I'm in the Kelly did ok and was unfortunate for the goal brigade.

He was coping okay at RB against one of the best attacks in Europe

Reina 5.5 - did ok, but he's not the commanding, decisive keeper he used to be. lack of communication with his defenders for both goals we conceded has to be questioned.

Kelly 5.5 - started the game brilliantly and was much improved overall but his limitations came to the fore again.

Coates 7 - thought he was really solid. can knock off at times but he's a strong lad and very composed on the ball. fine game

Skrtel 6.5 - beast of a game up until the mistake which was a bad one. cracking goal and he'll bounce back.

Johnson 7 - i'm not his biggest fan but he did well today. ran his socks off down the left to support young Sterling.

Gerrard 5.5 - better than last week, more discipined and more involved. his wayward passing was disappointing tho.

Lucas - n/a

Allen 8 - great display. rarely wasted a ball and wasn't afraid to get stuck in. top player in the making if he isn't already.

Sterling 7.5 - looks a threat every time he gets the ball, he's a flying machine. such a mature performance for someone so young and it was great to see him tracking back and helping the defence too.

Borini 5.5 - he takes up clever positions and is a willing runner but his decision making can let him down. still it's early days so hopefully he'll sharpen up, no doubting his work-rate anyway.

Suarez 5.5 - world class free-kick but not one of his best days.

Subs:

Shelvey 7 - did really well. clearly has loads of confidence in his own ability, always wants the ball and isn't afraid of trying the spectacular. promising display.

Carroll - n/a

Gary did you actually watch Suarez yesterday? His workrate was phenomenal. 5.5 is an insult to him.

I don't think Kelly was that bad and I also think reina is just as much to blame on the first goal.

On a plus point, Allen was fucking superb, and although I don't like shelvey, I thought he had a great game.

I thought Kelly wasn't that good yesterday. A few misplaced passes and short of confidence it looked like. Shelvey's not impressing me that much either at the moment. I don't see the fascination with him as a player. He has a lot to do. Allen looks well tidy though, yeh.

Reina - 6 some indecision on his part when coming for crosses, could have cost us big time

Coates - 7 Read the game well, promising
Skrtel - 6.5 As said, probably would have been a MOTM contender but for the howler, you don't play a blind pass, basic stuff.
Kelly - 6 Played ok early on, should have put his boot through it for the goal & was lucky not to score an OG when Tevez hit the post.
Johnson - 7 Great display, attacked well and linked up well with his team mates.

Lucas - n/a
Allen - 8 Excellent, I think he's going to be a firm favourite for a longtime.
Gerrard - 6 I don't get the backing he's got on here, thought he was out the game for most of the first half, he put that brilliant ball in though which nearly caught out Hart.

Suarez - 7.5 Industrious, menacing and scored a tremendous goal
Sterling - 7.5 Another big performance from the tiny lad, gave Toure a torrid time and his touch was excellent throughout.
Borini - 6.5 Great movement, just looks like he needs a goal to calm himself down. Some neat inside passes for Suarez in the second half.

Shelvey - 7.5 Another fabulous display, kept it simple but played some great passes over the top too, unlucky with his left foot shot.
Carroll - 6.5 Put himself about and was unlucky with the header.
Enrique - n/a I wish he'd stop doing that stupid fucking pirouette thing he does.

Even Allen's headers found a team mate. Some of the headers from our defenders and midfielders were done without any thought on where to head. It was just 'head it anywhere'. I understand that they could be under pressure but when you're not, try to head it to a team mate please.

This drives me mad to be honest, and it happened a few times yesterday. How hard is it to just bring the ball down when you have time or 10 yds, instead of gifting it back to the opposition. Some playrs do it superbly - everyone should be taught how to do it.

Peter Schmeichel was on one of those sky sports programs where they review the weekends matches and his opinion was that the goal was as much Reinas fault as it was Kellys. I know he's a scum legend but I would be inclined to listen to his opinion on goalkeeping. This is roughly what was said:

Reina - came out of his goal needlessly into an area where the centerbacks were capable of dealing with the cross, if he does come out he has to be certain of getting the ball. Flapped.

Kelly - looked like he was lining up to hoof the ball clear but Skrtels flick moved the ball slightly so it came to Kellys thigh instead of the foot as he was expecting. Unlucky.

