One good performance from Lucas doesn't change the fact that Gerrard and Lucas shouldn't be on the pitch together. This has been tried and tested many times including this season and it just never works. I really hope Brendan doesn't try it again vs Chelsea. Also none of that horrible 3-4-2-1 concoction (with half of the team playing in wrong positions) he inexplicably tried against Newcastle. The midfield should be Gerrard-Allen-Hendo, obviously, and then I would stick one of Lallana, Coutinho or Sterling in front of the "diamond" and play Balotelli and Borini or Lambert up front.
See, talking of things that don't work I think we've proven that combination doesn't work.
Gerrard at the base of a diamond requires movement and he's not going to get enough of it in that lineup.
Gerrard and Lucas may not be traditionally successful but it has been successful. Plus, with our lack of goal threat I think Gerrard needs to be closer to the pointy end and relieved of some of the multiple responsibilities he has.
I want to see Can in there too - there were glimpses of his strength against Madrid and I'd like to see him occupy Matic.
A key against Chelsea is Fabregas. A key for Fabregas is having Matic doing a lot of the combative, hard work. If he's got his hands full I think Cesc will struggle. Obviously this counts on Can continuing his improvement but nothing else we've shown previously is going to bother Chelsea. I hope they had a rotten flight home.

Hmmmmm might bring out the new and improved pig for this one. There needs to be some kissing done to jump start our season.
The thing is, you can probably do that with most combinations we have, given how poor in general we've been this season.
I think they can play together, but it depends on what roles we give each of them. If Gerrard were to play that bit further up the pitch, and Can and Lucas were the two further back, I think it can work.
I think they can start together as long as Lucas is played as a defensive mid. He was played as a CM in that game.
