Let's face it, this season's a write off

Klopp is a very good manager. But he’s not a miracle worker. For the first time since Benitez we have a manager with a very clear idea of how he wants us to play, and knows how to get us there. Problem is, it takes more time than people would think. In Benitez’s first season in charge we were pretty horrendous in the league. I distinctly remember a game in March 2007 where we beat Arsenal 4-1. There were a murmurings after that came that finally we were seeing the real Benitez team – the equivalent of his so called “crushing machine” of Valencia. Rafa had finally got his spine right. Reina, Carragher, and his ideal double pivot of Masherano and Alonso. We were brutal in that game. Arsenal never had a sniff. But this was nearly 3 years after he first took charge.

So finally we have a manager that we believe in (well I certainly do). But he’s inherited a team 2 months into a season with no pre-season to get any ideas across. On top of that throw an injury crisis with key individuals and a terrible run of difficult games thick and fast. The most alarming thing is how many areas of the squad are major concerns:

Goalkeeper: major concerns over presence and command in area.

Centre backs: Sakho injury prone, and Skrtel is Skrtel.

Left back: Moreno is looking more confident, but can be a liability defensively

Central midfield: Major issues. Lucas and Can are squad players. We lack a dynamic defensive midfielder and we also lack someone who can control a game and dictate the pace. Compare the current situation to a double pivot of Mascherano and Alonso. Or Bender and Gundogan for that matter.

Wingers: A key element of the Klopp system. But we only have one, and he’s young and only just breaking through.

Striker: Sturridge can’t be relied on at all. Ings is out for the season, Origi has looked pretty ordinary. Which leaves Benteke as our only decent option.

So I think the sooner people realise that this really is a write off year, the better. We’ll take the good results when they come, and maybe a cup run. But I’m fully in support of Klopp treating the Europa seriously – the more games the players play, the quicker they’ll develop into the system and the more fluid we’ll become.

It may be two or three years before we’re a proper force to be reckoned with again.

We are in 4 competitions.

How on earth is it a write off ?

12 games in, a squad full of injuries a new manager finding his feet..

Things will look better in the new year, I am confident of that.

No way is this season a write off though...

I'm glad there's no knee jerk reactions after Klopp's first loss in charge anyway...

Absolutely nothing knee jerk in my first post. Not sure how you came to that conclusion. Quite the contrary. My point is that Klopp has a massive task ahead, probably bigger than he even anticipated, with things that can't be fixed in a few months.

blah blah blah knee jerk knee jerk

Even though we've been treading water all season we're by no means out of the top four race - if we prioritise it.

We'll obviously get better over time

It's ridiculous to be thinking run in already but after the next game we'll have played all the following away from home:

Stoke
Arse
Everton
City
Manure
Spurs
Chelsea

There are a few wild cards still there - West Ham, Leicester, Soton, Palace - but who knows what Klopp can get out of the squad after a couple of months and a January window. If it weren't for injuries (and to some extent the Europa League) I'd feel good about a run at top 4 so I think it'll depend on Benteke staying fit and getting Sturridge back from his niggles. Hopefully the latter is just down to him getting fit again after such a long layoff.

Here's normally what'll happen, going by past trends.

Lose the 1st match - it's ok. No manager is perfect. Its bound to happen.
Lose the 2nd - begin to question and criticize players.
Lose the 3rd - write season off. Build and prepare for next year.
Lose the 4th - discuss who to buy for next season.

Next season begins.

Lose 1st match - oh shit. Let's not panic everyone. Keep calm. Let's discuss tactics and tweak the team.
Lose 2nd match - questionable tactics, formation and substitutions.
Lose 3rd match - blame the manager
Lose 4th match - Klopp out threads surface
Lose 5th match - comparison of Klopp vs past managers. Brendan and Rafa back threads surface.
Lose 6th match - sack Klopp !

Ad infinitum.....and oh, add in blame the owners somewhere in there too.

this talk of top 4 makes me sick really ! Target cups like FA or Europa, then get your team playing better football and try to build a squad for winning the league. Top 4 comes automatically when every year you are trying to win trophies !

As a fan it's not a write-off I'm still going to look forward to every game regardless of how far away from perfect we are.

And I can see us winning a cup.

1) as fans we are allowed to dream .. are we not ? Otherwise what's the point, we'd all be like Hmmmm, Halmeister and My Blood Bleeds Red.

2) if you'd have watched much football this season you'd have noticed how competitive it is from top to bottom and how many times 'top teams' are getting turned over or held. City may end up running away with the PL but for the rest it's going to be a close run thing from 2nd to 8th/9th.

3) our team/squad is nowhere near as bad as some are making it out to be. Mishandled under Rodgers perhaps but Klopp's tactics are already having a positive effect regardless of actual results. The results were expected to be all over the place until the team and tactics become stable, however with all of the top teams having already been played away from home, after City in the next match, we can head into the second half of the season with confidence knowing we are going to pick up a lot more points.

4) If our injury situation doesn't improve we will be out of the running .. but that has little to do with the manager/team/club per se unless the training is found to be culpable and I don't think that is the case.

Like I said in the Summer, it will take a while to get back on track, we've had horrendous luck with injuries. I think "a write off" is too early to call, but when you look at our problem areas and our injuries, it'll be a miracle if we don't suffer a few more bad results.

I'm inclined to agree with the thread title. Bedding in season for Klopp. It'd be great if we ended up with more than a 5th or 6th placed finish but I'm not holding my breath.

With less than a third of a season gone it's too early to forecast our seasons points tally or relative position. This sort of negative thinking is just inability to cope with occasional disappointment. Klopp seems a very positive guy so hopefully some of his energy will rub off on fans and they'll support the team to the end rather than fall silent or give up early as these forum topics encourage.

That's completely @rse about front. You don't build a squad by means of knockout competitions. Top four is absolutely possible in a season where almost everyone else is as shaky as we are, and the CL money would be a massive boost.

I think the point in saying this season is a write off, is that we can reasonably not expect too much from this season, not that we should just give up on this season.

It's probably the least important year for us to finish in the top four(not that it isn't important), given that we have only done it once in the past six years, not doing it this year would not be the end of the world. I think with Klopp, his enthusiasm and his reputation, we will be in good shape to have a more sustainable effort at finishing high in the league, like we had under Rafa. Whether we finish fourth or fifth(or higher or lower), won't influence that too much, it just may speed it up or slow it down a little, but taking time is something we're used to at this stage.

Without directly taking issue with that, I'd add two riders. One: it's never too early to get into good habits. Two: not getting at least 4th and a CL place would mean missing out on a lot of money, which in turn would make the job ahead of us even more difficult than it's already going to be.
