Arsenal's wage structure is such that they will always be a selling club. The only way they stand a chance of winning the league again is if they have another purple patch in terms of developing talent/buying players on the rise. And even then their success is likely to be short-lived because all the stars will jump ship to clubs who will pay them extortionate wages.

Arsenal shareholder Alisher Usmanov has criticised the running of the club after Robin van Persie announced he would not be renewing his contract.

The Uzbek billionaire has sent a strongly worded letter to the board accusing them of a lack of investment.

"Yet again we are faced with losing our true marquee player because we cannot give confidence we can win trophies," he wrote.

"Where are the safeguards to ensure this doesn't happen again?"

Usmanov's Red and White Holding company has a 29% stake in Arsenal. American businessman Stan Kroenke is the majority shareholder, owning 63% of the club.

Kroenke tried to complete a full takeover of the club in 2011 but Usmanov insisted he would not sell.

In the open letter Usmanov accuses chief executive Ivan Gazidis of giving supporters the impression that Red and White was in a bitter stand-off with the board.

"In our view it is clear you are trying to distract attention from the more fundamental issues facing the club. These are the financial model, the lack of investment and club's future strategic direction."

The letter suggests the "real conflict is between the supporters' expectations and your visions for the club".

He adds: "At the heart of this is the policy of so-called self-financing. The previous decision by the board to fund the building of the Emirates Stadium with long-term debt was, we believe, certainly not about self-financing.

Usmanov is still bitter about losing out on gaining control of the club. His preferred option was for a rights issue - all investors are given the opportunity to pony up more money to retain their percentage shareholding. He knows no other shareholder wants to do it, except him so he'd have an opportunity to gain a larger share of the club.

The money could of course be used to fund players, which is a nice PR benefit for him right now.

I always refer to him as "Van Persie" but since VP might be a bit confusing I do occasionally use RVP on forums.
There's a guy where I work who was recently appointed VP. Everyone was congratulating him as they met him at lunch time, and the cashier at the restaurant til said to him, in all innocence, "Congratulations on your VPness, Eamonn"

🙂

Former Gunners striker Bobby Gould last night insisted Van Persie has no choice but to take the money and run from Arsenal.

That’s the controversial view of former Gunners striker Gould after Dutch skipper Van Persie confirmed in midweek he will not be signing a new three-year deal, worth £140,000 per week, at the Emirates.

Some angry Arsenal fans are accusing Van Persie, 29 next month, of disloyalty, claiming he should not be turning his back on the club when they stuck by him during several injury-ridden seasons earlier in his career.

Gould, though, totally disagrees with that view and believes anyone who can collect £12m a year elsewhere – and win silverware to boot – is fully justified in walking away.

The ex-Wales boss, 66, insists he would do exactly the same in Van Persie’s position and that the ex-Feyenoord forward, having been with Arsenal since 2005, owes Wenger’s men nothing.

Gould, who played for TEN different clubs during the 60s and 70s, declared: “I don’t think he’s doing anything wrong.

“Robin is a professional footballer. What do you expect him to do?

“How many seasons has he played for Arsenal?

“Eight seasons at one club. And how much did they pay for him? Around £2.75m. He’s given his all for the club.”

I dont get it why should a footballer dictate how the club moves forward? Does he own the club, or is he the paying customer? Employees in other walks of life dont get to dictate the way their company moves forward.

It seems RVP has a disavreement on the way to move forward. Its not not enough to see ambition these days... How this intent is isshown also matters it seems.

Gerrard pretty much said the same thing before the CL final in 2005

How much do you think the opinion of Bobby Gould will weigh on the minds of everyone associated with Arsenal?

Oh THAT Bobby Gould, the one who spent two seasons with Arsenal in the late 60s and picked up a league cup runners-up medal.
Yeah, they're shocked and devastated. I mean how could he?

I'm not so sure they do dictate it. They ask for assurances as to how the club will move forward, and if it's not to their liking they can move on. People in the real world do that too.

I said the moment Giroud was signed it was definite he was gone. Maybe that's what affected him during the Euros, as he was definitely off.

It does say a lot about Arsenal ... Their best players want out year after year.

Whatever it says about them, it will apply to us also.

Not really, as we tend to spend the money to try to improve the squad.

Example:
Torres, 50, -> Carroll.
Xabi, 30, -> Aquilani

They don't reinvest the money equally (20+ for Nasri, Fabregas and ... ?)

They've bought a few players in the 10-15M bracket.

They could probably do with one or two top class 20M signings.

Of course not, that's never been their strategy. The point is that all of best players have left too so we're in position to look down on them. In fact, despite their lack of trophy success, they're in a much better position than we are as a club.

I'm not looking down on them - I just feel that we have a better chance to keep players (I guess it will be proven with a player like Agger, or say Lucas, both who seem very loyal to the club and wouldn't leave by choice). Obviously there's always exceptions etc

SAF confirms #mufc bid for Van Persie 'but there are other clubs interested'.
