He achieved the same stats as this season for both Lille and St Etienne, but a lower average in total at about 7-8 goals per season. He was hardly as unknown as Kante who only had 1 season in Ligue 1. We were linked with Payet when we bought Downing, and if I remember correctly Comolli suggested Payet and Matuidi while Kenny wanted Adam and Downing.
Payet has also been in the French national side regularly since 2013 aswell.
I doubt nobody could have predicted the impact or season he would have at West Ham though.

Yup. Paying 32 million plus for Mane is the typical unimaginative transfer which has come to define our transfer policy. Ideally when we invest 30 plus million, it should be on a player who has the potential to grow to a 50-60 plus million player. I don't think Mane is that. He wont be a complete flop but he wont be a success either (see Lallana).
If Mane does not justify the transfer fee and we struggle again, I hope the fans don't turn on the manager. Bob Paisley will have a tough time finishing above 6th with our transfer committee.

I wouldnt go that far. He's suited to the way Klopp wants us to play. The fee is excesive obvioulsy but at least there is a plan with this signing.
Why not Yen or Baht ? Both are strong and we could save even more.

I agree with most of your post though but not the part about Mane being a success.
There is a good possibility he'll be a great signing considering how he'll fit into the team.

I'm sure you do understand the point. For example, you said "Firmino is gifted, but slow". It's the bluntness of these terms that fails to lead to anything meaningful being said. None of our midfield or attack is 'slow,' and it's simply far too loose and inaccurate to say they are. If people started being more realistic, accurate and specific, then the discussion would get somewhere. Some players lose some of their pace when running with the ball against deep defences, some players lack an explosive burst of speed over short distances but can outpace many defenders over a longer distance, some are the opposite, and some (very rare) players are simply exceptionally fast by any standards. Maybe you'd say Mane is that? But this 'they lack pace,' period, is about as useful and illuminating as 'Frank Lampard's fat'.

Similar arguments were made when we assembled the elite attacking trifecta of Charlie Adam, Downing, and Carroll. Downing provides width, crossing ability, most chance created in the PL, best crosser meets best header, blah blah., Adams corners are amazing etc etc
Indeed, but adding a direct pacey goalscoring winger in Klopps 4-2-3-1 is a bit different.

But why expect different result when we do the same thing over and over again. As I said couple of posts before this, I hope I am really really wrong about Mane. I hope you get back to me in a year, rub my face in it, and remind me consistently how wrong I was 🙂
But I just dont see Mane being worth that much money. If we need players to reach the next level - we need players who can take us to the next level either immediately or who can evolve and develop into such players. Mane isnt that. He is a very good player, not an elite one.
The other aspect is why even bother with scouting and transfer committees and sabermetrics and bullshit when it appears we do our scouting based on match of the day.

People saying we never find value in the transfer market. Yes we fucking do. Off the top of my head Coutinho, Studge, Origi, Milner would all go for shagloads more than we paid for them. We get huge fees for masch, torres and Suarez. We just got Sane for fuck all.

How about 'they are completely different players'. No ? That doesn't work for you ?
Re the last bit there about scouting. Several articles I've read has Klopp as the one driving this transfer forward. And that he has been tracking Mane since his Salzburg days. I doubt his goals against us last season made up Klopps mind.. 😉
