Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Woo Vikings! Didn't get to watch the game because I was on the road but I may have to secure some playoff tickets.

Sorry, Stu - I know you've asked me this before and I forgot to reply then...

It's because they're a nothing organisation who, every now and then get delusions of grandeur, and I'm a (Boston) Patriots fan. They're like Spurs... They ALWAYS play us hard (fair enough), but simply melt away against other teams that we could use a little "help" with - See last year's final game, for example. At home, against Miami, they just bent over and took what they were given, with ready-made excuses prepared in advance.

Every now and then they'll go on a nice little run, you'll think they've actually got something for a change, and then they'll revert to type, as usual. Their players also talk a lot, particularly in the run up to Patriot games, like they can say anything to that team... It'd be like Blackburn spouting off before a Man U game, just 'cos they're close neighbours. YOu've not earned that right, mate...

They're living off their Super Bowl 3 victory, like Newcastle live off their FA Cup win 50 odd years ago, as if that somehow still makes them a 'big' team. Oh, and their fans are wankers for the most part, loud and brash like they'd ever actually done anything.

You're the only thing associated with this poxy organisation that I actually like, mate.

Sorry.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

So I have decided to support the Newcastle United of the NFL?
Ha ha ha, tough break for me. Hopefully they are about to start a new era of trophies and success.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Just when all the drama seems to be gone in big D, Roy Williams has to open his mouth, and throw Romo, and Miles Austin under the bus.

They just can't help themselves, can they?

That's a bit of a blow. I got them in Oncy's sweepstake, so am kinda rooting for them this season.

Huh? I thought what he said wasn't bad at all. Things aren't 'ok' chemistry wise on the pitch but they're both working on it, and he's really happy to be playing for an offense that's clicking and winning (unlike the 'better' WR in Detroit). If anything, I think Williams showed what a good team player he is - unless something new came out in the last few hours.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

What he said (I hadn't seen this, but don't think it's that bad):

"I didn't complain," Williams said. "I didn't complain that I didn't get the ball. I got seven opportunities in [last Sunday's win over Seattle]. All I said was that, when it comes to me, it's not there. The percentages ... back my case. I'm not saying it can't be fixed because that's what we do every day. We try to work on it and get it fixed.

"I'm not a T.O. [Terrell Owens] or I'm not trying to be a T.O. I don't know why people are trying to put me in that category because I'm happy to win. I've said that 100 times."

Romo's responded well though - it's not going to be a circus.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

impressive:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Peyton Manning is the first NFL quarterback to pass for 40,000 yards in any decade.

Manning needed 19 yards to reach the milestone. He did it on a 5-yard completion to Pierre Garcon in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Houston Texans.

That could be the first of many accomplishments for Manning on Sunday. If the Colts win, Manning will tie Fran Tarkenton for fourth place on the career wins list for quarterbacks with 125. He also needs four touchdown passes to become the first in league history to throw for 300 in a decade.

Among his accomplishments this season, Manning became the fastest quarterback to 4,000 completions and passed Tarkenton for third place on the career touchdowns list.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

A genuine question, has anyone else ever watched their team go 17 points up and KNEW they'd still lose?

The consistency they can do it with is remarkable.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Cowboys with a HUGE win of the Eagles, a team that trounced the Gmen last week, 20-16. Our defense (much criticized by Whaddapie) was fantastic - and the offense, while it struggled at times, did what it had to do win the game. 6-2 and 1st place after 8 games is the last thing I would have expected, but this team can only get better. It's a team, and when undrafted FAs like Ogletree start getting big 1st downs, you know something is right.

Oh, and those 'BEST IN THE WORLD' Giants are now 5-4 and in serious trouble ...

It wasn't that bad, but it never should have been said in public. Those feelings should be worked out between team mates. You would never see one of Bill Belicheck's players saying that about one of his team mates.

Good win though, 3 very winnable games in a row coming up too.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Karl - I just want to say I absolustely love the way Keith Brooking plays the game ... I love his passion.,

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

No team claimed running back Larry Johnson off waivers, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, which means Johnson now is free to sign with any team and the Kansas City Chiefs must pay him the balance of the $2.1 million left on his contract this season.

The Chiefs released Johnson on Monday, the day he was due back from his second suspension in the past 12 months. Johnson was suspended for posting a gay slur on his Twitter account and questioning the competence of head coach Todd Haley.

The 29-year-old was also fined for his actions. Last week, an online fan petition was started asking the Chiefs not to let Johnson become the team's all-time leading rusher -- a record he's just 75 yards shy of.

Behind a poor offensive line this year, Johnson has averaged a paltry 2.7 yards for the Chiefs (1-7) and appeared not to have the quickness and punishing power that enabled him to rush for more than 1,700 yards in Pro Bowl seasons in 2005 and '06.

Johnson winds up his Chiefs career with 5,996 yards rushing and 55 touchdowns. He also caught 151 passes for 1,369 yards and six TDs.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

10 minutes left in the game, Boys are down 17-0 (even though I think Triplett got it wrong with that 'non reviewed' fumble recovery by Jones) ...

