Man City (A) 12:30 - EPL - Saturday 25 Nov

A draw and, potentially, dropping to 4th feels like a good result. Especially as city had a goal unfairly chalked off

Don't think it was a foul as well but free kicks are always given for that kind of contact on goalies nowadays. It's just a part of the game.

It would have been unfair if it was given imo

Overslept and missed it. Seems like we were outplayed but we rode our luck to a draw after a silly goal conceded. We contained them and everyone happy with result?

Are we still a little intimidated by city? We always seem so tentative when we play them.

Anyway, big improvement on last season right here no?

Still a bit annoyed at Diaz for not controlling the ball on his chest in closing seconds - but overall you have to say City had more chances, although a lot of them stemmed from our mistakes. It wasn’t a high quality game overall.

We were not outplayed. That is silly. They didn't really have any clear-cut chances (neither did we) - just half chances for both teams. Ali made two good saves but those also weren't good chances where you'd expect them to score.

You expect the home team to have more of the ball, esp. City at home, but we always looked like we could score at any time. A draw was a fair result.

They did have clear-cut chances - like the one Alvarez skied over or Haaland’s flick from the corner at the end. Ours were more half-chances, although just one crisper touch or decision could have been enough for a big chance. We had a good spell in the 2nd half, wouldn’t say we were outplayed overall, but until Trent scored it looked like City were closer to 2:0 then we were to equalizing.

Quick ratings:
Alisson 6 - horrible kicking all game, but his saves kept us in the game
Trent 6.5 - poor defending for their goal; superb finish for his, OK in between.
Matip 7 MOTM - was given too much to do, but didn’t disappoint.
Van Dijk 6 - not very visible as they didn’t attack his side much
Tsimikas 6.5 - solid performance, good for him
MacAllister 6.5 - was given a difficult task, but made no major mistakes and won some important challenges
Szoboszlai 6 - couldn’t leave his mark on the game
Jones 5.5 - took surprising amount of risks, some worked out and others put us in trouble
Jota 6 - diligent defensively, nothing happening at the other end
Nunez 6.5 - his movement attracted chances, but didn’t have anything clear-cut. Bonus points for swearing at Pep in Spanish.
Salah 6.5 - couldn’t get past Ake, but still was our best chance creator by far

Subs:
Diaz 5.5 - barely touched the ball, poor execution on a couple of occasions when he got it
Gravenberch 7 - breath of fresh air in midfield, wasn’t fazed by City players and glided past them easily on occasion. Great pass for Diaz on 98th minute.
Gakpo 6 - a selfless tactical shift
Endo 6.5 - made our midfield harder to get through in closing stages
Elliott 5 - last thing we needed was him losing the ball needlessly in the closing stages.

so on a scale of 0 to 10 you manage to score everyone between 5 and 7 even having to use 1/2s lol. Not having a go at you personally. EVERYONE seems to do it!

We were most defo not “outplayed”. We bossed parts of the game, so did they. They definitely edged it overall but not by much. Two very well drilled teams packed with talent battling it out to a standstill (almost literally for the last 10 mins!)

Nah they were not clear cut at all. Half chances. Haaland's was just a back-header under pressure and Alvarez's was from just inside the box with defenders and the keeper between him and the goal.

We can afford to lose Jota.
Ali is a tough blow though. Kelleher has to step up.

I'd look to sell Jota in summer personally if someone are prepared to pay 50-60m.

Consistently poor performances and can't go a season without being injured for months.

None of who play on the left. It's be a front 3 of Diaz Gakpo and Doak.
Come on man, you know that Gakpo plays on the left. He did it in Holland and he does it for Holland.
Doak is a right footed winger, just like Lucho. I know that he normally plays on the right but I think he can do a job on the left.
Worst case, we've got Szobo.

We haven't played him there since his first few weeks, it's where Klopp plays them. Just like with Mac, plays in a different position for us than he did for Brighton.

In any case his injury means a first team regular will now need to play more in the cups....I feel that'll be mostly on Diaz and with a small squad competing all on fronts, you can't afford injuries.

And Elliott.

Yeah, I don't disagree with you there. There's gonna be some rotation obviously.

For instance against LASK:

Doak-----Gak-----Elliot

Fulham:

Lucho----Nunez-----Salah

It's two home games next week, so no travelling.

But it's not gonna be smooth sailing from there on, far from it. I count 4 games in 10 days.

I think he meant for the RW rotation.
We weren't discussing that though, we know its 95% going to be Salah there anyway like it has the last 7 years......Doak will take up the other 5%.

The only other player that primarily plays on the left for us is Diaz.

Darwin and Gakpo are established number 9's for us now.

Fabinho was an established DM - who did really well as a CB when it was required. Both Gakpo + Darwin have played many games as the left attacker and would easily be able to switch into that position. If either have to play there it won't harm us badly at all (esp. since we have an easy run for the next few matches).

Note that most clubs only have 4 forwards that rotate anyway. We are in the happy position of having five - which is great when one gets injured as we've seen already.

He did do well but at the same time we suffered as a team because we needed his presence in midfield and it wasn't until we brought in Kabak and Nat at the back and moved Fab back into midfield did we go on a brilliant run to take 3rd.

We need players in their best positions. If we don't have a player available in a position then we need to either look to the youth or change system that gets the best out the players we have.

Time will tell who plays on the left until Jota's back. If it isn't gonna be Diaz then I'd like Mo and Darwin up top with Gakpo as the 10.
