Jonjo Shelvey feels as though he has been made a scapegoat for Liverpool's poor showing at Stoke City on Boxing Day.
The 20-year-old midfielder concedes that he was a long way short of his best during a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the Britannia Stadium.
Shelvey had, however, impressed up until that point, making 14 appearances under Brendan Rodgers and earning senior international recognition with England during a World Cup qualifier against San Marino in October.
He has, however, found himself out of favour since Christmas - making just two FA Cup appearances.
Shelvey is prepared to knuckle down and fight his way back into Liverpool's starting XI, but believes he can consider himself unfortunate to have been cast aside so suddenly.
Ahead of an outing for England's U21 side against Sweden on Tuesday, he said in The Independent: "I played against Stoke and obviously I didn't have too great a game.
"I had a few personal issues that were going on in my life. I didn't think I was the only one that had a bad game that day but I was the one that suffered, if you know what I mean.
"You just have to take it on the chin and work hard in training and try to get myself back in the team, which I'm trying to do."

Yup. I'm a big fan of Jonjo but the Stoke performance was the icing on a particularly shit cake. His form had been poor for a while, and he's rightly been benched for the time being.

I think he was scapegoated. He had a poor game and had been indifferent for a few games before that but he needed a break, not a ban. He'd worked himself into the ground for the team before that while more experienced players had strolled around doing little. He'd played upfront, on the wing, behind the forward and in the centre, all without complaint and usually with decent results. Instead of just accepting he was knackered many fans decided he was just shit and dismissed him, and he's been left on the bench or the stands to see Allen struggle, Henderson play himself into form, Downing slowly crank himself into action, Sterling deteriorate and Lucas build up his fitness. He's a good young player who deserves to at least be on the bench and given a chance to prove himself (all over again). He's hardly whining to the press now but, yes, if he feels he's borne the brunt of that Stoke debacle he's probably got a point.

Yeah I agree with all of that. I just feel that he would be better of voicing his legitimate concerns to the manager.

I'll be very surprised (and disappointed) if he doesn't get another opportunity at some point. It'll be up to him to take it.

He's got a very good attitude:

"When Liverpool made an offer, accepting it was the easiest choice I have ever had."

"The lure of playing for Liverpool was a huge thing. Just being able to wear the training kit every day is an honour.”

"If you play me at left-back, right-back or even in goal I'd be happy because it's Liverpool. I'd play anywhere for this club".

He isn't a 'difficult' sort at all.

Didn't Agger and Skrtel get their arse handed to em by Jones and Walters that day.
Shelvey was bad but the two center halves that day were fucking horrendous.

Jonjo did get another chance after the Stoke game, albeit not in the league; he started the Mansfield FA Cup game a few matches later. He's rightly not getting any games now (ditto for Sterling) because the players who have played themselves back into the first team plans (Henderson, Downing) have done a good job thus far. Same would apply to Skrtel with regard to Carra taking his spot. If the guy picked over you is doing a better job, then you just have to bide your time and wait for your chance again, because it'll come. Personally, I'm happy we have that situation in the squad right now.

Now whether Skrtel should come in and take Agger's spot after Agger's part in 3 goals conceded in 4 league games (Man U, Arsenal, City) is for another thread (or two...).

A other youngster who isn't as good the "the hype".

I'm not saying he's bad - but he needs to be better, more effective, and be consistent if he wants to excel at the top level.

He'll hopefully get some minutes against WBA or Swansea.
Thought he was quite positive when he came on against Oldham

With 4 games in 11 days (WBA, Zenit x 2, Swansea), I think he'll get a chance to start a game and probably come on in a couple of others as a sub depending on how things go.

What annoys me the most is we have Shelvey, Henderson, spearing, Lucas, stevie and had Adam and still Brendan thought £15 million of our precious money was needed on Joe Allen

Don't be daft Fox, with the exception of Gerrard Allen will prove himself to be better than probably all of them.

Lucas was injured, henderson was grossly underperforming, spearing was never going to feature (plus he's totally meh), and stevie hadn't recaptured any of his form. Shelvey is only 20, so hes not overly ready for consistent high levels performing. We needed another CM as our midfield was a shambles
