Penaltelli

Let's just hope we will score the next 5 penalties or so if anyone other than Gerrard was to take them. This episode will be forgotten. If either of Balo or Hendo takes and miss, the media circus will start again.

He didn't make him look weak. He *is* weak. I fear there's no avoiding him becoming captain, but I really doubt he's up to it.

I've had doubts about Henderson being captain as well - I'd frankly just have given it to Skrtel - a definite starter, and the most senior player at the club after Gerrard. Let him hold it for a year or two until someone who's proven himself worthy can take it from him (either Henderson or Can or someone new).

This was always my concern with making him Vice Captain last season, it puts us on an awkward position long term if he has any regression at all.

[article=http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/mignolet-liverpool-keeper-says-used-8682733?]Despite the controversy surrounding Mario Balotelli taking the winning spot kick, Mignolet had nothing but praise for his Italian teammate.

“The main thing is that it is in the net, one nil, that’s what it’s all about. When players come on the pitch as substitutes you want them to contribute and we’ve seen that tonight with all the lads who came on, everybody put in a shift, everyone did their jobs.

“He’s a striker, loves to score goals, it’s always nice for him and will do his confidence the world of good.”[/article]

[article=http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/brendan-rodgers-plays-down-penalty-8682684]“We got the win, which was the most important factor tonight,” said the Reds boss.

“Steven should have taken it as he is our penalty taker. I have a number of outstanding penalty takers in the squad with Jordan, Mario, Rickie Lambert and others.

“You saw the spirit of the team tonight. To get the victory was excellent.”

Asked to clarify if Henderson was scheduled to take penalties, Rodgers responded: “I’m clarifying that we won the game 1-0.”

Yes, cause a 'strong' captain would tell Balo to f* off, take it himself, miss, then tell the whole world Mario was being disrespectful.

Indeed. Hendo has all the qualities to be a great captain.
Always puts the team first but at the same time he works harder than anyone else to lead by example.
Very vocal and knows what its like to have to work for your success.

Stories about him volunteering to take all the media assignments while he was suspended last season so the other players could focus on the run in just screams of a great player off the field aswell.

I'd have no doubt about him growing into a great captain if given the armband.
Gerrards comments last night were disapointing.
Sounded like he thought more about his pundit career than being the current Liverpool captain.

Skrtel or Sakho would get the vice captain role.

So the positives are that so many were confident enough to step up and take a vital penalty at that stage of a game.

Gerrard should have kept his mouth shut. But he can't can he? Remember when he said he told everyone he was leaving to stop the speculation, rumours and disquiet around his future? Then a few days later he come out and said he'd have signed a contract?

Whata. Player he is, but hs a long way from manager material at the moment. There are some things that get left in the dressing room. He should not, as serving captain, been slagging off someone in his team as a pundit. It's just plain wrong.

I think it shows that Mario isn't particularly popular.

Irrespective of whether he should have said anything, Gerrard had no interest in defending him and it was clear where his loyalties lay.
That doesn't give Gerrard the right to say what he did. He should not have been a pundit on our game. The whole thing was cringeworthy.

When mario scored against Spurs, did you see how people went to him ? I dno't really think he's unpopular, I just think Gerrard was being a pundit and forgot he's still the captain of the club. I'd be extremely impressed if Rodgers fined or suspended him for those comments - the dressing room is united, playing well, and Gerrard is sticking a knife into a player who's scored the winner against Spurs, assisted the FA Cup winner against Palace and just given us a win against a team who's on a roll the past few months. I mean, LIVERPOOL comes first Stevie, not whatever you plan to do once you move on.

I actually think Hendo handled it well. He could have dug his heels in and it could have been more unseemly. Studge sticking his tuppence in was the problem. And SG airing the dirty linen in public.
Totally where I am at with it..

So fucked off with him for that, had elements of Stevie Me written all over it.

At least he has realised the error of his ways with his instagram comments, but it's too late. Damage is already done.

That type of behaviour can break team moral...

Which comments mate?

Everyone seems mighty pissed off with Gerrard. Anyone have a link to his comments? Like, the actual footage?

"That type of behaviour can break team morale" is 100% true of what Balo feckin Telli did last night. The degree of support he's getting on here is just unreal. None of this would have happened if he weren't so far up his own dot that he acted like the big kid I'm now convinced he always will be.

Balotelli out. Preferably tomorrow.

A lot of short-termism here, gents. Last night's "Me me me" exhibition from him will cost us dear in the long run if he continues with it. And he will.

It was hardly me me me from Balotelli, he went up to Henderson and said he wants to take it, and Henderson let him, if Henderson really wanted that penalty he needs to have more conviction about himself.

If he scores consistently he can keep with the me me me exhibition.

Last night he was the best penalty taker on the pitch, to let anyone else consider taking it would have been 1) negligent from Rodgers 2)negligent from hendo 3) negligent from balo

If hendo/Gerrard/Sturridge want to be a stickler and not use their own initiative in a pressure cooker of a situation, then more fool them

Penalties are about confidence. If hendo was willing to give the ball up then clearly he wasnt confident enough

Ok that's fine.

But what are your views on our club captain speaking out against a team member on live TV? I think it's so wrong it's untrue. On the pitch things are different.

Phooey. Balotelli being the immature oaf that he is, Hendo knew there'd be trouble if he said no, and the situation was bad enough already.

Balls. Football's about the team. Stop blaming everybody else and start blaming the idiot who caused the whole thing.

The whole thing resulted in a win for us and the team. If hendo had said no to Mario would there be this furore? Clearly hendo is doing it for himself if he says to the best penalty taker on the pitch, "nah, I'll take it". Would there shite. And that annoys me. It was good captaining by hendo, and good bottle from Mario.

I've never seen hendo take a penalty, and I don't want to during the 90 minutes if Gerrard, balo or Lambert is on the pitch.

It's ultimately about the best player for the job and Mario was that man. The match winner getting hung out to dry by the captain is more of an issue for me
