...can we do better than Johnson?

It took me a while but I'm starting to see why Mark and some other posters are giving him a tough time.

For all his attacking prowess, which is a bit OTT imo, he can sometimes be a liability in defence.

His crossing is shit to be honest and his passing as well.

Of course there's positives, like his pace or that he takes on defenders and helps the team in attack etc.

Still, can we afford to let him go? Can we find someone cheaper who's just as good as he is?

For every cracking game Johnson has, he has 2 or 3 shit ones to balance it out. It's so frustrating to see, because you just know he can be fantastic when he puts his heart into it. I really like the guy, and he seems to have the right attitude, but is that enough to hang on to him? I don't know anymore.

On MOTD2 tonight, Michael Owen actually threatened to start an interesting discussion about contemporary wing backs, then Colin Murray shut him up.

Why limit ourselves to the premiership?

Anyway, Rafael, Zabaleta and maybe Walker.
Rafael's a manc, Walker is dodgy too (take our game v Spurs as a typical example of one of his mistakes) but Zabaleta I'd take in a heartbeat.

He was actually doing a piece on how most right and left backs don't seem to know quite what they're supposed to be doing these days, and used the two manc defenders as an example, and it promised to get quite interesting when he was promptly shut up!

Murray's a useless cunt on MotD2. I've nothing against the guy, but at the end of the day, he's just a washed up DJ from BBC Radio 1, that fancied Edith Bowman.

Of all our problems and must-address areas, right back is quite a way down that list.

Obviously we need a top class centre defender and a winger.

We need top class central defenders, and we need more creative players in attack. I couldn't give a fuck about defined position players like wingers.

The problem with Johnson, I believe, is his attitude at the moment.

He can still be good but it just seems as though complacency has settled in and he is happy to play within himself. He perhaps needs to be brought down a peg or two and get hungry to prove himself.

Maybe the fact that he can't seem to motivate himself is issue enough to look for an alternative though? A wider discussion that applies to more than just Johnson however.

When he was injured or off form or had to play on the left, we had Kelly coming in and doing a fine job on the right. Maybe that put a bit of pressure on him.
Now we have, what, Wisdom and Flannagan? Johnson will feel fuck all pressure to outperform his protege. As you say though, that shouldn't matter at all for someone on 80/90k per week, but nevertheless, we need someone there challenging his position.

I think he's tired. He's played practically every game this season, is 28 and needs a break.

I'm hoping this is the case. The poor cunt has been run off his feet this season, and it's really only in the last 4 or 5 games he's started to make errors.

I'm assuming it's because Murray's a reds fan, and he didn't want Johnson's name being rubbed in the mud?
Probably just didn't want to have to listen Owen talking for longer than he had to.

Johnson is world class. The poor fella is just knackered, he's played constantly & covers a helluva distance every match.

He's one of the most overrated players in the team. He's fashionable, he's just not very good if you want to have a successful team.

Much like Lucas, it's not a coincidence we've been rubbish for the entire time we've had him in our team.

Would like to see some more of Wisdom in the last few games.
Yeah I agree with you. Johnson for me has had a poor season. There is only a few games left. I say give Wisdom a game and rest GlenJo - Can't hurt.

Wisom is not a right back. If anyone is supposed to be given a chance there it should be McLaughlin.

Also I would like to see Kelly at CB.

Does that mean they're boss if we have one good season with them in the team?
