Joe Gomez

Gomez’s current deal still has two years left to run, but Sky Sports News has been told it is a top priority for new sporting director Julian Ward to secure Gomez’s future.

Klopp and his coaching staff consider Gomez to be England’s best centre half, and even though he has struggled for game-time since recovering from a serious knee injury two years ago, he is still very much part of Klopp’s plans’.

It’s a massive confidence boost for our No.12 and a clear indication of the trust that Jurgen Klopp has in his ability to play at the heart of his defence.
The long term plan looks to be a partnership of the 25-year-old and Ibou Konate, with a view of them replacing Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip once both men retire or depart Merseyside.
Now it’s up to the former Charlton Athletic man to get over his injuries and attempt to record a run of games and performances in the side, to reward the trust that appears to have been placed in him.

This suggests that the club is happy with Gomez' longer-term fitness outlook. If so, and if he's OK with staying as things currently stand, it's fine by me. Ability has never been the problem with Gomez IMHO.

I’m not sure about Gomez at all . Time will tell I guess. They do seem to be indicating here (if true) there is faith in him ,and Klopp certainly knows better than me ..so I’m hoping they are right and I’m wrong..

The article’s reasoning is a little weird though.
I could see Virgil easily still going in 5 years, even with a bit of pace lost, and with Konate or Gomez being the partner.
Can’t see a Konate Gomez defence happening anytime soon.

If any of our CBs were to play in the Fabs role it would have to be Matip. Though I suppose he wouldn't be able to resist regularly slaloming upfield and leaving the other midfielders to cover.

Im happy he's staying, I just don't know when he'll get the minutes to keep developing

I really don't mind him staying. Quite surprised to be honest. I mean with the world cup around the corner.
Matip will probably not get an extension and his contract ends in 2024.
Will be interesting to see if Konate, considering that he started the CL final, will continue as second choice.

Great to see this. While there's the general feeling his progress has suffered a bit, he's young and it wasnt that long ago he was part of a sound pairing with VVD. His confidence looked a bit shot last season, that's the sort of thing that's hampering his progress, he has it all if he keeps injury free and gets his head up.

Good - that’s 4 quality CB’s with a couple of youngsters in the pipeline.

It’s looking like the entire backline has been future-proofed for a reasonable length of time.

He's a fighter and that's an honourable thing that deserves appreciation.

If you study his career carefully, he's gone through his fair share of adversities and he's hardly ever complained. Pulled up his socks each time and kept plugging away. Shifted from RB, to LB to CB, rotating between loans, reserves, bench and first team. Not to mention, the unfortunate injuries. Yet, he hardly ever complains.

We need players like him in the squad.

And he can play DM

With Joe Gomez set to stay at Liverpool for another five years, Jurgen Klopp has outlined his belief that there is a lot more to come from his long-serving No. 12.
Gomez has already been a Liverpool player for seven years, having arrived from Charlton in a £3.5 million deal in 2015, but he is now committed until 2027.

The centre-back became the third to sign a new contract this summer when he put pen to paper on a five-year extension on Thursday, following deals for Mohamed Salah and James Milner.
Klopp also put pen to paper earlier this year, committing to the club until 2026, while Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay have all agreed long-term stays.

While Gomez spent last term as fourth-choice centre-back, there is a sense that he can renew his challenge for a starting spot, with Klopp telling the club’s official website his “best years are still to come.”
“Joe is an outstanding talent. He is also an outstanding defender and an outstanding human being,” the manager said.
He has so many qualities, I could talk about them all day.
“So knowing that he will continue his journey with us is a massive boost – one that everyone who loves Liverpool FC and cares about its present and future should be unbelievably happy about.
“One of the many wonderful things about Joe is he has experience and youth – that’s not a bad combination.
“He has not long turned 25 but he was at the club before I was and I think after Hendo and Millie he is our longest-serving player. Incredible.
“But the best thing of all is that his best years are still to come and I could not be happier that this will happen with us.”

We had a few weeks off and when I returned to AXA I saw him and my first thought was ‘wow!’.
“Physically, he is in such a good place and now all he needs is a good pre-season and the rhythm that comes from this.
“Everything else is in place and I could not be happier that he will be staying with us for even longer.”

This time last year brought a milestone for Gomez as he returned from a long-term knee injury to feature alongside Virgil van Dijk during a pre-season friendly.
Fast-forward 12 months, the 25-year-old was part of the first group back at the AXA Training Centre and has already joined in with gym work, small-sided games and running drills.
He is in line to start against Man United in the opening pre-season friendly on Tuesday, and Klopp is impressed with his conditioning since returning.
“In terms of right now, Joe is in phenomenal shape,” he added.

We need Joe Gomez for the homegrown quota. High quality English players come at a premium so would be mad to let him go (particularly now that we're not so reliant on his fitness).

I'm more surprised that he's happy to stay given how the last couple seasons have gone.

His problem has partly been down to those big injuries. Very glad we can keep him, but the way Matip and Konate looked last season, I'm really not sure where and when he plays. Cover for Trent seems his only option, and that's going to be crumbs from the table.

We are a Pickford tackle on VVD away from needing serious Gomez to play every other game. Happy to keep him especially if Phillips is signing for Bournemouth

The chat seems to be that we're planning on loaning Nat again rather than selling him.

He’s decent. And would have been brilliant if it weren’t for injuries. Which is my only concern.

Pretty much what almost everyone said. Excellent player, hampered by injuries, English quota.

More champions league games due to the never ending greed of Uefa, and the threat of another injury criss means we need 4 Centre backs. Being able to rest TAA is also important.

But on the down side, it will mean another 5 years of having to listen to Donavan talk complete bollocks about him every 2nd post

Number switch from 12 to 2.

Opta facts/quiz

Our 3 longest serving players who haven't scored a goal for us have/will have all worn number 2.

Gomez will be one of them, name the other two?
