Lucas is sound, a team player who always gives his best and the type of mature, experienced leader that every manager needs in his squad.
Trouble is that with him, Henderson & Milner in the side we will lack creativity, balance and tempo.
It's my main concern about our team this season, it's obvious from pre-season that we will lack a metronomic pacemaker in the side who will control the tempo, always be available for the ball, finds space in a packed midfield and adds composure.
We have all sorts of options in midfield now but we don't have the brains to make it tick. The closest we have in the squad is Texeira and Chirivella (maybe Rossiter, though I'm not wholly convinced he has the technical skills) both of whom made huge differences when they played pre-season because they gave us a fulcrum and we then developed a faster more rhythmic pattern. With our current midfield we don't have the short passing game, we become way too predictable because it's too slow, too many players passing the ball in safe areas.
Watch the best sides and they move the ball quickly, one touch in the main. Our lot seem to be coached to receive the ball, control then pass. Every Chelsea player in the back four (especially Terry who is great at it) will pass first time, usually on the volley to a team mate in space.
I don't think Rodgers sees it this way and to me, we will struggle to break sides down again because we can't build the play effectively.
It's so frustrating, we are not far away from a really good side but we are missing a link man and that is not Lucas, at least not with Henderson alongside him.
