The Magic that is Continio

A measured amount of criticism, like "he gives the ball away at times". that I can understand.
However, comparing him to world class players in order to say that he isn't scoring enough or isn't good enough that is something I have an issue with.

How can someone say something like "shit happens when Lallana is on the pitch" and then complain about Coutinho?

How can someone be dick riding Borini, pardon my french, and criticise Coutinho?

I don't get any sense you've read anyone on here regularly about the player over a length of time.

When? The criticism and the comment Modo quoted wasn't from months ago, it was from a month ago, or more accurately, a couple of days before Coutinho set up two against West Ham. Lallana is great, I really am a big fan, but he wasn't our "most creative player", he's got three assists to his name this season. If anything, our most creative player this season has been Henderson, in terms of chances created and assists, he well outweighs both Lallana and Coutinho.

It's a daft debate, he's playing well, we all know he has the ability to be top drawer, he's not far off it, some of the criticisms have been well over board, which is why people have reacted the way they have. People don't have a problem with posters saying he can improve on this and that, that's fair game. The frustration stems from the initial comments made and the fact he's been inaccurately compared to other top players, when he actually compares favorably to many of them statistically anyway (a point ignored), and the notion that Lallana is the more creative player, who scores and creates goals. Coutinho out does him on both counts this season. Statistically over the last three years they have a similar record - Coutinho wins on assists and Lallana wins on goals, it's much of a muchness with not alot in it, but as said (and ignored/ridiculed), Coutinho is 22, Lallana is so-called "peak age".
I thought that criticism was from pre December, whereas the "all he does is turn people on half way line" was pre West ham.

It's much of a muchness as they both contribute a lot. Coutinho is clearly a much better player with a ceiling I haven't seen in a player before.

As I've always maintained, comparing him to "top" players is one thing, but I've repeatedly said this lad could be a top 5 in the world player. I'd hope he'd be better than silva etc when they were his age.

I've also said comparing him to different players is fruitless, because he's a completely different beast to the players he was likened to

That's very unfair. Even when playing badly, he rarely hides.

Which suggests he did sometimes hide. I never did say he hid, but there several perfectly justified criticisms of his past form that were made, and he's now learnt from them. I think this weird WUM - 'Sherman' (who's already tanked) - needs swerving before it becomes a bit of a bore.

Or even lambast someone like Rodgers and idolize Rafa?

Just ignore him, he's Modo who's a crin

His passing was all over the place but he never hid in that he never wanted the ball or took up positions where he couldn't receive it.

Coutinho always wants the ball even if he constantly gets kicked up into the air. It's what he does once he has the ball which can be a source of frustration. And sometimes still is.

I prefer it when you praise Cuteinho without slagging off Lallana.

(Bagsy Cuteinho )

I have never said that I think that Lallana is a poor player. He's just someone who arrived with huge expectations, imo.
He's the only player I can compare him to, considering the role he has.

We just beat Man City and here we are arguing about something someone may have said or did not say ?

What's a crin?

OK, I'll call your Aqua and raise you a Stewie. That's 2-1 Modo, I mean Sherman...

You were recommending we sign Scott Sinclair and Taraabt at various times and thought Henderson was shit that's -3 on your score

Anyways, great game. I really do worry though that teams are starting to look at him and think he has that ability to play for one of the top European sides, it won't be long before we're seeing speculation. At least he's signed that new contract.

Him and Sterling can be a brilliant partnership for years to come, what we lost in Suarez, we may actually gain in the long run with these lads and likes of Ibe, Sturridge etc proving to be the sum of their parts.

It's such a great, exciting young team.

Lallana and Coutinho were both brilliant today, as was Joe Allen. I loved the comfort in possession those 3 show.

And the ability to turn a full 360 away from players with ease, the three of them were indeed brilliant today. Ably supported by Hendo's tireless running and closing, great performance. The only blot for me was Markovic again.

I can't be arsed to go through the whole thread so apologies if I'm quiffing but has Coutinho learnt English yet? I'm not sure if I've seen a post match interview with the little magician (as was the case today even though he was motm) Just wondering. Cheers.

Yea it's great to see them know when to turn and not panic when given the ball. Agree with you on Lazar, he has had a few decent performances but I don't see him having the same level of skill the others in his preferred position have, plus he's dead lightweight at times. Early days though.

From what I've read, he can speak basic English but he's just not confident enough to be on camera speaking English.
Some people just have a difficult time learning a new language especially a language that isn't on the same branch as spanish and portguese, in his case.