Kelly was unlucky for huge goal but it was still a worrying performance. I like him a lot though so I hope he can improve. V

Spot on about Kelly.
I thought he was playing very well before that mistake which I thought was very unlucky.

Kelly had nothing to do with that goal really. Pepe flapped at it and it hit Kelly before he knew what was going on. Harsh in the extreme to blame him for that. 100% goalkeeping error for me. If he comes he must get there and call to his CBs accordingly. Skrtel obviously didn't know Pepe was coming.

Agree on Kelly. It was the poor passing that he got hauled off for yesterday.

Can't agree about Jonjo though. I may not be in the fascinated camp, but he played really well.

I felt it was because Tevez was schooling Sterling when the youngster was covering for Johnson. Balotelli earned a cheap free kick from Sterling at the death of the first half, and then Tevez beat Sterling twice in quick succession in the second - the second time leading to the goal. I thought Rodgers saw that and decided to bring in a natural left back to shore up that spot and switch Johnson back to the right instead.

That's what I thought too.

I'm not doubting Suarez' work-rate mate, he ran his socks off as he always does and tbf, he was isolated quite a bit.

I just thought his touch wasn't as good as usual, and he was pretty sloppy when he was on the ball.

He's a class player, but i just thought he wasn't at the races yesterday. Apart from that wonderful free-kick obviously 😀

My biggest worry about Reina isn't the flapping, which he has done from time to time since he came to LFC, but his distribution. He used to spray balls around like Alonso, and that along with his speed off his line was what made him a special keeper. Now he just seems to go for the hopeful punt like most goalies.

Reina: 6 Looked great at the beginning of the match; got in behind the first shot and picked it off beautifully. Thought he would be commanding after that but flapped for the first goal. I thought his distribution was ok - not as good as it was a few years ago but better than recently.

Coates: 6.5 I know it was a big game for him and lets be positive; he played well but got caught in possession once or twice which you just don't do as a CB. Otherwise I thought he was really good and kept Tevez under control whenever the Argentine came over his side of the pitch. He can learn a bit from others on the passing front, though.

Skrtel: 6 Was an absolute monster until that back pass; looked as desperate for a hole in the ground as any player I've seen in years. He cleaned up at the back, gave Balotelli a torrid time (despite a couple of fouls) and largely stopped Tevez with one exception. That back cost the game and him 2 points.

Kelly: 7 I thought he was very good until the goal; I know it looked like his fault and Rodgers probably thought the same but I just think it was unfortunate. Expected Reina to get it, didn't expect Skrtel to flick it all added up to him ruining it. Otherwise his running was great, passing pretty good and effort A+.

Johnson: 7.5 Showed he's a class player; gave Sterling an exceptional amount of support and confidence - looked calm and assured for most of the match.

Lucas: ? Gutted

Allen: 8 Loved his performance almost as much for the fact he could have gone un noticed; did everything with a minimum of fuss, found the player about 99% of the time and just looked assured.

Gerrard: 7.5 Don't get the lack of support on here; great corner for Skrtel, nearly caught Hart out with the ball for Borini, ran his socks off, tackled well, hit some glorious passes (and a couple of poor ones) and looked to shoot from outside the area for the first time in ages. Perhaps best of all he didn't try to do everything but supported Allen and, particularly, Raheem - showed confidence in them. Long term it was a highlight of the match.

Suarez: 7.5 What do you say? He runs as hard as anyone, turns with the ball as well as anyone I've ever seen, creates loads, misses loads and scores an absolute pearler.

Sterling: 7 Great performance from the youngster; looks confident which was so important. Benefited from Gerrard showing confidence in him and having Johnson behind him. Looks dangerous - that cross for Borini was tremendous. One concern was his tendency to want to kick it and chase at times. Needs to use his pace to his advantage rather than to the opponents.

Borini: 6 He moves almost as much as Suarez which must make the two of them a nightmare. Needs to lift his head and get his touch going; should have scored but he should also have had at least one assist and maybe two if Suarez had his finishing boots on.

Shelvey: 7.5 I haven't been in the Shelvey love affair but that was by far his best display; did everything nice and simple, kept running all game and produced a superb left foot effort which had Hart panicking.

Carroll: 6 Tried hard but was bought on too late. Thought he was about to win it with that header but needed an extra 6 inches of elevation.

Enrique Was glad to see him come on and run hard but wasn't really long enough to judge him. Hope Rodgers can sharpen him up cause he was our bonus player for the first 2/3 of last season.
