Penaltelli

That as a general proposition is fair enough. IMHO it's still a step too far to extend it with any confidence to a player who wasn't one of those eight.

Oh for God's sake JJ, you would have had more confidence having Hendo taking a crucial peno than Balotelli? If that's so you're not right in the head.

So Baloteli was the designated penalty taker on the pitch when the spot kick was awarded.
He took it and scored.
Can someone please explain to me just what he did wrong apart from spark an odd reaction from Stevie?
As above.

First time I've popped into this thread because I thought it a non-issue to begin with. Rodgers said Balo was the designated penalty taker, if anything it was Hendo who cocked up IF he though he should take it - and I don't think that was the case either, Hendo himself said he was just checking Balo was OK with it.

Oh if I had wanted to rant on about Mario doing his job properly, i wouldn't have conveniently ignored his remarkable goal-scoring record for us, not to mention his penalty-taking prowess. Yup, job well done so far Mario.

Did anyone actually notice his celebration after he scored ? What a humble guy !

He was the designated penalty taker. Please try and take this piece of information on board, it's kind of crucial to the whole discussion.

That's uncharacteristically daft for you, Doc. My point had sod all to do with having more confidence in Hendo taking a peno. The point - which I stand by - was about you stating with confidence that he would probably have missed. I maintain that that stretches the evidence too far.

JJ if I'm being daft, you're being a bloody pompous dick, arguing a technicality rather than the main issue. Stretches the 'evidence too far'. This isn't a legal proceeding. It is a unadulterated fact that we've missed lots of penos precisely because we've allowed people who brave enough to take them, but who are not tried and tested, resulting in an unacceptable amount of misses. So what I meant, and I think you know I meant, unless you're completely obtuse, is that the odds were much better with Balotelli than Hendo.

Call it a "technicality" and burble on about "legal proceedings" all you like, Doc. Take another look above and you'll see that I've actually agreed with the more general gloss you've tried to put on it since, but the OP from you that I take issue with wasn't a general one, it was specifically about Hendo's chances of missing.

I've far too much liking and respect for you to want this to descend further, so I'll leave it there.

Those hacks on Sky - including the normally sensible Alison Rudd - were all praising Gerrard for having the 'courage' to slag off his teammate on ITV. Unbelievable!
Gang of twats

All of this, is against the "liverpool way" completely. Especially the pathetic response by captain, and then the manager putting the kick in.

Only balo seems to have done the obvious thing, and stuck it in the net and left us all worrying about what we should have done afterwards

Now Carra's calling Rodgers 'stupid' for criticising Balotelli's work rate a few days ago. Obviously I agree with him but blimey all of this is unseemly. We've got a media officer at the club - she needs to learn from this, pronto, and have a tactful word with the manager, captain and other senior players to avoid this nonsense. It's all so unnecessary.

Agree with what you're saying. Was a bit of an odd comment from Rodgers given the better performances from Balotelli. Although they were short ones. As for Carra, there seems to be something about being a pundit that makes people want to spout 'edgy' or 'controversial' bollocks but it's all part of incessant media over sensalisation of the game

Didn't you read the memo? St Steven of Gerrard is beyond reproach in the media.

I think it's exceedingly rare that I disagree with Julian; and FWIW I do think Balotelli was wrong to take the ball off Hendo.

But I think the greater error was in letting Hendo take the penalty in the first place; his record is rubbish with penalties.

It might have been a bit of glory-hunting, but the likelihood of him scoring was far higher, and I'm actually very gratified that he was willing to take the risk if he had a chance to score. If he missed he would have been flayed alive.

Sturridge and Gerrard really should have STFU.