I thought we'd lose this game - but not like this ... We've been horrifically poor on offense and we've had some really bad injuries (it seems) to Colombo, Jenkins and Hamlin.

The sad thing is despite our struggles I think we win this game were it not for Roy Williams. A fumble to end the 1st half and a pathetic drop with the team driving in the 2nd half and only down 3-0 ... Tough to stomach.

Skip Bayless was saying he 'expected' the Boys to lose this game but still go 12-4 ... I hope he's right but with December on the way, we cannot afford to begin the month with anything but a 8-3 record due to our past struggles ... Sheesh, December for the Cowboys is the league for Liverpool the past 20 odd years - we just expect to get banged up.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Makes me glad I had to work, I would have been throwing things. Philly lost also so all is well.

Skip Bayless is a great commentator by the way. Very good insight on a wide range of sports.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

The end of this colts - new england game is insane... Belichick made an absolutely insane call (as is his successful wont from time to time) to go for it on 4th down, well into their own end... They don't get it, and in a game that NE was comfortably dominating for large periods, they look to have completely thrown it away.

One of the worst decisions he has ever made, horrible clock management and strategy.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

What a match 🙂

Manning with great plays in the last few minutes to setup 2 touch downs.

Reggie Wayne's catch in the in-zone was top draw.

Fucking love it seeing the Patriots lose.

yah i've always liked him ... just so you have some positives:

Roy Williams, despite those two blunders, had his best game for us ...
Our defense struggles to create turnovers but will keep most teams I think below 20 points
Spencer, despite another 'sackless' night, is becoming a very very disruptive player in opponent's backfields. I think he's on the verge of becoming a star.

And some more negatives:

Something is up with Witten - he's barely doing anything in games anymore.
Bennett still not being involved enough.
Injuries

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

From what I gather from Skip himself this morning, it was more of a case of the Packers being untouchable then Dallas playing bad.

Apparently if they played like that every week they would be unstoppable.

Dallas will be okay. I think they will win the NFC East, and their first playoff game, but not make it past the second.

I don't agree with bayless for a few reasons ... The 'major' plays went against us for some reason:

1) missed FG on opening drive (that sets the tone early on)
2) Scandrick's sack and fumble recovery - but Jenkins with a foolish 'hands to face' penalty.
3) Roy Williams fumble after a 40 yard reception at the Packer 30
4) Roy Williams drop when only down 3-0 at the Packers 30
5) the inability to challenge whether Jones had recovered Romo's fumble from Woodson's blind side blitz

We should have at least made this more competitive - that we didn't was because we were very poor.

At 6-3, the next two games are must wins - because once December rolls on, every Cowboy staff member, player and fan will be nervous.

Hello Avy - A few things, amigo...

Your boys have been playing FAR better football since the KC game, and even last week, I thought they just game up against a team that was desperate and peaking in that one particular game. Even so, but for a terrible interception on the goalline and some worse decisions regarding fumble recoveries and coaches challanges, you'd still have been driving to win the game late.

But, let's not get carried away... You have a little pop at my early critisism of the defense, above. I said what you reference after week 5, mate. Yiz were 3-2 having barely beaten the pathetic Chiefs... Hardly Bears circa '85, my friend. I critisised their lack of sacks and turnovers, if I remember correctly. At the time, they had no interceptions AT ALL and little or no sacks either. Worthy of critisism, I think.

Their (then) mediocrity is born out even more by the fact that, even after the past month of outstanding defensive efforts, you're ranked 16th in overall defense. You've had to be brilliant for the entire 2nd part of this first half of the season to get to 16th, mate... You're 8th in sacks, despite having multi-sack games for fun recently, and you're 26th in turnovers forced. You're not ranked better than 8th in any of the defensive categories so far this season. And again, all this after being among the better defenses for 4 successive matches now.

So, I think that my (then) critisism was very unbiased and wholy warranted.

Now, going forward, this team absolutely has a chance to be one of the better teams around... Romo seems to have settled down, and if Williams can get his head out of his arse, your offense, which is among the league's best (4th overall, I think) can get even better. If your defense continues to play like this, you can go deep into the playoffs for sure.

The problems is that so could have all the other recent Dallas teams - Two years ago, yiz went 11-1 to start the season, for example. If this team goes out meekly in the post season, it'll be the 4th or 5th season in a row where it has enormously under-achieved... Now, I don't think that'll happen this year, but nor did I last season at this point, or the year before, etc...

Your head coach doesn't know what your offensive coordinator is doing, and that's a problem. Your offensive coordinator seems to panic and get away from his game plan too quickly (three very good running backs that are often drastically underused, etc...). And you've just suffered what may be a pivotal OL injury.

You should kill Washington and my pathe beloved Raiders to go into December strongly, and from there, you should be able to hit the playoffs with momentum and confidence. I think you may even be battling for the first round bye in late December. But to say that this team can only get better is a bit premature, no? We both know, from very recent and recurring history, that this team is very capable of getting worse, mate. Much, much worse.

It'll be interesting, that's for sure.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

What? I said a few times that you're good and I expect you to do well in the playoffs... What's wrong with that?
