So with all of this guff about tonight's team giving Rodgers something to think about for Saturday, who would you start against Chelsea? I'd go with:

Mignolet
Manquillo
Skrtel
Toure
Moreno
Gerrard
Henderson
Can
Lallana
Sturridge / Borini
Sterling

I'd prefer the return of the diamond with Balotelli / Borini up front (I'm assuming Sturridge will be on t'bench)

But Rodgers will likely go with 1 up front again - in which case I'd prefer coutinho to Lallana in your line up.

I propose the Burroughs/Bowie cut-up technique. Put all the names in a hat, throw it up in the air and pick eleven from all of the bits that land on the floor. Yeah, take that, all of you nae-sayers, yeah!!

I'd actually happily play Lambert instead of Borini (who did a lot of running tonight against Madrid) and Lallana instead of Coutinho but I think Lallana will be tired after tonight as well.

I personally think anyone who wants to see Manquillo play ahead of Johnson after witnessing what happened tonight is borderline masochistic and certainly sadistic.

Sturridge, Sterling (who looks tired to me) and Lallana on the bench.

I'd go for a similar sort of setup to the one I was advocating playing against Real tonight - a diamond with Borini and Sterling up front. I agree, Sterling does look worn out but we have no one else that can get in behind teams with Sturridge out.

It's hard to see tonight having much influence on Rodgers selection against Chelsea. Feels like Lovren, Balotelli, Henderson, Gerrard and Sterling are almost certs to all come back into the side with the main variables being the fullbacks, third midfielder and third attacker as usual. But who knows, Rodgers might surprise us again.

I will take a 1 nil loss.. They are all the rage it seems..
Ah pack that in Jono mate. No one is happy to lose 1 nil. Who has said they are happy for us to ever lose a game or is this all stemming from that one misguided post from Gary?

Many on here expected a cricket score. We fecking lost 3 nil at Anfield. No one was happy with that defeat either. I think the circumstances (away to best team in the world, with a 'weakened' team) has made a few begrudgingly accept the loss as many feared a battering but no one is happy we lost or deems it's acceptable to lose.

It not so much we lost.. just that we never really set out to get a result..

The line up just smacked of defeat even before it started..

I've never ever in my life seen a Liverpool team do that in Europe..

I can take heart from some performances some fringe players put in.. But my biggest concern is just how ridiculously toothless we are in attack..

I'm under the impression that we should have started what we would call our bigger guns in Henderson, Gerrard and Sterling. Other than that I had no problems with the selection. We can be an odd bunch at times. Many wanted Johnson dropped (got it). Many wanted Lovren to sit out due to lack of form (got it). Many derided Balotelli for being a passenger and felt that he can't play up top on his so should be dropped (got it). Lallana or Coutinho is a push decision for me personally. I like them both.

Lucas, Can and Allen then picked as they would provide an energetic shield that also advocates ball retention. What we sadly lacked was guile to hurt them. That's why Sterling and Gerrard should have played but some think we did better without them.

I also thought it was insulting to the player's who came in (are they all internationals?). I felt some were implying that we played a savagely weakened team. It's not like we played total unknowns and tried to throw the game. Saying that isn't a defence for Roger's team selection though. As I said above, I would personally have played Gerrard, Henderson and Sterling. It's the CL and at the Bernabeu. You play your so called big hitters but the rest were fair game.

I think I like that. But I'd probably play Balotelli instead of Borini.

I'd have balotelli behind Borini. The same back 4 as tonight. Can, Lucas, Hendo and Coutinho in mf.

You are joking, yes??? Please tell me you are.

I'd play our one defensive midfielder in defensive midfield, and then put Gerrard in Henderson's position.

Stick Henderson in the stands for all I care, he's done fuck all for about 2 months now.

Well, he was excellent against West Brom at the start of Oct. Assist for Lallana's goal and scored the winner himself.

Apart from that however, Hendo has been pretty poor.

Mignolet
Moreno
Lovren
Kolo
Manquillo

Lucas
Allen
Can

Sterling

Borini
Balotelli

Some givens : Gerrard, Sterling and Henderson are all going to start. Coutinho probably too and Lovren now possibly only a maybe. It would be very very tough to drop Toure after that performance, he deserves to start but I feel that's a big call for BR to make. Was Lovren dropped against RM or was he being saved for this one ?

We need players to pressure Terry & Cahill, to pull them out of position, and someone to get hold of Matic (Can) & Fabregas (Henderson) if we are going to find a way to score and also reduce the flow to Hazard.

I'd play Manquillo but I'm pretty sure BR will start Johnson. Ditto Toure over Lovren. Ditto Balotelli over Borini. And BR will go 4-3-3 again instead of the diamond.

Mate, did you watch him? I've seen yo-yo's in more control of a situation. I genuinely lost count of how many times he got done.

I did make it clear elsewhere that he was up against some potent attacking players but he never got near them and was nowhere for their goal.

Lucas deserves to play on last nights showing, he was hooked reasonably early too, so I wouldn't be surprised if BR had this in mind.

Mig
Johnson Toure Lovren Moreno
Lucas Can
Sterling Gerrard Lallana
Borini

Play Lallana over Coutinho cos he keeps the ball better

If Toure plays like he did yesterday, then great, but I have little confidence that he will. He's just confused and confounded expectations too often. But it was great to see him do well. As for Can, I hope he's still getting back to full fitness because I'd hate to think he's normally that size, shape and speed. When he tried a powerful run forward yesterday he seemed to go backwards, like a music hall comic with his braces stuck on the doorknob. Harry Redknapp's Taarabt-ometer would have exploded.
