I played injured Liverpool star Sturridge in Germany game to test him, admits Hodgson

[article]Roy Hodgson has admitted he pushed injured Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge to face Germany last month to ‘test his resolve’.
Sturridge, who will be out for eight weeks after damaging ligaments in his left ankle while training last Friday, was already struggling with a thigh injury during last month’s international get-together.
But in a surprise admission, Hodgson admitted he pressured Sturridge to play in the 1-0 loss to Germany at Wembley on November 19 after he had missed the friendly with Chile the previous Friday through injury.

The England manager said: ‘Dan has pulled out of a few matches with us for injury reasons. The first game he played for me against the Republic of Ireland he got injured. It was important for me to, if you like, test his resolve a little bit.
‘I might have been guilty of putting that resolve to the test but I don’t apologise for it.
‘And I am delighted he did get out there, even though he maybe didn’t feel 100 per cent, because that means in future I will know I can trust him as an England player. He is not going to be playing when he feels like it, he is going to be playing when he’s fit to play.’
Reacting to the news that Sturridge will be out for up to two months, Hodgson added: ‘I’d rather the players got injured now. We only played him because medical opinion told us. He had scans and there was nothing on them. I believe the injury that kept him out this last weekend was nothing to do with the initial injury he was complaining about after playing for Liverpool.
‘We wanted him out there and I think he wanted to play as well so it was important.
‘Daniel has burst on to the scene. We think he will be an interesting player but I don’t have that many months to sort that out.’
Before the clash with Germany, Sturridge had admitted that his thigh injury had been troubling him since the start of the season.
He returned to Liverpool after the Germany game but was named substitute against Everton for the Merseyside derby the following Saturday.
At the time, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said: ‘I was not overly surprised he played 90 minutes.

‘But it’s not ideal if you haven’t trained. When you see Daniel — and I have worked with him for a number of months — I know when he’s at his best. That’s when he has been training regularly and playing games.
‘Sometimes managers are led by players. Sometimes they want to play 90 minutes and that is something we will consider.’

Hodgson, hes the master of the soundbite. He always manages to say something that at first seems slightly odd but then the more you think about it the less sense it makes and you realise he hasnt got a fucking clue and hes making it up as he goes along. He really is absolutely clueless

What an absolute cunt of a man to come out with comments like that.

If I didn't know better I'd say he holds a grudge against LFC for sacking him.

Looking at that picture of the two of them. Are they yew trees in the background I wonder

He has a point, it's a well known fact that if players get injured early in the season, they definitely won't get injured again. Best to get it out of the way early.

The hacks are right. He's such a literate man.

So what can we do here? Fuck all? Budgie says that he's going to call up injured players, and play them, and the silly cunts will go (and be half arsed and play crap).
If we say to the players 'you're not going' - all hell breaks loose. If we concoct a medical reason why they can't go - they'll still go.

The only way out of this is to be a position like what ginsoak used to be in, where the players respect and fear you, and will pull out of poxy internationals for you. We're not in that position.

Sturridge is cunt for going and playing injured, and Hodgson is just a cunt.

The twat sulked when he was blocked from getting in the director's box earlier this season. Next time Ged Pointon should be instructed to frogmarch him out the ground.

I think Sturridge's attitude since he's signed has generally been really good, but I get the nagging feeling it wouldn't take that long for him to start feeling he's better than the club. Especially if he manages to establish himself at international level and starts scoring regularly then. He's got that level of confidence whereby everything good that happens to him he sort of expects to have happened.

If you were in with a chance to go the World Cup you'd turn up for your country's friendlies and try and win a place. And you'd be more inclined to do so if a. you were a fringe player but on the rise and b. if you knew your club position was almost guaranteed when you are fit, therefore you can task the risk of pissing them off by going to play in the friendly when struggling with an injury.

I'd do what Sturridge did every single time.

Yeah, players can be bullied by England managers, clubs can't, at least not the big ones. The mancs know how to deal with this kind of crap. We need to learn quickly.

I think that may change now with their new manager.

Then you have little or no fucking sense. What benefit will you achieve for yourself by playing when you are injured? How did he play against Germany. Had he a brilliant game that cemented his place for the World Cup? Or did he not do himself justice because he was nursing an injury?

What benefit will you achieve for yourself if you are then unable to play for your club?

Stupid stupid decision by Sturridge and Hodgson

That's a bit weird. You seem to have missed the point where Hodgson said the medical evidence suggested Sturridge could play and Hodgson wanted to test his resolve. And Sturridge was keen to play. So he played. Loads of players play when a bit injured, giving it a try to see how it goes. And now Hodgson has said "‘And I am delighted he did get out there, even though he maybe didn’t feel 100 per cent, because that means in future I will know I can trust him as an England player". It appears to have worked out well for Sturridge at an England level, which is what he was aiming for, so that answers all your questions about what was achieved.

As for being unable to play for your club afterwards, I already said that's worth the risk if a player is a guaranteed starter at his club when fit, which Sturridge is. He knows he can take that risk and it'll probably turn out ok in the end. All the top players are able to do this. Anyway, playing for England did no harm to Sturridge on a club level as his current injury is nothing at all to do with his slight thigh problem. Maybe you didn't know that.

He couldn't play a full game in the derby because of him being a tit and playing for England, a game we dropped points in. Maybe that chance that fell to the berk Allen might have fallen to him and we'd have ended up with a different result 🙁

That's not in question. We are talking about Sturridge trying to get himself a place on the plane to Brazil and I said I'd do what he did and try out for England, irrespective of the fallout.

If we fuck up over the next 2 months, this may kill his career here ... and then Brazil 2014 won't mean a thing in the long run as we're the only club who's ever given him a proper chance to show his talents ...

I think Sturridge was pressured by his earlier comments aswell. That Liverpool was more important than England. If the truth came out I'd bet Hodgepodge threathned to not include him in the Brazil squad if he didnt play vs Germany. Dont think there is anything wrong with Studges attitude but he could make some better choices/decisions at times.

England are fucked for goal scorers, so if he's fit, there's no way he's not going, it's not like Budgie is flush for options. He's full of shit. He's a tit and so is Sturridge.

Sturridge will want a part in a World Cup and Hodgson will want his best players on board.

We're disappointed that the club isn't the only thing on Sturridge's mind and his injury will reduce the clubs chances in the League but it's not an opportunity any player is going to pass up.

I'm surprised that anyone's surprised. Hodgson has a thick skin and Sturridge wants to appear in a World Cup in Brazil, what are you going to do?

I think Sturridge would be well advised to read this gem from the great Bard:

51krrCcG3iL._SX342_.jpg

The letter came from Dave Bowen of Wales:
'I want you to play in the Home Internationals'.
Proud as Punch, I went after lunch,
To see Mr Shankly, to thank him a bunch.
'Thanks, boss, I said, for letting me go!'
'I had no idea,' he growled, 'I haven't been told!'
Fearing the worst, I asked him what's what,
'You're going nowhere, lad, to Wales you're not!'
I wanted to argue, but I knew all hope was lost.
You don't challenge Mr Shankly, we all know he's boss.
'Go to bed, son,' he barked,
So upstairs I marched,
With a bottle of Lucozade in case I got parched.
Wales were cheered on from Bangor to Llanelli
But I had to make do with watching them on the telly.
