a bashing from us.

Yep, the CL thing could be big for us. It'd be like 3 days either side.

Personally I think they'll draw another game somewhere, though. Not on paper, but there's always a surprise, and against a proper football team they often find it tough to create chances.

Eto being out won't help them one bit, cos this game aside they've struggled to score many.

We've no need to fear playing them. You're right, we can't slip up, they are too consistent for that.

Chelsea need another 6 to make up the goal difference. Bearing in mind they have to get beat by us too.

Plus we have the games in hand to win, which obv increases our GD.

Btw just realised that if we beat them we'd go 2 pts ahead, meaning that we could draw a game and still afford for them to win all theirs, cos we'd be ahead on goal difference. So that's something.

Marriner has admitted to his mistake.

did he actually give the pen himself or after someone said something in his ear ? I thought it was the latter which may explain getting the wrong guy too . But it says something about the level of respect between refs and players that he wouldn't even listen to them .

According to the hosts here Marriner gave a corner but the linesman awarded a penalty. I assume the linesman also told him who to send off.

Hmmm after all those mistakes Arsene and Arsenal already made today it is a bit pathetic to focus on Marriners one.

Oh totally agree. Arsenal didnt show up once again in the first 20 mins and they should be down to 10 men regardless.

Strange he didn't start Flamini.

But remember, that advice is not actually allowed by the letter of the law, so he can't say that it was anyone else who advised him.

So what should he say... "I incidently scratched my ear while i concidered if I should award that penalty. After all it was a doubtful one...." ?

Ha. They just do it & never talk about it. They've actually denied it before despite cameras showing the assistant reviewing the monitor & talking to him!

It shouldn't be used & Fifa/Uefa won't sanction it so they do it & pretend they don't, & fifa/Uefa pretend they don't know.

It's like the brown bag for alcohol 'rule' in the US.

Wait, that's if the advice comes from the fourth official right? If it's the linesman, then it's legit. That's why refs always consult their lino in times of difficulty, e.g. when they're unsighted. And players are always urging them to check with their colleague and they also openly oblige.

True, I was assuming the delay was the fourth official checking, otherwise if it's the lino then there should have been no real delay.

Is this correct?

I know the ref has to make the final decision, but the linesman can advise surely? When they put the flag across their chest that signifies "i think that was a penalty" or "that foul happened in the area", which is surely "advising the ref". If it wasn't allowed why is there an official indication like that?

(Maybe you are referring to the fourth official, but DHSC's post that you replied to said "the linesman")
