All I'm saying is:

a) its a bit much saying its close to impossible 2 months after Leicester won the league, and the title race being between Spurs and Leicester.

b) the Bundesliga is probably more competitive then you think

Last season was an anomaly

We won't finish in the top 4. Our squad isn't good enough and we need three new players

If our goal is to finish the season 6-8th (which we probably will do anyway) then I agree with him.

Klopp's form last season from when he took over would have had the club 4th in the Premiership.

I realize these snapshots are slightly misleading, but they do also capture a positive pattern.

IF LCFC can win the league ahead of Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd, Spurs, then of f-ing course we can finish forth

The future is at hand, and we probably the best man manager in the league with great resources at our disposal.

Get it together ladies. Until December anyway.

Let's just give Ajax a load of money and get Riechedly Bazoer for a few years before he fucks off to Barcelona.

He said now that we've ended our interest in Zielinski and cooled the interest in Chilwell.

Goal reporting the same with Zielinski close to signing for Milan.

I don't think we were ever really "that" interested in Zielinski. We could have just stumped up an extra mill or two and gone in for him. He seemed more keen to sign for us than the other way around. The whole thing smelled of back up for Dahoud.

Christ almighty. 2 months to go to the end of the transfer window and it's panic stations and unbridled self-pity in here.

So people are dissing German football compared to English? Were Leicester won the league and the national team were beaten by Iceland and AS normal noone did well in European tournaments... Makes sense...

The problem is, in most other leagues, you can build in this way while only a couple of big clubs with great squads will batter you. In this league there are so many of those you could easily stay stuck well outside the champions league positions, and thus can't get the top players to take you to another level. It's great that Klopp and his assistants are at the club but I don't think we have much of a chance no matter what they do.

Great post.

But you really do have to admire him for not taking the route of insinuating how bad a hand he has been dealt with by his past manager and trying to salvage what he has before gutting them. King Kenny was the only other modern manager we had who did not do that. Every other manager we had in some form or the other (and sometimes rightfully so) had statements which in a way tried to pin the blame of the poor performance on the squad which was assembled by the previous manager.

This is really a brilliant quote. "It is using experience, using the base and not killing the base and starting completely new."

Second with the Guardiola at City, Mourinho at United and the resulting arms race happening, I wonder if the owners and Klopp got together and decided we need to do something different and play the longer game. Not worry about qualifying for CL next season but build a strong core of young players whose organic growth in their game plus tactics will propel us higher in 2-3 years and then supplement them with superstars. The contract extension might be the owners way of providing Klopp the support to play the longer game.

I don't share the view that the Premier League is unwinnable. Yes we can recognise their are richer clubs than us who can afford higher fees and wages, but the clubs that epitomise that are City United and Chelsea and there were all shit last year. It's unlikely they all will be shit this year, but it shows how much more there is to it.

I would prefer we signed at least one quality proven player to help us compete, but there isn't many about in truth. Klopp needs to be smart, build a team that is more than the sum of its parts, is cunning in the final third and works its bollocks off in defence. If he can do that, as he has done in the past, we will be competing at the higher end of the league.

You're telling me, mate. You lot got to two Cup finals last season and you'll have no European distractions to worry about in 2016/17. Get a grip, folks.

Signed Christ.
I'm a little bit confused. I've seen you variously purport to be God and Jesus .. and you sign off as a Judge. Master of disguise ? Or the Devil incarnate ?!

City, United and Chelsea will spend obscene amounts of money this summer, but that's because all 3 of these sides require an almost complete rebuilding under their new managers. Guardiola reportedly wants to replace 8 out of 11 starters, Chelsea will move to a system with 3 at the back probably for the first time in their history and will find out by trial and error whether this system works in the EPL or not.

Mourinho will be building a new team at United – there will be a lot of questions such as what to do with Rooney and whether it's smart to build your team around a 35-year-old striker, so even if he is ultimately successful in rebuilding this side, I think there is virtually no threat of United winning the title this year. Personally I would be more worried about more settled sides like Arsenal and Spurs.

As for us, I think last season showed that we have the quality and the tactical masterplan to beat any team in the EPL – but we lacked consistency due to several persistent problems such as vulnerability on set-pieces and lack of pace up front. We have already addressed those weaknesses through the transfer market; if we don't lose Coutinho we will definitely do better next season.

Definitely not the latter. I leave that to the scummers down the E.Lancs Rd.who put him on their badge.

I think we had numerous chances to re-establish ourselves and we pretty much blew it every time. I think it's become a little hopeless now.

