Massive game for the lad tonight.

We're on an awful run of results (and performances) going into a game we can barely afford to lose anyway if we want to get out of the group - a minimum requirement for us. He's been on the periphery of the team of late yet looking eager and lively when making sub appearances, so building on some useful cameo performances for us last year. With Torres out, probably not for the last time this season, he's got real chance to shine tonight.

One thing that's always struck me about his brief performance is that he seems to go up a notch or two once he's scored in a game, suggesting he thrives on confidence. If he plays well tonight and contributes to a good allround team performance and result, this could be the springboard for him to really believe he has a role to play for us as Torres back-up (or potential strike partner). And with Gerrard behind him tonight he's every chance of being able to use his pace and finishing ability to get on the end of some decent chances.

Tonight, whilst not being the making of him, could certainly mark his arrival as a genuine option for us.

He or Voronin deserve a go, whatever everyone's feelings are about them, particularly N'Gog.

I'm sure many will argue that Kuyt and/or Babel are better players but Kuyt struggles upfront on his own because of a lack of pace and Babel, well N'Gog is like the complete opposite. One has bags of potential and consistently falls short, the other demands rather low expectation yet often exceeds it through sheer effort, not letting his head drop and a tendency to be in the right place at the right time infront of goal, like a proper striker.

Benny and Kuyt and Stevie are our 3 most likely to score tonight.
They are, but that doesn't Kuyt should play upfront on his own.

By the look of the line-up that mark posted in the team thread, Ngog will up on his own again tonight. I don't think that's a good idea. I'd much rather see him partnered with Kuyt in a 4-4-2.

The likes of Gerrard, Yossi and Kuyt are really gonna have to be quick to support him, otherwise he may find himself marked out of the game.

I think rafa will try and rest who he can tonight and hope for at worst a point, we need to beat the mancs on saturday or our premiership is more or less completely over, we can still lose tonight and qualify if we hit form, more difficult obviously but....

I'd be really surprised (and pissed off) if he takes that attitude, he's said himself that the best way to get back into form is to play again a couple of days later.

I wouldn't worry, Mark. When was the last time Rafa rested *anyone* for an important CL match?

Heh, true.... And he shouldn't, it's October FFS and they're all ultra-fit athletes. Pfff...

I wish him all the best if he is on own up front...Bon Chance N'Gog!

I hope he has good game, he led the line well against Leeds I thought, but Lyon will be different kettle of fish, of course.

It would be nice for a young man like him to break through this year and step up, we really need a bit of a boost like that.

I wonder where the next Fowler or Owen is in the coming through the ranks? It was great feeling when they broke into the team! Remember Fowlers 5 against Fulham or Owens phenomenal pace against Celtic it was exciting!

Or did you mean ultra-fat?

if he starts then he deserves to because Babel is pathetic so it wouldnt be a bad decision like Vlad I think Pacheco should also get a shot at some stage because the squad is so shocking it can't hurt can it? and we have to think about the future and what kind of style of play we're trying to achieve and at the moment it's awful .

agree with you the players need to know a distinct style of play brand of football most teams have it. we are to unpredictable no one knows which Liverpool will show up brilliant then shit then average then poor then piss poor then magic .we maybe brilliant today against Lyon and on Sunday we wont know which liverpool display will turn up

I like Wash. He's not some unstoppable talent, no, but there is potential there.
Seconded.

Hope he goes 'goals galore' tonight.

i think there is enough potential there to elevate him above both Babel and Voronin in the pecking order.

He blew 2 great chances, but at least he got in those positions i guess.

In regards to how he held the ball up, I don't think it helped that most of the "passes" played up to him were around shoulder height.

PLEASE LOSE THE MARK LAWRENSON NICKNAME FOR HIM, PLEEEEAAAASSEEE

I like him purely because he has confidence. When others take the ball in and lay off or dont gamble, he is more than prepared to take a player on and showed a lovely piece of skill in their box.

Shame he played in a team tonight that only looked threatening for 10 mins in the 1st half and perhaps 5mins in the 2nd half

In a game where players were taking the safe option, be it longer balls or not making runs, he was prepared to take the ball in a one on one/two situation and make a go at turning them. Others didnt have faith in their team mates and instead held their positon because they were afraid of the move breaking down and getting caught out of position rather than forcing Lyon to track our runs and give our players a few runs to hit.

Perhaps thats a symptom of a bad patch on top of Gerrard and Torres being out.

Anyway, its no stick to beat Ngog with.
