The Gomez situation

I like Guehi but I don't think we're interested in him.
The window shuts slams shut on August 31st so we:re entering "put up or shut up" territory right now.

We won't start the new season decimated. I predict that a few players will have to stick around until January because its going to be extremely difficult to get a replacement now.

Fixed

Surprised we've not pulled a kyrgiakos and just gone for some veteran as a back up

How much do you think we need to pay for a 24yo Englishman who can come into our first team straight away though? Our back-up CB costs 45m.

Maximum would be around £45 m plus incentives. Guehi is good but he's not world class. This market is fucked. No one is saying "no".
Honestly, I'd rather go and get a German for £20 mill.

That's unrealistic since Palace has already rejected a 65m bid. Besides Guehi I am not sure there are many CBs that we can get in the premier league who is in their prime and could step into our first team immediately. Guehi just turned 24, he will sort out our CB issue for years.

SVDB, Gomez, Diaz, Fabio out for 140-150m~,
Guehi, Gordon in for 160m~

will be great business imo.

I don't know, they're both very good players, but at least 50 of those £160 m is due to them being English.
Honestly, I don't think it's worth buying English players in this market unless they have a release clause or a year left on their contract.
I mean, don't you think it's bizarre that Brentford were asking for almost £100 mill for 28 year old Toney last season?
At some point clubs just needs to start saying no.
Man U just did that regarding Branthwaite, Newcastle with Guehi etc.
Now look at Brentford who suddenly just want £50 mill for Toney.

The question that needs to be asked is, are we desperate for Gordon and Guehi?
Imo the answer is no. I don't think they'll do that much to improve us to be honest, they'll just be options.

When it comes to English players, we should focus on producing our own or buy 17-18 year olds like we did with Gomez.
Or....and here's another controversial idea, look in the lower divisions for young English talent like Gomez again or Bellingham.

It just feels like we could be losing alot of English players. Gomez going, Jones / Harvey apparently on the peripheral, Trent with his contract issue...

It is not the worst idea in the world to bring some in TBH. And not for the sake of doing, I do think Gordon and Guehi will strengthen us immediately.

the only difference in this case is that we are getting rid of a potential first teamer in most games, so we need a starter at least. Can't see us getting Gordon - just don't make any sense right now.

We obviously need to have an English presence in the squad. Trent can still sign a new contract, he probably just wants to see how the season pans out.
Jones should be in the peripheral and Elliott just needs to keep improving.
We've got Morton, Quansah, Nyoni a few Irish and UK players so I think we're good.

Why are we assuming there will be no injuries this season?

No issues with selling if we have a concrete plan for improving the first team. Our inability to land a signing is what worries me. Why keep on selling when we are unable to land our targets?
It wouldn't surprise me if Slot has decided he prefers to have specialists over a 'Jack of all trades '. I like Gomez, he's done great, but we have a large squad and if we want specialists then those that aren't in the preferred top 2 for a position are superfluous.

I'm also not assuming that our buying is done - I think we'll see 2 in before the transfer windows slams shut! I can see Gomez, Tsimi, Endo, Kelleher, Morton and Jones on the chopping block. Williams and Phillips too if they are still here.

We have a large squad that needs trimming for new blood, we can't keep them all.

A lot to consider in that post.

Firstly we can't just buy in overseas players. Fact is we will need to buy home grown and probably English. Banking on youngsters coming through is unrealistic, most fail and we can't afford to wait 4-5 years for them to improve, mature .... and likely be unsuitable. The reason top teams stay at the top is because they buy in quality to take over, or compete for, a starting spot.

As for buying Gordon and Guehi (or Branthwaite) well any improvement could end up be the deciding factor by the end of the season and they are step ups. We aren't going to be buying world class stars so young high quality players entering their prime is the way to go and what we've done over the past decade.

I don't think so. We shouldn't be keeping them just because they are English / Home -grown. Jones & Morton likely will be gone this Summer or next.

Where do you want to start?

Is Guehi the best CB we can sign? At £85m, and therefore one of the most expensive CB’s ever.. he’d want to be one of the best in the world.

Why does he have to be English? We have overseas spots available.

Is he significantly better than what we have for the price? Is he better than a fit Konate or offer more for the future than Quansah?

Is he even the right profile of CB we want?

If he’s replacing Gomez - can he play at either FB position?

I could go on all night about why spending £85m on Guehi is a bad idea - he’s barely worth more than Gomez.

That's my point the whole market for English players is fucked.
If we for some reason enquire about some random player, let say Ryan Yates from Forest.
I wouldn't be surprised if they ask for £70 mill.

Why would anyone pay £85 million for Guehi?

Chelsea would probably pay double that. Even if he was on loan from Chelsea, Chelsea would still pay it.

Todd - "Well why didn't you tell me earlier?, Ah it doesn't matter now"

If we can get Bastoni for £20m more then we net for Gomez then all is forgiven.

We always needed quality over quantity this window. The hitch is what quality LCB wants to come and wait for VVD to leave or retire. You would just want until that spot opens.

Only because you think Morten is a good Scando name and there's an outside chance he's not 100% English
Wtf, lurkers joining the fun too?

Edit...this is definitely not a lurker. This is someone trying to be incognito.
Dantes? Themn? SpiderNeil?

First of all, there are reports of us wanting Guehi and the ballpark price to get him is looking like 75-85-ish, not 20, 30 or 40m. That is realistically the price we will pay if we want him. I am not going to argue with you on whether he is the right player or not. I think he is a good player, premiership proven and is better than Q and Konate so he improves us immediately if the club thinks he is the right fit.

And why does the player replacing Gomez have to be a utility player? We have Bradley and Tsimi.

If Gomez is going, with Trent, Curtis, Harvey, Morton unsure of their future. The english quota is coming down fast.

If you see Guehi at 85m alone of course it is an alarming amount. Gomez at 45m is equally overpriced. But at a 30-40m spread to get a first team CB who is 24 is not that bad a deal. Virgil needs replacing next season anyway. We are definitely paying at least 30-40m to get a CB next season so why not now?

Bastoni Locatelli and Chiesa please.

Even take Rabiot right about now, that's how desperate we are.