That's not to say we can't finish in the top four now and again or perhaps fluke the league one day (though the odds of every top team being turd in the same season happening again have to be pretty slim) but sustained success and a genuine re-emergence at the top... it's hard to see how we can accomplish that short of getting bought out by people willing to spend like City to get us there.

The problem is that the top teams (the real ones) in this league can spend as much as they need to every summer to put things right. And when they spend big, they get the top players, not the maybes or the Bentekes.

Just look at what happened to us over the last couple years. We had a hugely exciting team, finished 2nd and made it into the CL. Suarez left. We struggled to buy anyone even half decent to replace him despite having the best part of 50M burning a hole in our pockets. Then we lose Sterling the summer after. And this summer Leicester are getting picked apart.

It's fine to try and play the long game but we've consistently proven we're no smarter as a club than anyone else and in a league where every team is spending big and strengthening across the board, time is not going to be on our side.

I don't see any of that as being negative or whatever else, it's just how it is.

That being said, I'm actually quite looking forward to the new season. We've got a decent enough squad and if we get a bit of luck with injuries (finally) and things click, we could make a decent go of it.

We're not going to get one but we really did need to get some genuinely outstanding this summer though to give this team a proper boost.

We don't need someone outstadning.

How is every great team in the history of football built?

The answer is that all the great teams was built around leadership and game intelligence. If you have one player that don't have good game intelligence then he could destroy the whole system/tactic. One player could be enough to that kind of damage.

They don't need to be fantastic players. They need to understand the game. If it is one thing Klopp is great at then it is to learn players how to play the game, he makes them understand the game. Just like Rafa for example. He also learns them leadership.

Pep for example change the system so often that all the players on the pitch must have fantastic game intelligence. He will get rid of every player that don't have that. Rafa did the same. Conte will most probably do the same at Chelsea.

Game intelligence is much more important than skill. You can have the best skills in the world but if you don't know how to use them then you will be an average player. If you have very good game intelligence then you train up your skills better. It is very difficult to train up your game intelligence but Klopp know how to do that.

We need leadership and game intelligence. Every player in the team must be a good leader and have good game intelligence. Everyone. We don't need an outstanding player. We need to build a smart and clever team packed with leadership.

I do wonder who banned me yesterday. I couldn't post or even log in for more than a day.

I can sort off see where Klopp is coming from as there were many times when the team showed that they are well capable of competing with anyone in the Premiership.
If anything it is their mentality and self belief that was their undoing.
And a dodgy defense didn't help either I guess

Which is why the signing of a goalkeeper who isnt a nervous mistake prone twat was the key signing for us.... last season with injuries we were basically unlucky as we could have been. Replacing Mig was key, if the new lad can settle the nerves of the defence we will be fine. Swapping Benteke for Mane made sense also. Maybe im being harsh considering Mig's genuine attempts but he was a blatant weak link and a disaster waiting to happen for us.... game after game... that is a contributory factor to are porous defence and now i hope it will begin to heal and its confidence will rise. Im hoping a bit of strength in midfield can be instilled also and that Firmino has a better season... its up in the air completely but im optimistic this season, especially in light of not having to play thursdays...

And as for wishing for a "big name" who exactly?? In the current market Pogba is apparently being touted for 100M... its a fucking daft market... apart from Barca's forward line and Ronaldo with his hopefully permanently damaged knee who are the "big names" now?? There are other famous players and some of them are nifty but... can we get them to step out the CL for at least one season? how much would they cost in a market where a reasonably gifted 22 year old "big name" is being touted for 100M....

Im genuinely not worried about names...

Kante was fucking awesome last season at Leicester but none of us really new who the fuck he was beforehand... Klopp is dead right... we need to look for what we need and go with what we get and what weve already got.

Have to agree with Arn regarding the need for better game intelligence but you need quality players because they are the ones that have that 'brain' (well usually). Taking Kante as an example - not the most skilled player but uses what he knows to the best of his abilities and therefore stands out.

It's interesting following the long RC thread on final position predictions for 2016/17. Most non-Liverpool supporters (except those obviously biased who refuse to put Liverpool in the Top 6) have us finishing anywhere from 2nd to 6th but in general 3rd, 4th or 5th and from the comments seem far more confident that we will do well this season than our own 6CM fans ! I guess it's always difficult to be objective from within.

You just think that because you're a Liverpool fan.

I agree that it is more important to get players that the manager wants and are the right fit mentally and positionally, than a big name, but I wonder if we're getting overly obsessed with it to the point of having a savior complex.

Where we focus all our energies on uncovering the next big thing and ignore some of the great bargains or ready made solutions out there.
