After reading ILDs comment in the post match thread, I wanted to start a thread about this.
What can be done? The referees clearly have no idea and its shite to watch. The rythem of the game gets fucked up and there are in certain games probably wasted 15 mins on throw ins, goal kicks, subs , corners and free kicks.
I'd love some new rules on this or playing effective time or whatever its called in icehockey and basketball.
Get rid of injury time and play 90 effective minutes. Stop the clock when the ball is not in play.
If thats impossible to implement then I'd love it if refs booked players more and actually added all the time wasted up in the end.

Is it just a part of the game we have to live with? Or can someyhing be done?

Play 75 minutes and stop the clock when the ref whistles or the ball is out of play - sorted.

I just don't think its that much of a big deal. We drew, feels like a loss but hey can't blame time wasting.

Its got nothing to do with the draw today in terms of looking for excuses. That game was just another example of a shit problem thats increasing.

Stoke, when they were still stable, were maddening at it. There are a few sides who are shocking at how much they do it. Refs see it but just put up with it until even their patience is finished, then they give one yellow and it starts all over again. They need to jump on it quickly and make it clear it'll end in a red card if it isn't cut out.

Stoke, when playing away, are probably the worst team around. Worst thing it starts already with the first goal kick aswell. Give an early yellow and set an example.
If the players dont hurry up give another.

The arm gesture some of the refs use is just annoying. "Ah come on now. You've already used 30 secs, come on come on".

Time wasting is shit to watch but the club can't be that bothered about speeding things up if they don't even have ball boys. We should have them bowling a/the ball back on the pitch immediately.

Yeah, I was thinking about that today actually. We always spend uneccessary time chasing our own throw ins aswell. Get some some ballboys in ffs

If the referee did his job properly and booked the first instance of it and keeps doing it then it would soon stop. Instead they wait until 5 minutes before the match ends before dishing out the first yellow as if to say "Hey, I did something about it." What difference does it make if it's the 1st or 90th minute?

We are brginning to all sound like Arsenal supporters.
We simply weren't good enough to beat a classic big Sam set up.
Shame on us.

I'm not blaming the time wasting for the result mate. We simply weren't good enough but it's infuriating, especially when you've paid a fair wedge of dough to watch a gang of shithouses blatantly take the piss. Can I have a refund for the inaction? One minute of added on time in the first half was laughable.

I don't blame west ham, stoke or anyone who does it. A point away at Anfield is a great result and you do everything you can to get that.

If the shoe was on the other foot and we were holding on for a win then I am sure we are capable of a bit of timewasting.
Not in the same league as West Ham today I will grant you but "professionl" behavior all the same.
As frustrating as it is when you are chasing a result giving out about it, as some are, sounds so very.......
Arsenal.

Time wasting 5 minutes from time to hold on to a win or draw yeah, not from the beginning of the match. As I say, I don't blame them for doing it but the refs have to show some bollocks and book people or add the right amount of time on.

That I agree with.

Yes, and that was my point aswell. Its not just about teams coming to Anfield, its football general.

Yes. Score a goal.

Yeah, I don't think it's that much of a problem either.

It's a little frustrating to watch as a spectator but it's probably way down on the list of things that need addressing.

Let's deal with the rampant corruption and cronyism first.

I think it's a problem that could be sorted instantly at professional level, and quite as easily at amateur level.
Just make the clock stop when the ball's out of bounds or between free kicks etc.
Done in many other sports so I can't see the problem.
Time wasting during the passage of play is one thing, and is absolutely fine (like dribbling to the corner and blocking a couple of players off).
But taking a stupid amount of time taking free kicks and goal kicks, or kicking the ball or chucking it away before taking throwins makes the game boring, and that's talking from a neutral perspective.

It's not even supposed to be part of the game, thus the half-arsed added time and bookings when such things occur. But how should a referee interpret time wasting? There's no official time limit given to any situations like it. So if a player is simply generally slow at doing one thing without any malicious thoughts, should he be booked? No.
You can say the same thing for fouls and bookings, but that's just part of the game where a referee has to use his intuition. But with time wasting the solution is simple. Simply press 'pause' on the stop watch. For top pro leagues the referee doesn't even need a watch. That could be done by the fourth official.

Yes there are other things in the sport that can or should be looked at with a matter of more priority, but why not fix something negative when it seems so simple to be able to do so?

Dismissing it out of hand is just naive. These things never seem to matter until you suddenly think they matter. There will be a game in the future where it will enrage those who now affect a couldn't give a toss attitude. It's also just disingenuous to suggest it's perfectly acceptable to see a team start time wasting as early as the 50th minute, absolutely ruin a game and turn it into a crushing bore, when the ref does nothing.

Ref's should stamp out time wasting and taking action on the culprits. WHU got away with murder.

Like when we went to Barca under Houllier back in the day and all we could do was try to speed things up.

Pfft.
