Hmmmm, some positive tonight, an awful lot of negatives though.
I suppose the limitations of consistently playing football for the reserves shone though tonight. You just can't afford to give the ball away as much as he did tonight at the highest level. For the reserves, fine, some clogger will win it back in seconds, against good sides in the Champions League if you're unable to retain possession when it's pinged up to you that's a fucking problem.
His movement in the box is good, his eagerness welcoming, but he's raw as fuck, and just not a good enough replacement for an injured Torres. He'll get the odd goal, but we were shit as a team with him in there tonight. He's got a lot to learn before he's ready to start games regularly at this level. If we weren't so short on options, it'd improve his development to go out on loan.

Yes he is still learning his trade, it was a big ask of him to lead line in champions league, I stll think he has something if nurtured.

In a game where players were taking the safe option, be it longer balls or not making runs, he was prepared to take the ball in a one on one/two situation and make a go at turning them. Others didnt have faith in their team mates and instead held their positon because they were afraid of the move breaking down and getting caught out of position rather than forcing Lyon to track our runs and give our players a few runs to hit.
Perhaps thats a symptom of a bad patch on top of Gerrard and Torres being out.
Anyway, its no stick to beat Ngog with.

I think he'd look good in the Championship. He's several years away from being a genuine CL/PL performer though.
I would guess there is at least one striker at every other team in the PL that I'd prefer as a squad option to Wash.

You don't buy young players - particularly ones like N'Gog - for the now, they're for the future. For all the hype around guys like Macheda and Vela, you're not going to see Ferguson or Wenger asking them to lead the line in key CL ties.
The fact that N'Gog is the only replacement to Torres in the entire squad is not his fault. It's also not his fault that whenever he's been given a real chance in a meaningful game, it's been in a makeshift (and largely rubbish) team that has struggled. We could've had the great French hope Benzema up front last night and made him look fucking dreadful.

If it makes you feel any better Keni, Benzema has been very average, if not below average, for Real too - unlike the guy he's essentially replaced, Higuain.

At least he's improved his ability to chest the ball down. That's one thing, at least, he's clearly worked on. (One clings to such modest things!) He still has the quite bizarre habit of reaching out with his hand when a ball flies past him like a kitten spotting a stray piece of string. He did it again last night for no reason at all. I just don't know what to make of him at this stage - except that he certainly doesn't seem ready to start a first team game.

struggled to get the ball maybe but when presented with a gilt edged chance you'd expect a better player to put the chance away. we seriously had lyon on the ropes in the closing stages of the first half and we let them off the hook.
If you're relying on 4 minute spells at the end of the first half to win games, you know things aren't going well.
To say we had them on the ropes is a little ridiculous. N'Gog had one chance that I can recall during that period, which wasn't a total sitter as it came at him quickly. He got his shot off and the keeper saved it. Whatchagonnado.
