Gerrard and Sturridge were both pathetic infants. How dare they put their stupid ego's and prides and image ahead of the sole purpose of the game.... to win. Losers the pair of them.

Sturridge, like all personnel should, followed the Managers orders and told Balotelli to let Henderson take the penalty. Henderson bottled it, Balotelli ignored orders and made next years captain look weak. Neither celebrated the winning goal.

He didn't make him look weak. He *is* weak. I fear there's no avoiding him becoming captain, but I really doubt he's up to it.

If that's the case then Rodgers is fecking stupid to have hendo ahead of one of the best penalty takers is the world. I cannot believe for one minute that was the managers orders..

One is a proven penalty taker, the other isn't..

It probably likely hendo was the penalty taker until Balo comes on the pitch.
I agree that Balotelli is the probably the better penalty taker, my point is that he(hopefully) will be gone in May and Henderson is next years club captain who he publicly shit on, when next years captain is in the process of taking over set piece duties. We are all happy with a goal but it could cause more trouble than it's worth, only Emre Can celebrated and tried desperately to get the others involved.

Anyway the downside to this..

No chance Henderson will sign a new contract now. As soon as he goes to sign it Balotelli will keep taking his pen off him.

'publicly shit on'...

I think Gerrard played his 'Mr Liverpool' Card to literally..

God I'm pissed with him for that..

Balo has done well since he has come back into the team.. Just didn't deserve the kicking he got..

That's something he should learn from Dalglish. Kenny would never have slagged off anyone at the club in public. That made him resented by the media and even, bizarrely, some fans, but it IS the Liverpool Way.

First of all I thought Henderson wanted Sturridge to take it. Hence Sturridge's involvement. Henderson looked to be trying to intervene just like Carragher did in Istanbul to take the ball from Garcia to give it to Alonso. But that doesn't seem to be the case though. It seems Henderson was willing to take responsibility as captain and take it. He probably wanted to take it too since he tried to take everything else during the game. However, Balotelli was the right man to take it.

I did notice Henderson looking to the bench during the discussions. For all we know Henderson was the designated taker. We aren't privy to this info. If it was Henderson it would explain the persistence from Sturridge and Henderson. I'd be suprised if Balotelli wasn't the designated taker and it's just a case of Henderson trying to assume responsibility.

Gerrard threw Balotelli under the bus with his comments. Amateur from Gerrard. He clearly doesn't 'like' Balotelli.

Apart from Gerrard, our best penalty takers are Mario and Lambert. If either of those came on as subs and we got a pen, they'd surely be the logical choices.

Edit : Just saw Carragher's tweet. Henderson was the designated taker. Explains his persistence and eyes to the bench for guidance.

Yep. Henderson was designated taker as he started. When Balotelli came up he jumps the queue. Perhaps that wasn't made clear by Rodgers.

Mario is only hopefully gone in May. Steven Gerrard is definitely gone in May. If prepping for the next season is the argument for Henderson, then why didn't Gerrard step aside and let Henderson or Coutinho or someone else take the penalty against Spurs.

Typical old fashion Liverpool. When in doubt, put the ball in the net and we discuss your options later - Sir Bob Paisley..... He didn't know it was a problem you scored and that everybody had their say after...

Both Zturridge and Balotelli have the ego to derail all the good things we seem to be on track for.

The worry is that even Sterling seems to have learned from the best when it comes to this kinda shit. But he seems more like Stevie in that, he doesnt lets his ego affect the teams performance. I cant say the same about Balotelli and Sturridge.

Henderson doesn't hand it to him, he's backing away from Balotelli and the ball is taken out of his hands. It's all a bit of a confused mess, thank fuck he scored though. I'd love to see him try and take the ball off Gerrard like that, there'd be a hand off and the words fuck off mouthed in his direction.

Will this pressure Henderson a little bit now if he's the one to take the next pen when Balotelli isn't on the pitch?

Fucking sky and the wider football 'media' want us to keep t(w)alking about shit like this as if its a fucking thing to keep this fucking circus of nonsense fed and flames fanned, column inches filled, articles written etc etc.

Its a fucking NOTHING.

Pisses me off that its even mentioned.

Love the game. Hate everything else around the game.

Gerrard had the opportunity and the responsibility to throw cold water over all this. Instead he made it a lot worse. If he had just been diplomatic about it as Henderson and even Peter Reid of all people were doing then none of this would have happened. Not to mention the potential harm this could do for the morale of Balotelli and his integration into the squad.

Really disappointed in Gerrard tonight.

But yeah, Oncy, you're right.

The talking points of football are anything but the football itself these days. It really is a blessing not having Sky any more.

Being blown out of proportion.

This kind of thing happens every now and then.

1. Yes Mario was disrespectful towards the captain, but ...
2. It shows despite his form overall this season, Mario isn't afraid to step up in a pressure situation and put it all on the line.

I thought overall Mario did quite well when he came on. Lost count the amount of times he drew a foul from Besiktas.
