Tiago Ilori

We'll have to play Big Bad Bogdan at CB in this injury crisis continues.

If we didn't at least try to get the loan terminated, with us having zero centre backs & them having one of ours who they don't seem to want, I'd be amazed.

I'm guessing they'll just want most of their million quid loan fee back & we'll pay it cos it's cheaper than sourcing another centre back of similar standard.

... and the legend of Ilori will grow henceforth ...

Tiago Ilori’s 12 month loan has been cancelled by Aston Villa and he could go into the squad for Friday’s FA Cup visit to Exeter *Mirror*

Well, I suppose if he comes back, there's a chance he'll finally get a game for the reserves.

Just posted this in Exeter thread, but probably belongs here:

Could Illori be converted into a decent DM? He was good with the ball at his feet, covered pretty well for Enrique and the FBs. Not strong enough for a Premier League CB, but very quick and seems to read the game fairly well.

Thoughts?

I like your thinking, and we can move Benteke to CB.

I mentioned this a few days ago.

I think he's worth a shot there.

I'd rather just sign a decent DM that already knows the position.

I thought the same thing during the game. I doubt Ilori will be good enough to solve our DM problems, but he might get his career going elsewhere if he switches to this position. He didn't do too bad against Exeter, but there were a couple of instances of him losing position and that's against 2nd division opponents.

I wouldn't play him against arsenal or utd if poss but he looks alright. With games I don't see why he can't improve

I think the main valid observations that we can take from the Exeter game are that: (a) he didn't look good at dealing with aerial balls, and (b) he looks like he could do with bulking up more in the upper body to take some hits. The other parts of the game like positioning and reading of the game probably need to be assessed over more minutes of play because of a couple of possibly mitigating factors - lack of playing time, unfamiliarity with the team and system, and that he wasn't helped by having Randall and Enrique being defensively negligent (Randall) or absolutely snail-like (Enrique) on either side of him. Enrique looks like he's aged terribly in the period he's been out - his legs are gone and he looked constipated all game. He looked slower than Toure, and that's some accomplishment.

As for converting Ilori into a DM - erm, let's just see him play at CB again before drawing that conclusion. What's with this weird fetish to want to to kick an unimpressive CB into the DM position? Is strength, positioning and reading of the game not as important a rank further up?

Hope to see him in the replay, this time with Toure beside him as a CB partner - at least that's a senior player who is playing in his position and looks happy to pull on the shirt. Hopefully, Flanagan might be able to play some minutes by then, and we can use the game to bed him in and play about 30 to 45 minutes.

he looked absolutely destroyed in the second half, he'll need to work on that

That was always likely to happen given he hasnt started a game since last season. His fitness should come back pretty quickly as hes still young

He could form a great CM / DM partnership with Sakho

How can a centre half get cramp, the lazy bollox.

*disclaimer, not counting extra time etc.

Meanwhile, the always-classy Villa fans are apparently slaughtering Ilori's performance yesterday. They're aghast that they paid a loan fee to us but never played him, and are now snickering that this game showed why Garde was right in not playing him ahead of their useless CBs who've shipped the second most goals in the league this season. I don't know why they even care anymore since they agreed to cancel the loan, avoided paying 6m to 8m for him at the end of the season, and may have even got a refund of the loan fee.

I'm so glad that Newcastle, Sunderland and Villa are all going down this season. It's a pity we couldn't squeeze West Brom in there too.

Why do you care what the Villa fans think?
