Hendo'n his way out

I don't want him to leave. He is the glue who has helped hold it all together for years now, of far greater value than just what he gives us on the pitch (although I do think we look more dynamic when he plays, particularly from off the bench).
I'd compare it to Coutinho leaving, but for slightly different reasons. Clearly the money isn't as significant (although it would free up a chunky gap in the wage bill) but it's then all about what we do to fill the personality/leadership gap - does someone else in the squad step up as the new leader and fulfil a potential that is currently being blocked?
When Coutinho left it felt like another backward step - we were selling our best player to a team most of us despised and who we should have been striving to compete with. But then in came van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, a new spine, each of them with a claim to be amongst the world's best at what they did, and a few years later we played the game of our lives and broke Barcelona, the team that had poached our best player, who had then turned to shit, at least in their colours. Divock and Gini broke them on the pitch. Coutinho broke them on their balance sheet. They've still not recovered.
So this feels like a similar crossroads, and thankfully we still have Klopp at the helm to navigate through it and, who knows, maybe emerge stronger from it.
I'm nervous, but hopeful.
But I'm also still not convinced it'll happen.

Surely Stevie G needs to get a bit of fan anger for this? Unsettling the captain at the start of preseason to play in a farcical league isn’t a great look

that’s one possible outcome but unless he’s planning on shifting his entire extended family, kids friends and schools too a move like that definitely comes with issues
Yeah but most expats deal with those issues and, in my considerable experience in this area, nearly all deal with it and love the lifestyle. Plus he and his family with be well taken care of.

I see a lot of people celebrating, but he's crucial off the pitch still.

He's come back from preseason in outstanding condition. I'd like him stay for one more year, because I think City might have a wobble and we need experience at the beginning of the season to take advantage.

Szobo hasn't shown anything yet in LFC shirt to say he's going to settle in quickly and be strong enough to play in a central role in the PL now.

I'd be very surprised if he left. VVD hasn't shown he's a great captain either.

Let's be clear here - it's not the 'fans' life. It always perplexes me when I see fans up in arms regarding something which clearly has little to no effect on their lives but is everything for the object of their ire. It's extremely hypocritical.

I'd still take him over the Hendo from last season. Maybe though he was also affected by the loss of the title and CL the season before. But at 33 I wouldn't bank on him coming back this.

VvD, Ali or Mo for captain.

Maybe just give it to Trent.

I’m asking whether Gerrard should be getting a hard time for his part in the move as a former badge kissing Liverpool legend. Henderson can do whatever he wants that’s his choice.

Ali is too quiet and GKs rarely make good captains.

VVD seems too jokey from what I've seen behind the scenes. I can't see him setting great standards off the pitch.

Mo sets incredible standards off the pitch, but he's our star player and when things don't go his way on the pitch, I see him whinging like Cristiano does, as opposed to motivating. But he's probably our best option right now.

I can't recall who, but someone on here said that Hendo gives +10 to everyone else when he is on the pitch. He'll be sorely missed if he chooses to go.

I'm ambivalent. I've always felt it's in the clubs interest if one of Henderson, Thaigo or Fabinho is replaced this window. There's a case to be made for each, and everyone will have their views, but ultimately we need fresh legs in the defensive area of the pitch.

As for the leadership, there's denying Henderson would be missed. It's also needs noting that the squad is packed full of International captains and also has Trent waiting in the wings. I'd be confident of others stepping up and doing a fine job.

Gutted.

Can understand him having his head turned at that sort of wedge. Big job replacing him and we should demand a decent fee to reflect that.

Do you lads seriously want him gone? Who’s going to hold the standards amongst the players? Virgil and Robbo perhaps but with Milner gone I don’t think anyone left has the voice, the bite and the respect.

Might be fine without but the results with him are difficult to fault.
It’s not about ‘wanting’ him gone but about what we need, we’ve been calling for a ruthless squad overhaul since Jan and now we’re getting that people are … bemused? Ali Trent Virg Salah are all capable to be the voices of the club. Szobo is also the captain of his country. There’s still more than enough experience in the squad to see us through adversity. Timing is everything and this is the right time for him as it was those other guys that left. People reading way too much in the whole losing the experienced leader head figures.

That gut wrench feeling won’t last long. Fans will soon come to their senses and see this proved to be the right move.

Ok well i think you’re reading too little into losing experienced leaders. You’ve listed a load of good guys but I’ve rarely seen the hard side from any of them. Also all stories point towards there being quite a small transfer fee involved which isn’t much help with this overhaul.

If it’s big money fine but he has value beyond the pitch that needs to be paid for.

100%

If we're talking experience, we have loads of it.
Ali, Trent, Virg, Matip, Robbo, Fabs, Salah even Thiago who probably has lifted twice as many trophies as Hendo.
I get that we're losing our captain but this isn't exactly peak Hendo. Why wait until the decline is more noticeable?

I'm good with this decision just like I was good with Mane leaving.
I almost feel the same about Salah. Get something while we still can. Although the urgency isn't quite the same and we have no replacement.

Their hard side? We’re not in the 80s anymore, games evolved. It’s no longer about striking fear and intimidating or mouthing off barking and swearing….it’s about playing teams off the park, remaining in peak physical condition and staying professional. We don’t need a Hendo or Milner in the side or in the squad even to scrape through a 1-0, we can adapt to that style as and when. Hendo’s hard side didnt really help us much last season, did it? Or the 20/21 season…you need your key players available at all times. Having Hendo around was only gonna hold us back.

How do you think the professionalism persists, it needs guys around who are willing to call out slipping standards and set examples. Or we could just let Mo be captain and everyone will be smiley when we’re losing.

How’s he going to hold the club back as part of a well rotated midfield with depth?

I don't think he should be starting too many games, if he stays, just cups and 15 minutes at the end of games to keep things professional.

The course of direction at this club changed the minute Klopp walked through them doors. You felt it straight away. Don’t forget the likes
of Milner Hendo and even Stevie and Carra were here well before Klopp came….were was our hard side then?
We don’t worry about we lose in players, we work with what we have and we have quality, experience and winning mentalists in abundance.

How do City do so well when they keep selling their senior players? There's experience, but there's also accountability, which means moving players on who aren't contributing on the pitch
